A pregnant Bengal cat giving birth will display several distinct behaviors and signs. As labor begins, she may become restless, frequently change positions, and seek out a quiet, secluded place. She might start nesting, arranging blankets or soft materials into a comfortable spot.
During the initial stage of labor, the cat will often purr or meow softly, and you may notice rhythmic contractions in her abdomen. This stage can last several hours as she prepares for delivery. When active labor begins, she will lie on her side and start to push. Each kitten is delivered encased in a thin membrane, which the mother will instinctively lick away to stimulate breathing. She will also bite through the umbilical cord and consume the placenta for nutritional benefits.
Kittens are typically born 10 to 60 minutes apart, although this can vary. Between births, the mother will clean and nurse her newborns, encouraging them to suckle. It is important to provide a calm environment, monitor the process from a distance, and be prepared to intervene if complications arise, but generally, let the mother handle the birthing process.
