During this rainy season, one of the diseases pet owners should watch out is LEPTOSPIROSIS.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with the many strains of Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found in contaminated soil and water and can infect mammals including dogs and humans.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors.

It is important to know that the signs of leptospirosis in dogs can vary depending on the strain of the infecting bacteria. Some of the most common signs would be Loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin and mucous membrane), and drinking or urinating more than usual among others. The disease can progress into kidney and/or liver failure.

Because Leptospirosis can look like other diseases, you need the help of your trusted veterinarian to properly diagnose and treat patients which such signs. The disease is generally treated with antibiotics and supportive care (IV fluids and nutritional support). When the disease is treated early, the chance of recovery increases.

Fortunately, vaccines are available to protect dogs from this disease. The 5-in-1 core vaccine is recommended as it provides protection against Leptospirosis. The 8-in-1 vaccine further increases protection of against different strains of Leptospirosis.

Be sure to have your pets vaccinated regularly to provide protection for unwanted infectious diseases. This doesn’t just protect our furry friends but also us - the owners.
