Tip 14
It is very necessary for a fancier to keep close watch on youngsters from the time they are hatched. The first thing to notice is whether the nestlings are strong. If one of them does not sit upright in the nest with head held up properly after several days from hatching it is showing signs of weakness. Weak youngsters never make good racers. Youngsters which keep up a constant squeaking in the nest are also defective. Study the droppings of youngsters round the nestbowl. If they are watery and other than firm and dark in colour suspect that all is not well with them and if the droppings are always loose, watery and infirm you may write off the youngsters. Observation is the essence of pigeon keeping. Look for deformity and abnormality in youngsters - even the best breeders sometimes produce a freak or defective offspring. Watch the feather growth on a nestling. Any hitch in the development of the feathering indicates a set-back which cannot be other than serious.
