WHAT IS A "TEACUP" CHIHUAHUA?

You've probably heard of some Chihuahuas being coined the term "Teacup". While many people may think they know what Teacup Chihuahuas are, the truth is they probably don't. However, after reading this article you should have a better understanding of them.

WHAT DOES "TEACUP" ACTUALLY MEAN?

It's a common misconception that when someone refers to a Chihuahua as a "Teacup", they're referring to a specific breed. This isn't the case, though; In fact, the only official Chihuahua breeds recognized by any major canine association are the smooth or short-coat and long-coat Chihuahua. As you might have guessed by the name, short-coat Chihuahuas have a shorter coat of hair than their counterpart the long-coat.

So, you're probably asking yourself why so many people call Chihuahuas Teacup, Toy, or Miniature. Well, people call them terms like that for different reasons. Some people just call their Chihuahua a Teacup Chihuahua because they're small or tiny. However, breeders use these terms to try and add value to their Chihuahuas. By giving a Chihuahua a special name such as Teacup, they can possibly sell them for more to unsuspecting buyers. If you see a breeder advertising an official "Teacup" Chihuahua for sale, you should avoid them at all cost, as there's no such thing as an official Teacup Chihuahua.

Unfortunately, many sellers breed their Chihuahuas to become smaller and smaller just so they can slap a "Teacup" label on them. Remember, there are no official Teacup Chihuahuas; it's just a word many people use when referring to a small Chihuahua.
