2 weeks post C-Section delivery and these pups are steadily gaining weight. 👏

Under your veterinarian's guidance, the puppies should receive their first deworming treatment at about two weeks of age. 💊

Weighing them daily during week two should also be continued to ensure everyone is properly gaining weight.

Puppies generally start to open their eyes at about this time. If they don't, you probably should have a veterinarian take a look and possibly help assist the puppies by manually opening their eyes. At all times, be on the lookout for any kind of eye discharge or other signs of infection. 🦠

The care of newborn puppies is a lot of work, but there is a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment in the process as well. 💯

Sharing some snaps of some of the recent cases of emergency C-Section performed at the clinic.

A Caesarean section, or C-section, is a major surgery most commonly performed as an emergency procedure when there is difficulty with natural birth.

Here are some signs to look out for that can indicate that your dog is experiencing difficulties in delivering her puppies and requires emergency veterinary care.
✔️Your dog is actively pushing for 30-60 minutes without producing a puppy.
✔️Signs of illness including vomiting, fever, pain and bloody discharge.
✔️Weak contractions for 2 hours or more without producing a puppy.

Rest time between each birth varies from one dog to another but it can last as long as 4 hours. If you know there are more puppies but it has been over 4 hours since the last puppy was born, and if your dog is in labor and displays any of the symptoms above, contact your vet for urgent care. Your pet might need an emergency C-section.

Roxanne, a 3-year old Chihuahua successfully delivered 2 cutie pups via emergency C-section. 🐶

Pregnancy in Chihuahuas can be risky and sometimes dangerous for both the mother and the puppies. This is mainly because Chihuahuas are very tiny and have narrow hips and the puppies have large heads which makes whelping difficult for the mother.

The risk becomes even higher if a Chihuahua gets pregnant by mating with a larger dog or unknown breed, this was the case for Roxanne. She was also experiencing dystocia, had signs of anorexia, and was whelping for 4 hours. Hence, emergency Cesarean section was performed to minimize the risks for both mother and its puppies.

If you have a pet Chihuahua that’s pregnant or planning to have it bred, it is best to seek advise from a veterinarian and plan the pregnancy so as to minimize the risk of complications.

RINGWORMS IN DOGS 🦠🦠

Here are some photos of a puppy with ringworms showing the bright apple green fluorescence of the infected hairs, as examined under a Wood’s lamp. 🔍

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can affect the skin, hair, or nails. The medical term for this is called Dermatophytosis.

Although your dog having ringworm doesn't seem too harmful initially, it can lead to bigger problems if left untreated, and infection can spread from pets to humans (esp young children).

If you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s vital that you contact a veterinarian before symptoms worsen:
✔️Dry, 'crispy' hair
✔️Inflamed, red skin rash
✔️Circular or patchy areas of hair loss
✔️Scales that look like dandruff
✔️Scabs or lesions on the skin
✔️Darkened skin
✔️Reddened skin
✔️Inflamed folds of the skin around the nails
✔️Itchiness

Treatment goals for ringworm will be to eliminate the fungi from the dog’s skin, restore hair and skin to a normal condition and prevent the spread of infection to other family members.

BEWARE OF RABIES ⚠️

A 10 month old male Siberian Husky who was in a fight with a potentially rabid dog two weeks prior, was recently brought to the clinic. Upon assessment, the patient displayed signs of aggression, excessive salivation, weakness, had episodes of seizures, difficulty of breathing, and re**al temp was about 41.7 C. 2 hours after, the patient was succumbed to death due to paralysis and respiratory failure.

Necessary precautions were performed upon examination and after care of the suspected rabid dog so as to prevent the spread of infection. The head was submitted to Municipal Veterinary Office of Manolo Fortich (and forwarded to Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory) for definitive diagnosis which they then confirmed positive for Rabies infection 5 days after.

If your dog is bitten or scratched by another animal, they must see a vet immediately. Do not wait for signs or symptoms to present themselves as it will be too late to save your dog. Once symptoms appear, there’s no way to treat rabies in dogs. If your veterinarian suspects rabies, your dog may be euthanized since they could spread the virus.

PREVENTION IS KEY when it comes to Rabies. 💯💉

Always make sure to keep your pet’s vaccinations up-to-date to protect you and your pets against this fatal disease. Also, if you think you have been exposed to rabies, seek medical care from a health care provider IMMEDIATELY. 🏥🦠

Prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for stopping the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease.

To combat dental disease dogs should receive their first dental cleaning by the age of two and cats by age one. From there, it is best to have your pet's teeth cleaned at least once per year. Some breeds of cats and dogs may need more frequent cleanings, especially if they have shallow roots or teeth crowding. 🦷

Canine Parvovirus cases are on the rise 🦠🐾

Vaccination is the best way to prevent your furry friends from contracting this deadly disease. 💉

A dog needs about three parvo vaccinations to be completely immune to the virus. One shot is not enough, they need to receive booster shots so they can have stronger immune system to fight against this fatal disease. 💯
