The award was presented during the Asia Pacific Biosafety Association (APBA) 17th Annual Biorisk Conference and the Biorisk Association of the Philippines (BRAP, Inc.) 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Quezon City.

Dr. Sajol received the award from Mr. Ronaldo E. Puno, President of BRAP, and it was officially handed by Dr. Miguel Martin N. Moreno II, Chair of the Board of Directors of IFBA, along with Ms. Maureen Ellis, Executive Director of IFBA.

Congratulations to Dr. Philip John S. Sajol!

We are proud to announce that Dr. Philip John S. Sajol, a faculty member of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, has successfully graduated as a fellow during the recently concluded Health Security Partners (HSP) Futures Fellowship Capstone Meeting on September 3, 2024, at Holiday Inn Galleria, Quezon City.

The Health Security Futures Fellowship is a prestigious program that nurtures early-career scientists from around the world, equipping them to become leaders in health security. This year’s fellowship saw participation from 10 fellows from each of the participating countries; Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Over the course of the year, fellows work closely with global mentors, engage in hands-on learning, and develop projects addressing local health security challenges.

The fellowship started with an intensive weeklong Training Institute, where fellows attended special lectures, workshops, and simulations led by HSP experts. Dr. Sajol, along with his peers, was mentored to identify and develop a project proposal focused on a local health security issue, which was presented to the HSP team. Following the Training Institute, fellows continued a yearlong virtual curriculum consisting of monthly expert-led modules, hands-on activities, and continuous mentoring for project implementation.

In recognition of his efforts, Dr. Sajol will also attend the upcoming Asia Pacific Biosafety Association (APBA) 17th Annual Biorisk Conference and the Biorisk Association of the Philippines (BRAP, Inc.) 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum. As part of this opportunity, he has been funded by HSP to take the Biorisk Management Certifying Examination of the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA).

This fellowship, funded by the US Biosecurity Engagement Program and implemented by HSP, is an incredible milestone in Dr. Sajol’s career and a significant step toward strengthening health security in the region.

Kudos to Dr. Sajol for this remarkable achievement and his dedication to advancing global health security!

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Jose M. Obedencio Jr. was one of only 9 Filipinos selected to participate in the prestigious “IATA Train the Shipping Trainer Workshop" organized by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in behalf of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency of the US Department of Defense. The training took place from August 29 to September 2, 2024, at the Marriott Hotel Manila.

This exceptional opportunity enabled Dr. Obedencio to deepen his expertise and prepare to share this vital knowledge as a certified trainer. As part of the training, he was given the opportunity to serve as a trainer during the Pre-Conference Workshops held on September 3-4, 2024. He delivered the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Training on the Transport of Infectious Substances and Biological Materials at the 17th Asia-Pacific Biosafety Association Annual Conference, in conjunction with the BioRisk Association of the Philippines 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum at the Crowne Plaza Galleria, Quezon City.

Dr. Obedencio was given a comprehensive training kit and essential resources as part of SNL's generous training grant, allowing him to conduct future trainings. This initiative will help train laboratory personnel, biosafety officers, researchers, and laboratory managers in Mindanao and throughout the Philippines.

This training ensures that the highest levels of safety and compliance are maintained in the transportation of infectious substances, thereby protecting public health and safety.

📢PROJECT UPDATE: Promoting Awareness on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through Research and Training

Last June 2024, CMU-CVM joined a significant research initiative aimed at assessing the "Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) on Antimicrobial Use and Resistance" among agricultural and poultry suppliers. This survey was conducted in Valencia City and Maramag as part of a project spearheaded by Pampanga State Agricultural University, in collaboration with four other state universities, including CMU, under the Philippine One Health University Network (PhilOHUN).

The objective of the research was to gauge the KAP levels of agricultural retailers and suppliers, which served as a basis for developing a training program to enhance their understanding and practices regarding antimicrobial use.

Building on this initiative, a "Capability Development (CapDev) Seminar" focusing on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was held on August 16, 2024 at the CVM Audio Visual Hall for 5th and 6th-year clinical students of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Another seminar was conducted later that day at El Comedor Lounge, Valencia City, for agricultural and veterinary supply business owners/retailers and LGU representatives from Maramag and Valencia City.

This project, funded by PHILOHUN, was a collaborative effort led by Dr. Maria Fe S. Bulao from PSU, with her research assistant Ms. Angela Grace Dizon, and Mr. Miguel Lorenzo Marasigan, Project Manager and PHILOHUN staff. The CMU counterpart was headed by Dr. Maria Lebeña B. Montemayor as facilitator and Area Coordinator for Mindanao, and Dr. Carla Kristine Doysabas as Area Staff, with the support of several CVM faculty members, including Dr. Catherine T. Albano, Dr. Marlou Jebb C. Andres, Dr. Philip John S. Sajol, and others.

This project is part of CMU-CVM’s commitment to collaborate with partner universities across the country on research and extension initiatives, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: Wildlife Animal Handling and Conservation

On August 12, 2024, CMU-CVM successfully hosted the Wildlife Animal Handling and Conservation event at the CMU-CVM Hall. The event gathered Junior and Senior student clinicians, 2nd Year DVM students, along with faculty and staff, for an insightful day focused on the importance of wildlife management and conservation.

The event's highlight was a captivating lecture from Mr. Aikee Jay Veloso, a CMU Alumnus from BS Biology Batch 2007 and a seasoned Reptile In-Charge Specialist at Fame Park Dubai, UAE. With nearly two decades of experience in zoo keeping and wildlife management, Mr. Veloso shared his wealth of knowledge and expertise, drawing from his experiences as Head Keeper at Dubai Safari, Reptile Keeper at Emirates Park Zoo, and Education Officer at Crocolandia in Cebu.

Participants had the unique opportunity to learn essential wildlife handling techniques and gain a deeper understanding of conservation efforts. The event fostered a strong sense of responsibility among future veterinarians and conservationists in preserving wildlife and their habitats.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Veloso for sharing his valuable insights and to all who participated in making this event a success!
