Let me start by saying that there are no perfect dogs. Dog trainers aren't here to help you create a robot dog who follows all your "commands" and are expected 100% to "behave" wherever they are or whatever situation they're in.

Throughout my career as a dog trainer, I've encountered lots of people asking me how to teach their dogs to not bark, to not lunge, etc. People have asked me to train their dogs to "Stay" for whatever duration and only move when told or "released". Some requests sound like "My dog is scared of motorcycles, teach him how to stay still when there's a motorcycle passing by" and many others.

The main point is to some people, they think "I hired a dog trainer. I'm training my dog so that my dog will DO something." Everyone was so concerned about teaching their dog to DO something such as a cue or what to do when stimuli is present.

It is high time for us to understand that dog training isn't just about teaching your dogs what to do. It's about teaching them and patiently guiding them on how to feel about people, situations, other dogs, sounds, and things. We can't do this without taking a very important step first: Understanding that when we expect too much from our dogs without taking steps to teach them positively, we are already setting them up to fail.

A big part of my job is to set my clients - both humans and dogs - up for success. This starts with the proper education, patience and love, and commitment to training.

When I ask people "Is your dog socialized?", most of them say something about their dog meeting other dogs. Socialization is not just about your dog meeting other dogs. It's not about bringing your dogs to the daycare to meet other dogs. It's an important part of your dog's life that is usually skipped because most dog owners know very little of it.

Socialization is important not just for you, your dog and others to be safe. It's essential to your dog's well-being and confidence. The more you socialize your puppy, with people, objects, dogs, other animals, sounds, touches, and situations (indoors, outdoors, etc), the better his response will be when exposed to these things. Additionally, if your puppy is hesitant about something and then gets over it, the more his confidence grows.

You are setting your puppy up for success when you properly socialize him! You are basically preparing your puppy for the real world!

One of the important topics we teach in our courses is socialization. If you want to start your puppy's socialization right, head on over to our link in bio to register to our courses. Adult dogs can also learn new things and habituate but it will take longer. We're here to guide you on how to teach your dog - whether you have a puppy or an older dog.

"I love her so much. I would die for her" - We all love our dogs and I strongly believe our dogs love us back too!

Meet Justine and Wendy 💖 They enrolled to the Adult Dog Parent Course to work on an unwanted barking habit. Every time Justine would walk her or wherever they would go, Wendy would always bark. But because of the Adult Parent Course, Justine understood that barking isn’t a problem rather Wendy trying to communicate how she feels in certain situations.

Justine and Wendy learned how to communicate better and worked together to increase tolerance and reinforce calm behavior around Wendy’s triggers. It just takes knowing the right motivators and really understanding the root cause of their behavior.

Because of positive training, Justine and Wendy has an even stronger bond and walking outside became a more fun bonding activity!

It's never too late for your adult dog! This can be your story too. We'd love to journey with you and your dog and help you help your dog become the best he can be!

We all know Beagles. They are very active with no energy to waste!

Meet Bailey and Stephen. Bailey used to be a dog that loves to destroy things even in a puppy-proofed home. But thank you to his pet parent Stephen who believed in positive training and transformation, they now come home to a clean home without Bailey destroying anything! Bailey has been a very good boy since then who makes better choices!

Dog training is not overnight and is definitely a process. But having a positive outlook and a motivated mindset for you and your dog makes the process bearable and most especially worth it— just like Stephen and Bailey. This is why we are here to go through the journey with you and achieve these long-term results and transformation!

A dog's brain is wired for smell. We often forget this superpower that all dogs possess! I encounter a lot of people who take pride that their dogs aren't sniffing when they go on walks. Anyone who tells that you that dogs should not sniff during walks and should only walk by your side is terrible advice. Dogs aren't made to "heel" all the time and to walk on a short leash with so much restrictions. They are wired to use their noses to process and gather information about the environment. It soothes them, lowers their pulse rate, and most importantly, it helps them navigate their surroundings better.

Our primary goal at The Pet Parent is for our clients to have long-term results. We teach them how dogs communicate and learn, and how they can teach them in the way they can understand even after their program with us ends.

Here is one of my favorite dad-dog duo: Alberto and Pin. I am working with them to overcome Pin's fears and build his confidence. Watch how they work through a game I call "Trail of Treats" to create new and positive associations with going out of the door. The game is designed to use a dog's natural way of interacting with the world which is through sniffing. The trails of treats towards the door allows Alberto to feed Pin in the presence of a trigger, reinforce the anticipatory behavior, and get Pin to easily disengage and move forward to the door. Cheer them on as they go through this journey with us!

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there! Most of our clients at .co are women. I just want to use this time to honor and celebrate all of you. You come to us with hopeful hearts, unwavering commitment, and just pure great love for your dogs. Positive training isn't easy for anyone and I admire your perseverance and dedication to helping your dogs become the best they can be. This is not just about teaching your dogs basic commands or tricks. I've seen dog moms heartbroken because their case is emotionally taxing, difficult, and sometimes, it can feel like it's impossible to overcome. But, you NEVER give up on your dog. You are STILL THERE. You always SHOW UP.

Each and every one of you is an inspiration to me, a fellow dog mom, to keep going, to keep helping, and to keep showing up especially during the hard stuff. Let's celebrate strong women who love their dogs and treat them as their very very own. Happy mother's day to us! Thank you for helping us build a world for

What does it really look like to train your dog positively? 🤔

When we train our dogs positively, we DO NOT use fear, pain, or intimidation.

It is challenging to train dogs positively because not only does it require a deep understanding of how dogs learn and communicate, most importantly, it requires INNER WORK, a mindset shift, a lifestyle change from us as pet parents. Why? Because our dogs look up to us for information. They try to communicate with us. Our behavior influences their behavior. This is what I mean by dog training is a relationship. It’s not just “fixing the dog”. It never was. It’s about you and your dog.

There are a lot of dog trainers that claim that they use positive reinforcement. But you see them using prong collars, choke collars, slip collars, poking methods, jerking the leash, and provoking dogs around their triggers and waiting for them to react then forcefully pulling them by the neck. I just recently read a post about a dog trainer pushing a dog to exhaustion that the dog’s trachea collapsed from the slip leash. These are not positive methods. This is a perfect example of shortcut training because aversives yield “fast results”.

Dog training is a two-way relationship and it requires a lot of work from both the dog and the pet parent. Dog training isn’t something you “do to the dog”. The question is, is this something you’re ready to do for your best friend? 🐕♥️

It's Walk Your Dog Day today! So I thought of posting about why your dog isn't responding well to walking on a leash.

First, let me list a few familiar scenarios of what this can look like:
- Your dog is lunging towards people or other dogs
- Your dog is picking up everything he sees from the ground
- Your freezes up and doesn't want to move
- And the most common, your dog keeps pulling you everywhere

Your first step to teaching your dog walk on a leash is to practice at home. Yes, practice at home. This is the best environment for your dog to feel safe and to learn because it's a low-distraction environment. It's easier to teach them in a place where you don't have to compete with other stimuli such as noises, scents, and moving vehicles or people.

Second, I mentioned the word "safe". Dogs not in terms or right vs wrong, they learn in terms of safe vs dangerous. If there are unfamiliar things and events happening around your dog, how can you expect your dog to enjoy his walk. He might be anxious or scared or overstimulated in that environment that's why he's not responding well.

Lastly, let's skip labeling our dogs as "stubborn" or "aggressive" when they don't walk properly on a leash. Let's meet them where they are and adjust our expectations so we can teach them and design the environments we put them in better to get the results that we want.

Save this for your next walk!

❓How do you spend time with your dog? 🤔

Do you cuddle him a lot?
Do you feel frustrated when your dog misbehaves?
Do you take him on walks often?

Some people have the luxury to spend all the time with their dogs. Others try their best to spend time with them when they’re free. Some people don’t spend time with them at all.

❓ How do you think your dog feels about the time they spend time with you? 🐕🤔

Dogs feel happy too. Dogs feel sad and scared too. Dogs want to be happy just as much as you do. They get confused when they’re scolded. They get scared when they’re left alone. They are happy when they feel loved. They are excited when you teach them new things.

Be more and do more for them. Train them positively. Play with them. Communicate with them. Make an effort to understand them better so they could live up to their potential. Make time for your dogs. Make it count no matter how much time that may be.

Dog training is all about relationship. It’s rooted in trust and strengthened through communication.

Here are Cloud and Katsu and we’re working closely with their family members to help these dogs build a better relationship with each other.

I am so proud by how far they’ve come. They couldn’t meet face to face before for fear of a fight starting. But now, through positive training and reinforcement of calm behavior around each other, they can stay peacefully be around each other with supervision.

Dogs are different in their own ways. This is why I make sure to connect with them first, to establish trust, and respect their needs. As people, we sometimes think that when we want our dogs to behave a certain way, we can just force it on them without realizing that we are expecting too much.

Just like Cloud’s and Katsu’s family, I encourage everyone to take your dog’s training one step at a time with love and patience, trusting that they are willing to learn and live harmoniously with you and other dogs.

We know Katsu and Cloud’s relationship will get even better with the care and love of their family and hope we get to see them playing together someday soon! ♥️🐕🌏
