What’s the difference between 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗬 and 𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟 cats?

𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗧:
• Is a cat who has been socialized to people at some point in her life, but has left or lost her indoor home, as well as most human contact and dependence.
• Can become a feral cat as her contact with people dwindles.
• Can under the right circumstances become a pet cat once again. Stray cats who are re-introduced to a home after living outdoors may require a period of time to re-acclimate; they may be frightened and wary after spending time outside away from people.

𝗔 𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗔𝗧:
• Is a cat who has either never had any contact with people or her contact with people has diminished over time. She is not socialized to people and survives on her own outdoors. Most community cats are not likely to ever become lap cats or enjoy living indoors.
• Can have kittens who can be socialized at an early age and adopted into homes.

🖤 Debunking myths, one purr at a time! 🐾

Today, August 17, is Black Cat Appreciation Day, let's celebrate these stunning, smart, and affectionate furballs.

𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐒 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐒 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐒:

1️⃣ 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 - The well known superstition is that it’s bad luck if a black cat crosses your path.
𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇 - In some cultures, black cats are lucky! In Scotland, the arrival of a black cat on your doorstep symbolizes prosperity.

2️⃣ 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 - Black cats are associated with evil and witches.
𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇 - Not true. In ancient Egypt, black cats are associated with the Gods. To kill one is a capital crime!

3️⃣𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 - Adoption rate is not as low as it seems because black cat are more common than any other color of cat.
𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇 - Many animal shelters report that it takes black cats longer to find homes than cats of other colors.

Share your love for black cats and help spread the word - they're not bad luck, they're just pawsome! 😻

𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘 provides kittens with opportunities to practice skills they would normally need for survival. Kittens like to explore new areas and investigate anything that moves, and may bat at, pounce on and bite objects that resemble prey. They learn how to inhibit their bite from their littermates and their mother.

The Science Behind the Cuteness 😍

While we marvel at the sheer cuteness of a kitten's stretch, there's also a fascinating scientific explanation behind it. Stretching helps to stimulate blood flow and prepare the muscles for activity. In kittens, this action is essential for their growth and development, ensuring they stay healthy and active.

Witness the adorable stretch of this little kitten and let your heart melt!

A notable part of our feline friend’s face, are their 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗞𝗘𝗥𝗦.

A cat without whiskers would undoubtedly look unusual to most people, and you might be surprised at how essential these seemingly insignificant structures are to your cat!

Cat whiskers do some pretty amazing things such as:

1. 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗖𝗛: The follicles that these hairs grow from are surrounded by sensory cells. These cells transmit tactile information that’s similar to the signals our fingertips send to our brains. This helps our mostly farsighted felines to:

- Better evaluate their environment up close
- Avoid threats to their eyes and face, like branches and insects
- Hunt better at night
- Be able to judge whether they can fit through small spaces

2. 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: Some whisker follicle cells also have proprioceptive ability, meaning that the way gravity pulls on the hair will tell a cat how they are oriented in relation to the ground. That’s very important for an animal who is always supposed to land on their feet!

3. 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: There is evidence to suggest that cat whiskers may be involved in communicating with other cats and even observant owners. Tiny muscles around the base of the whiskers allow stressed cats to point their whiskers toward potential threats and relax them when they are content. A cat who doesn’t feel well may pull their whiskers back against their face in a grimace.

The majority of cats have 18 toes: 5 on each of the front feet, and 4 on each of the hind paws.

Cats typically have four toes on their back paws because they are digitigrade animals, meaning they walk on their toes rather than the soles of their feet. These toes provide balance, agility, and speed, allowing cats to move quietly and efficiently. The structure of their feet is adapted to their predatory nature, enabling them to stalk and pounce on prey with precision.

However, a genetic abnormality called 𝙿𝚘𝚕𝚢𝚍𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚢𝚕 leads some cats to have some sneaky extra digits!

On average, a female cat is in heat for four to seven days. However, her heat may last as short as 2 days or as long as 3 weeks. Unspayed female cats of reproductive age are called 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗦. Cats are 𝙿𝙾𝙻𝚈𝙴𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙾𝚄𝚂, this mean they typically go into heat multiple times a year until they mate.

1. 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦: The queen may attract unneutered males, but she is not receptive to mating yet. Proestrus typically lasts a day or two. Queens in proestrus typically show no outward signs.

2. 𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦: Next, the queen enters estrus, or heat. For about a week, she will attract males & is receptive to mating. During this stage, the queen may vocalize loudly, roll around, rub on things, & elevate her rear end. She may also have a decreased appetite. If the queen mates during estrus, this will induce ovulation. Cat are 𝙸𝙽𝙳𝚄𝙲𝙴𝙳 𝙾𝚅𝚄𝙻𝙰𝚃𝙾𝚁𝚂, the act of mating stimulates hormone production that triggers ovulation. Queens typically need to mate about four to six times during estrus to become pregnant. The queen may mate with several males while she is in heat & give birth to a litter of kittens that have different fathers.

3. 𝗗𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦: If the queen becomes pregnant, she would enter the diestrus phase. During this time, progesterone is the dominant hormone, & the queen's fertilized eggs become embryos. The embryos become implanted in the uterus 12 to 13 days after mating. Not all embryos survive this process though, but about 84% would be successfully implanted in the uterus.

4. 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦: If the queen does not mate or become pregnant during estrus, she will go on to interestrus. Her estrogen level drops & she exhibits no specific signs. After about two days to three weeks, she will once again go into heat. The cycle of proestrus, estrus, and interestrus will continue throughout the mating season or until the queen becomes pregnant.

5. 𝗔𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦: This is the queen's reproductively dormant period. Her reproductive hormones are not active & there is an absence of estrus cycling activity. Indoor cats are exposed to long periods of artificial light & therefore may continue to go through heat cycles all year round.

A pet and its owner share a very particular bond that cannot be broken. For the "pet parents," this special bond—which can endure for many years—is frequently an essential aspect of daily life. They view their cherished pets as members of the family.

Some pet parents are new to the experience. Others are repeat performers. No matter how many pets or how often they engage in the relationship, it's a special one every time.

26/04/2024

Even though our feline friends descend from desert environments, they are still susceptible to heat stroke in extremely hot weather, both indoors and outdoors.

Like dogs, cats can only sweat out of their noses and the base of their paws; to cool themselves down, they rely mainly on panting, drinking water and resting in shaded areas or on cool surfaces.

If a cat’s body temperature rises and they are unable to cool themselves down, they’ll quickly become distressed. If these conditions persist, the cat will suffer heat exhaustion, which could lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke can cause cats to lose consciousness, or even to have seizures.

Prevent heat stroke in cats by making sure they have access to hydration and a cool environment at all times. Cats will be cats – they’re natural explorers, but it can be a good idea to keep them indoors during hotter parts of the day. Ensure water is readily available, keep the windows open and even think about treating your cat by giving them a cooling mat or frozen water bottle to relax on.

Posted are warning signs you need to look out for in case you believe your cat is overheating. Consult a vet immediately in case symptoms persist!

𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐓!!! 🥵

While our canine friends lounge on surf boards and play in sprinklers, what will a cat do? Hunt for the coziest spot on the bathroom floor? Let us give them something to purr about this summer season!

Here are tips to keep your cool cats even cooler! 😻

1. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: Remember to always provide safe and clean water to drink. Swap their usual water bowl with a fountain to entice them.

2. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚: Cracking a window open and turning on a fan might do the trick on hot summer days.

3. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭: No AC? A cooling mat could do the trick. Just be sure it's made to withstand cat nails, or trim your cat's nails before use.

4. 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠: A lion cut can provide a lot of comfort especially long-haired cats.

5. 𝐃𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Cats aren't great at thermoregulation, which is why you'll catch your floof sprawling out on the cool tile floor during the hottest of days. But they do have one spot on their bodies where they perspire and cool slightly with the evaporation of sweat—their paws. If you're concerned your cat is hot, putting cool water on the cat's paws can cool them down.

6. 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝: Wet food can pack up to 66% more water than dry food, helping to prevent dehydration and keep your cat cool. Even better, chill the wet food before serving it to see if your cat likes cold food (some cats prefer room-temperature or warm food, no matter the weather).

7. 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞: Heatstroke is a serious threat! Be vigilant and act fast if you notice symptoms and get them to a vet asap!

8. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬: As for how to keep your friendly neighborhood feral cool—share fresh water and serve wet cat food by placing it in a shady spot.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 - 𝟵𝟵.𝟲% - 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙚!

The reason for this comes down their chromosomes. Just like humans, female cats have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y chromosome. A female tortoiseshell kittens inherit a gene for black coat color from one parent and orange coat color from the other parent.

If a male tortie does happen to be born, it’s likely because they have an extra strand of DNA with an additional X chromosome (XXY). Unfortunately, this chromosome imbalance will also make any male torties 𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘓𝘌.
