🐶🐱 Updates on the Use of Transfusion Therapy in the Critical Patient
🧪💉 VetEducation
🩸 https://veteducation.com/updates-on-the-use-of-transfusion-therapy-in-the-critical-patient/
Presenter: Dr. Philip Judge
📅 Date: April 2, 2025 | 🕢 Time: 19:30 AEDT
🎥 Format: Live & Interactive

Overview:

Transfusion therapy remains a cornerstone of critical care in veterinary medicine, yet questions persist regarding when and how to use products like plasma, albumin, and whole blood. This webinar explored the latest literature on transfusion strategies in dogs and cats, focusing on emergency and critical conditions such as lung disease, sepsis, trauma-induced coagulopathy, DIC, and brain injury. The discussion provided insights into evidence-based approaches and clarified where knowledge gaps still exist, helping practitioners make informed, life-saving decisions.

1. There is currently little evidence for the use of fresh frozen plasma in dogs and cats to correct coagulopathy due to sepsis, in the absence of clinical bleeding.
✅ True
While commonly administered, studies show minimal benefit when there’s no active bleeding in septic patients.

2. The target PCV to achieve with whole blood transfusion in a patient exhibiting symptoms of decompensation due to acute red blood cell loss is…
🩸 27%
A PCV of 27% supports optimal oxygen delivery and stabilizes the patient, aligning with transfusion goals in acute hemorrhage.

3. Early use of fresh frozen plasma in humans has resulted in improved clinical outcomes in which of the following conditions?
🫁 Pulmonary contusions
FFP has shown benefit in reducing complications from lung trauma, which may translate to better care strategies in vet med.

4. Fresh frozen plasma transfusion in septic patients may reduce the concentration of glycocalyx biomarkers - although the clinical significance of this is currently unclear.
🧬 True
Lower biomarkers suggest endothelial protection, but clinical outcomes haven’t been definitively linked yet.

5. Early transfusion therapy in patients with trauma-associated coagulopathy and severe trauma is associated with improved survival.
✅ True
⏱️ Early intervention helps restore clotting function, supporting patient survival in high-risk trauma cases.
