DID YOU KNOW?
The Head Bob
When bearded dragons feel they have dominated something or someone they may bob their heads. This is literally what it sounds like—they bob their head as though they were saying "yes." More dominant beardies may do this in passing to younger beardies. Younger bearded dragons may do "the wave" while the older or more dominant dragon may concurrently "head bob."

REPTILE FEEDING TIPS
Food and Water for Veiled Chameleons
Veiled chameleons are mostly insectivores so they should be fed a variety of insects every other day. Crickets are usually the mainstay of the diet but locusts, roaches, butterworms (good for calcium), silkworms, flies, and grasshoppers can be fed, as well as mealworms, superworms, and waxworms (in limited quantities as they are high in fat).
Be wary of wild-caught insects due to possible exposure to pesticides and always avoid feeding a lizard ants or fireflies. All insects should be gut loaded. Many veiled chameleons will also eat a bit of plant matter so it is vital that only non-toxic plants are used in your chameleon's enclosure.
You can offer small amounts of vegetables and fruits such as dandelion leaves, collard greens, kale, diced zucchini, butternut squash, red pepper, blueberries, and thin slices of apple or pear. Monitor your chameleon and adjust feeding amounts as needed. If many insects are left uneaten or your chameleon is too full-bodied you may want to reduce the amount you're feeding them.
Never leave live prey in the cage for extended periods of time as insects may attack your chameleon, which can lead to infection.
It is prudent to dust insects with a calcium/vitamin D3 supplement two to three times a week. A multi-vitamin and mineral supplement can be added once a week. Some experts recommend choosing a supplement that does not contain vitamin A, use beta-carotene instead.

WORD OF THE DAY
Thermoregulate
To regulate body temperature. Most reptiles cannot produce their own body heat and must rely on external or environmental heat sources. They control their core body temperatures by moving in and out of areas with varying temperatures and humidity levels.

REPTILE FUN FACTS
Reptiles digest food slower than mammals. This is due to a slower metabolism but also the fact that many reptiles do not masticate (or chew) on their prey. Many just swallow it whole.

DID YOU KNOW?
Why Do Pet Reptiles Need Heat?
Heat is particularly important for reptiles. As with all animals, it's necessary for a reptile to be able to move its muscles to catch prey or run from danger, and to digest its food. Heat is also important for reptiles to be able to reproduce, efficiently circulate their blood, and maintain a healthy immune system.

REPTILE FEEDING TIPS
Does My Reptile Need Supplements?
It is recommended to all land lizards, and indoor tortoises and land turtles receive supplements. Reptiles outdoors don't typically require supplements as long as they are on an appropriate diet.
Provide Important Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is by far the most important vitamin in reptile nutrition. In nature a reptile synthesizes vitamin D3 via the skin's absorption of ultraviolet rays from the sun.

REPTILE VET INFO
Parasites
Parasites, especially pinworms, are common in pet iguanas. They often cause no clinical signs and are detected on an annual f***l examination. In some cases, they may cause diarrhea or weight loss. Pinworms are probably commensal organisms (commensalism is an association between two organisms in which one individual benefits from the relationship while the other is neither benefited nor harmed). Mites and ticks are often found on the skin of iguana. They are spread from other iguanas, and are not from around your house. Mites and ticks are often seen moving around, under or between scales around the head and in skin folds.
Several deworming medications are available either as an oral or injectable drug. The type of parasite identified on the microscopic f***l examination will determine which drug is needed. Mites and ticks can be treated either topically or with oral or injectable medication as dictated by your veterinarian. Environmental cleaning, disinfecting and treatment may be needed as well.

WORD OF THE DAY
Rostral (horns) - Horns around the nose area.
Green iguanas are a varied group. Like humans, they come in a range of colors and attributes. Some are brown/tan/cream, while others are blue. In breeding season and out, some are brilliant orange or look like they got rusty in the rain.
Some have fleshy protrusions on the top of their nose (rostrum). They may be small nubs, or may actually jut out enough to be called "horns". Some may have one, or two, or three nubs or horns of various sizes.

REPTILE FEEDING TIPS
Omnivorous by nature, sailfin dragons eat just about anything known to be edible and healthy. Babies should be fed as often as they feel the need to eat. Try insects (such as crickets, superworms, cockroaches and Phoenix Worms) in the morning, and dust insects with calcium and vitamin D3.

REPTILE VET INFO
Hypervitaminosis D
Hypervitaminosis D is a condition that develops when owners either over-supplement the iguana's diet with vitamins and minerals or feed it dog or cat food. Clinical signs are vague and include lack of appetite and lethargy.
Excessive supplementation of vitamin D combined with plentiful calcium may result in soft-tissue calcification. Over supplementation of vitamin D and calcium is thought to be one of the main causes of renal disease in mature lizards, especially green iguanas and bearded dragons.
It is a serious problem that requires hospitalization and intensive therapy with fluids, force-feeding, and medications to help lower the iguana's calcium level. Dietary modification is necessary for long term treatment.

WORD OF THE DAY
Ectotherms
Snakes, like all reptiles are ECTOTHERMS. They rely on external sources (like the sun) to give them energy. They will move between basking in the sun and hiding in the shade to keep their bodies at their preferred temperature. Without warmth snakes do not have enough energy to digest their food or move around.

REPTILE FUN FACTS
Snakes Do Not Hibernate
Unlike many warm-blooded animals, snakes don't actually hibernate in the winter. Instead, snakes go into a state known as brumation where snakes become less active and their metabolism slows down tremendously.

REPTILE VET INFO
Infectious Stomatitis
Infectious stomatitis is reported in snakes, lizards, and turtles and characterized early by petechiae in the oral cavity; caseous material develops along the dental arcades as the condition worsens. In severe cases, infection spreads to cause osteomyelitis of the mandible and maxilla.
Mouth rot is the common name given to the medical condition known as stomatitis. It occurs when bacteria overgrow inside the mouth causing pain, swelling and infection. This can lead to tissue in the mouth dying and rotting, hence the name mouth rot.
Treatment for mouth rot usually includes a course of antibiotics and a cleaning of the reptile's mouth with an antiseptic. Surgery to remove badly damaged oral tissues may be necessary in severe cases. Animals that are unable to eat and drink while they are recovering will need fluid therapy and nutritional support.

WORD OF THE DAY
Plastron
It is the ventral shield or shell of tortoises and turtles. The plastron covers the underside of a sea turtle.
With healthy turtle shell peeling and shedding, the scutes will simply fall off, as a whole (usually). And not just from the top of their shells. The bottom of your turtle's shell will also peel off, as will the sides and the smaller scutes lining the edges.

One of the key ingredients of a successful business is trust! Trust, as one would describe, is a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone around you. As the Reptilab and Alpendorf family gets bigger and bigger, it is an essential factor to build trust amongst ourselves. We have conducted an activity earlier this morning, called Trust Fall. A trust fall is a team-building exercise in which a person deliberately falls, trusting the members of a group to catch them. Our main goal is to reaffirm the trust of the falling person in the persons who are catching him/her. After the activity, it was not just trust that was established. Upon the completion of the exercise, we have also learned that we are protected by each other, individuals learned to cooperate with one another and lastly, we have built reliance upon each other. We believe in the saying ~ “The people when rightly and fully trusted, will return the trust.”
