From suspected toxicity to surgery.

How did this happen?

This is the story of Butchoy, a 3-year-old intact Yorkshire/Shih Tzu mix, who presented with lethargy, abdominal pain, and distention accompanied by persistent vomiting. According to the owner, Butchoy is suspected of having lemon grass ingestion; after a complete history taking and careful examination, it appears that Butchoy’s condition is not due to plant toxicity because of incomplete and not related evidence.

Laboratory tests (CBC, biochemistry) and diagnostic imaging were then conducted to rule out other causes, and we found out that the main reason for Butchoy’s suffering is that he has a condition called urethral blockage/obstruction due to urethral calculi/stone (formation is due to high concentrations of salts and minerals in the urine).

The calculi that are developed within the urinary tract will get stuck within the urethra, and eventually it will block the exit of urine. This is a medical emergency that requires urgent actions. Flushing out the urethra to push back the stones to the bladder and manage it with medications to dissolve the stones is one of them, but unluckily it doesn’t work on Butchoy’s condition, so our team decided to do a scrotal urethrostomy (a surgery that creates a permanent opening in a male dog’s urethra).

Surgery went well without any complications, and the wound healed properly with the help of laser treatment. 🙂

Butchoy is now back to normal and happy life 😊
