TRUTH ABOUT VETERINARIANS CLIENTS DON'T USUALLY KNOW.

A shih tzu was turned over to us. Her owner begged us to save her dog. She was incapacitated due to challenges in mental health. We took Aira in as I know how hard it is to care for a very sick dog while also trying to cope up with mental health issues.

I thought it was a simple case of intestinal prolapse. The clinic did what they could do and performed the safest surgery and procedures possible for her case. But Aira, the dog continued to have prolapse. She was declared in need of a more complicated surgery. However, her severe case of amoebiasis delayed the needed surgery. Again, the treatment had to be done first. Weeks we waited for her to recuperate, bit she was up and down. We reached the moment when we know that its a damn if you do, damn if you don't. But her veterinarian was willing to try. Personally, my hopes were low, as I saw how Aira's body was not cooperating even after two weeks of treatment and stay in the clinic.

Her veterinarian, as any veterinarian should be, still wanted to do what she knows she could in order to save her patient's life.

She prayed before the surgery. She is a tough woman, and she trusts her Higher Power in everything she does which is admireable.

She prayed that whatever she does, she be guided that it is the best for Aira. When she openned Aira, what she feared the most laid in front of her. Aira's intestines were rotting already. And she knew the chances were small. She prayed hard. She really wanted to help Aira. She completed the complicated surgery. She prayed fervently again.

At the wee hour of the night, I recieved a message from her telling that the surgery was completed and Aira is still alive and currently stable. She got through the surgery, and all she had to wait for was for Aira to wake up later.

An hour later, Aira woke up to her veterinarian's delight. Aira waking up was for her a miracle, and she was so happy. I could feel her glee while I was reading her message. More than working so hard on the surgery, she prayed so hard for Aira.

The painful news came a couple of hours later when Aira suddenly had cardiac arrest.

She sent me a message that Aira expired despite reviving her. I felt her pain when she said, "I did what I could. I prayed so hard for her and for guidance."

She cried upon knowing Aira crossed the rainbow bridge.

I was consoling her and assuring that what she did was the best for Aira, and she gave all her best to save her. She told me that it was ironic because now a client is comforting the veterinarian. She was not blaming herself, but she really hoped Aira would get through and to live in a better condition.

Not many understand the feelings of veterinarians when their patients cross. Most owners only see themselves, but rarely recognize the pain veterinarians feel when their patients don't make it. Patients interact with their veterinarians too. Even in a short period in the clinic, veterinarians and staff build relationhips with their patients, and it hurts them see their patients struggle.

Veterinarians are not perfect, but they do their best.

Here, Aira's veterinarian, Doc Annalyn P. Raquel of Shrine Pet Care Center was fighting exhaustion while on a chair monitoring a patient even after performing a surgery. This is dedication beyond words.

Salute to Doc Ann.
