EXTRAGENITAL CANINE TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOR.

Canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) also known as infectious sarcoma or Sticker's tumor is a reticuloendothelial tumor in dogs. CTVT is a cancer that causes nodular tumors in dogs, the tumor often has a cauliflower-like appearance. This cancer is unique compared to other neoplasms, because its growth is not spontaneous but transmission is via sexual contact, licking, biting and sniffing the tumor.

CTVT affects mainly the ge***al organs of dogs but there are extrage***al lesions such as skin, mouth, eye, and nasal area. Extrage***al CTVT is difficult to diagnose, especially when the affected dogs lack concurrent ge***al lesions. Microscopically, it is characterized by the presence of vacuolized round cells.

At Southvalley Veterinary Clinic, we specialize in cytopathology to diagnose cancer early and accurately. If you notice a lump on your pet, don't wait—bring them in immediately. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and our diagnostic tools ensure we catch any issues as soon as possible, giving your pet the best chance for a healthy future.

High magnification histopath illustrating mammary gland sarcoma in a dog.

Mammary gland tumors are common in older, intact female dogs. Approximately half of these tumors are benign, while the other half are malignant. Mammary gland sarcomas are particularly rare in canines, accounting for only 10-15% of canine mammary tumors.

The gold-standard treatment for mammary gland tumors is surgery. The veterinarian will resect the tumor or the entire affected mammary gland. The prognosis is generally favorable following surgical resection, though chemotherapy may be necessary in some cases.

At Southvalley Veterinary Clinic, we excel in diagnosing and treating even the rarest of cases, ensuring your pet receives the best possible care.

Female earmite (Otodectes cynotis) under the microscope (100x).

Magnified view of a female earmite. Female earmites have a cup-like sucker or caruncle on the first and second pairs of legs (legs 1 and 2). Males have suckers on all legs (legs 1, 2, 3, and 4).

Ear mites, also known as "ear scabies," are tiny parasites that resemble microscopic ticks. These mites live inside the pet’s ear canal and consume ear wax for nutrition. Eggs are laid and hatch after 4 days of incubation. Adults can live up to 2 months inside the ear.

Ear mites can be extremely irritating to the pet; they can fill the ear canal with debris and cause ear infections. There are currently several prescription drugs available that can eradicate ear mite infections. These products may be applied directly in the ear, to the pet's skin, by injection, or orally.

If you suspect your dog has mites, schedule an appointment with a vet right away. Proper treatment will help your pet avoid complications in the future. Contact Southvalley Veterinary Clinic for more details.

Did you know kidney stones and urinary bladder stones can affect our furry friends too? Check out this fascinating picture of a kidney stone and a urinary bladder stone. The urinary bladder stone looks like a tiny block of soap in the x-ray—imagine that!

To keep your pets happy and healthy, here are some tips to avoid these pesky stones:

1.) Hydration is Key: Ensure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water. Hydration helps flush out minerals that could form stones.
2.) Balanced Diet: Feed your pet a balanced diet recommended by your vet. Certain diets can reduce the risk of stone formation.
3.) Regular Vet Check-ups: Regular check-ups can help catch any issues early. Your vet can provide tailored advice to prevent stones.
4.) Encourage Frequent Potty Breaks: Regular bathroom breaks help keep the urinary system functioning well and reduce the risk of stone formation.

If you notice any signs of discomfort, difficulty urinating, or changes in your pet's behavior, contact your vet immediately. Preventing stones is much easier than treating them!

Keep those tails wagging and those purrs purring! For more details, get in touch with Southvalley Veterinary Clinic. Your pet’s health is our top priority!
