Pyometra is a serious and life-threatening infection in the uterus. The condition must be treated quickly and aggressively.secondary infesction due to hormonal changes in a female's reproductive tract. Following estrus (heat), progesterone levels remain elevated for several weeks, stimulating the uterine lining to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several estrus cycles, the lining increases in thickness until cysts form in the uterus. This condition is called cystic endometrial hyperplasia. The thickened cystic lining secretes fluids, creating an ideal environment where bacteria can grow. Additionally, high progesterone levels inhibit the ability of the muscles in the wall of the uterus to contract and expel accumulated fluids or bacteria.

A lipoma is a common, benign (harmless) fat tumor seen in middle-aged to older animals. These tumors occur often in dogs and infrequently in cats. They can vary greatly in their rate of growth. Some may remain the same size for years, while others may grow very large.

Lipomas can become problematic if they cause discomfort for your pet or if they grow in locations that affect your pet’s ability to walk. Lipomas can grow anywhere (even inside the abdomen), but the most common place is under the skin, where fat is normally present. If they grow between layers of muscle, they are called infiltrative lipomas.

The malignant form of this tumor is called liposarcoma. Fortunately, these tumors usually do not spread to other places in the body, but they require more extensive surgery to control them than lipomas.

An umbilical hernia in dogs is a birth defect where a weakness in the abdominal wall at the umbilicus (belly button) allows internal organs or fat to protrude, forming a soft swelling. This is typically a genetic condition where the umbilical ring doesn't close properly after birth. While small hernias may close on their own, larger ones often require surgical repair to prevent complications like strangulation, which can be life-threatening and cause signs such as vomiting, pain, and lethargy.
A lipoma is a common, slow-growing, benign tumor made of fat cells that typically appears as a soft, movable lump under the dog's skin, especially on the abdomen and chest. They are more common in older, overweight dogs and certain breeds like Labrador Retrievers, Dachshunds, and Dobermans. While usually harmless, a veterinary diagnosis via fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is crucial to rule out more serious growths like malignant liposarcomas. Treatment is only necessary for lipomas that cause discomfort or interfere with movement, with surgery being the primary option.

Lipomas are non-cancerous lumps of fat cells that develop underneath the dog’s skin. They typically grow slowly and can be found virtually anywhere there is fat present in the dog. The most common places lipomas are found are the chest, flank, limbs, abdomen, and back. They feel soft to the touch and are freely movable underneath the skin where they are located.

It’s very common indeed for an 8 week old puppy with an umbilical hernia to show up at my clinic when coming in for their first vaccinations. The hernias are nearly always small and nothing to worry about, though it is important that owners are aware of the possible risks associated with them.A hernia occurs when there’s a gap in the muscle, and something which should be on the inside comes outside. This is usually a small bit of fat or some peritoneum - but less commonly we can see something more serious, e.g. intestines. Umbilical hernias affect the umbilicus (belly button), so are found in the exact location of the belly button, on the lower portion of the dog’s abdomen in the midline.

The perineum, also known as the pelvic floor in humans, is the area between the a**s and the sc***um or v***a. This area supports the organs of the pelvis. A perineal hernia occurs when there is a weakening or traumatic tear in the muscles of the area, resulting in the bladder, intestines, or fat pushing through the muscle to an abnormal position just under the skin. Perineal hernias are most common in middle-aged or older unneutered male dogs and rarely occur in cats and female dogs.
A perineal hernia may appear as swelling on either or both sides of your dog’s a**s. Depending on how much tissue is herniated, it may even push the re**um to one side. The swelling is usually soft and can be reduced with pressure.
Dogs with perineal hernias often repeatedly strain as if to defecate, they may have difficulty passing stools and may become constipated. If the bladder has become herniated, they may also strain to urinate, have urinary incontinence, or be unable to urinate. In severe cases, such as when the intestine has herniated or if bladder herniation has caused a urinary obstruction, dogs will become lethargic and have a decreased appetite. Any compromise to the blood supply of the bladder or intestine could be life-threatening.
