FELINE WIWI EVERYHERE

Lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) covers a range of disorders from mild to serious. The signs of LUTD are usually referred to as lower urinary tract signs, or LUTS.

LUTD includes abnormalities in the structure and function of the bladder and the urethra (see figure). Surveys suggest that is the number one reason cats visit veterinary practices.

Clinical Signs
The most common signs of LUTD include:

Difficult or painful urination
Increased frequency of urination
Crying out while urinating
Blood in the urine
Inappropriate urination (that is, outside of the litter box)
Frequent licking of the ge***al region.

In cats, LUTS often have more than one cause and may be brought on by infections, inflammation, diet, and behavioral issues. Cats with urethral obstruction (see Common Causes of LUTS) will often show the above signs but will pass little or no urine and will become increasingly distressed. A urethral obstruction is an absolute emergency, requiring immediate veterinary treatment.

While cats of any age can show LUTS, it is most frequently seen in middle-aged, over-weight cats that get little exercise, use an indoor litter box, have restricted access outdoor environments, and drink less water. Male cats may be at an increased risk, and stressful environmental factors, including living in a multi-cat household and changes in routine, such as a move to a new home, may also increase the risk that a cat will develop LUTS.

RAT EVERYWHERE!!

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease, and many mammals are susceptible—including dogs, people, livestock, and certain wildlife. Although cats also may become ill, this happens only rarely.

Leptospirosis is more common in warm climates with high annual rainfall, but it can occur anywhere, especially after heavy rainfall and flooding. For dogs, the midwestern, eastern, and southwestern regions of the United States are considered hotspots of infection.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

FLEAS FLEAS FLEAS

Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on animal blood. Besides being a nuisance, they can also transmit diseases and cause allergies or anemia. There are more than 2,200 species of fleas recognized worldwide. In North America, only a few species commonly infest house pets. Two common species of flea are the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis). However, most of the fleas found on both dogs and cats are cat fleas. Fleas cause severe irritation in animals and humans. They can also cause anemia (low red blood cells levels) and transmit a wide variety of diseases, including tapeworm infections, bacterial infections, and the typhus-like rickettsiae.

Cat fleas begin reproduction about 1 or 2 days after a blood meal from a host. Female fleas lay eggs as they feed and move about on the surface of the skin. A single female flea can produce up to 50 eggs per day and about 2,000 in her lifetime. The eggs are pearly white, oval, and tiny. They readily fall from the fur and drop onto bedding, carpet, or soil, where they hatch in 1 to 6 days. Newly hatched flea larvae are mobile and free-living, feeding on organic debris found in their environment and on adult flea droppings. Flea larvae avoid direct light and actively move deep into carpet fibers or under organic debris (grass, branches, leaves, or soil).

Larvae can easily dry out, and exposure to relative humidity under 50% will kill them. However, they are capable of moving as far as 3 feet (1 meter) to find locations suitable for their survival. Indoors, flea larvae best survive in the protected environment deep within carpet fibers, in cracks between hardwood floor boards, and on unfinished concrete floors in damp basements. Flea development occurs outdoors only where the ground is shaded and moist. The larval stage usually lasts 5 to 11 days but may be prolonged for 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the availability of food and the environmental conditions.

TICK BITES

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease of dogs, usually carried by the brown dog tick. It first gained attention as a significant disease when military dogs returning from Vietnam during the 1970s were found to be infected. The disease seems to be particularly severe in German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers.

The organism responsible for this disease is a rickettsial organism. Rickettsiae are a specific group or “genus” of bacteria. Ehrlichia canis (E. canis) is the most common rickettsial species involved in ehrlichiosis in dogs, but other strains of the organism will occasionally be found.

Because of its origin in military dogs in Vietnam, it has also been called tracker dog disease and tropical canine pancytopenia.

COUGH COUGH

Kennel cough is a common cause of coughing in dogs—especially in those that have been to the groomer, a boarding facility, or dog parks. Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) or infectious tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Dogs can develop kennel cough approximately two to 14 days after exposure.

Kennel cough in dogs presents as a dry, hacking cough. It may sound like your pup has something stuck in their throat. Some pet parents will describe the cough like a honk, while others say it’s more of a sharp, puffing cough that won’t stop.

Kennel cough can cause mild symptoms in some dogs, but it can progress to life-threatening pneumonia in others. Because of this, it’s important to recognize the symptoms of kennel cough.

A laceration is a wound produced by the tearing of body tissue. Unlike an incision with smooth edges, a laceration is often jagged and irregular. As a result, there can be variable degrees of damage to the underlying body tissue and structures depending on the depth and force of the trauma that caused the laceration. Minor trauma may damage the skin only. Major trauma may damage deeper muscles and tendons, or extend into the abdominal or chest cavities.

The wound created by the laceration is frequently contaminated with debris and bacteria, and all lacerations have the potential for hemorrhage, or infection in cats.
Lacerations associated with the following signs may require emergency treatment:
• Uncontrolled bleeding
• Difficulty breathing
• Weakness
• Inability to stand
• Lameness
• Abnormal mental state

Pyometra is a serious and life-threatening infection in the uterus. The condition must be treated quickly and aggressively.secondary infesction due to hormonal changes in a female's reproductive tract. Following estrus (heat), progesterone levels remain elevated for several weeks, stimulating the uterine lining to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several estrus cycles, the lining increases in thickness until cysts form in the uterus. This condition is called cystic endometrial hyperplasia. The thickened cystic lining secretes fluids, creating an ideal environment where bacteria can grow.
