Rabies is an acute, progressive viral encephalomyelitis that affects carnivores and bats. It is zoonotic (nakakahawa sa tao) and highly transmissible via contact of saliva to tissues (primarily thru bite and scratches as well as contact with open wound).
There are two forms: furious form (“mad-dog syndrome”) and Paralytic form (“dumb form”). Animals with the furious form of rabies becomes irritable, and may viciously and aggressively try to bite. Paralytic form is manifested by ataxia, paralysis of the throat and facial muscles with excessive salivation and inability to swallow.
Unfortunately, there is no cure. Animals with this disease die from progressive paralysis. Since this is a public health problem, animals with suspected rabies are euthanized. Disease confirmation is done thru examination of brain tissue. Those who are exposed should have post exposure prophylaxis.
Although this disease is 100% fatal, it is also 100% preventable. Rabies vaccine is given as early as 3 months old and should be given yearly.
