Skye, a 2-year-old Pomsky, was brought to the clinic for full referral due to head tilting, rolling on one side, nystagmus, loss of balance and crying in pain; all of which recur after the duration of medications given (such as steroids). To determine the cause, CT-Scan was performed and revealed a lesion involving vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII), thus suggesting vestibular disease.
Vestibular disease refers to a sudden, non-progressive disturbance of balance. Treatment may involve steroids, relaxants and topical ear medications. As we know, long term steroid use is not recommended due to high risk of serious side effects. To address Skyeโs case, laser therapy and acupuncture was done. After few sessions, Skye is able to stand and walk without tilting to the left anymore!

Meet our booty-ful patient, Dale, who was brought to the clinic due to swelling on the butt and difficulty urinating. Radiography (XRAY) and ultrasonography showed displacement of the urinary bladder behind the pelvis confirming the presence of โperineal herniaโ.
Perineal hernia occurs when the pelvic diaphragm muscles weaken, leading to protrusion of abdominal organs into the perineal region. Treatment involves surgical repair or โherniorrhaphyโ.

We have learned from our previous post the benefits of spaying and neutring. Spaying your female pets can be a crucial preventive measure to certain diseases such as pyometra and mammary tumor.
Pyometra is a severe infection of the uterus that occurs in intact (unspayed) female pets. Common signs include:
- Vaginal discharge
- Inappetence
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Abdominal distension (enlargement)
- Weakness
This is diagnosed through physical examination, blood tests and imaging esp. ultrasonography (often revealing presence of fluid-filled uterus). The most effective way to treat this condition is surgical removal of the uterus (spaying).

WHO KNEW A DOG COULD TURN INTO A REAL-LIFE BUBBLE WRAP? ๐ซง๐ถ
Our patient, Casper, was brought to the clinic for feeling so airy after a ruff encounter with another dog. His head and neck became enlarged (as if it was swollen) and felt like a bubble wrap crackling when trying to be pressed. No external wounds were seen despite the dog bite. Radiography (XRAY) showed the presence of air trapped beneath the skin suggesting a condition called SUBCUTANEOUS EMPHYSEMA.
Subcutaneous emphysema in a dog can occur as a result of various underlying causes, and a dog bite is one potential cause. When a dog bites, its teeth can puncture a deep layer that contains air (such as the chest or neck) which then causes it to leak and accumulate under the skin. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Our patient here undergone conservative treatment which includes drainage and bandaging of the affected area to compress and prevent further leakage into the area. After 2 weeks, Casper is back to being his true cuddly crackle-free self again!
