Thank You DAS!!!❤️❤️❤️

Today we said goodbye to our visiting vets from Isabela. From left to right, Doc Dianne, Doc Emer, and Doc Erica.

It was Doc Erica who first reached out to us early in 2023 wanting to volunteer to help DAS.
Bearing in mind that she owns her own clinic in Isabela Pet Monarch Small Animal Clinic, this was a huge sacrifice on her part. She also came with her co-owner Doc Myla and another vet who works there Doc Ruth.

They came for two weeks in May then came again in August bringing another 3 vets.

When Erica heard that Doc Gel left suddenly, she literally immediately got on a plane bringing Doc Dianne with her. They stayed for a month. What they did in that month was amazing and saved us an inordinate amount in clinic fees.
This is what they did and what it would cost in a vet clinic (costs are actually minimised)

95 spays and neuters (29 from around shelter hoping to minimize dumping)! 475,000 pesos

4 leg amputations 160,000

1 splenectomy 35000

1 pe**le amputation 40,000
175 rabies vaccinations 26,250

This is without factoring all the treatment and consultations and vaccinations they did for our shelter rescues.
So had we had to do all of this in a moderately priced vet clinic it would have cost a total of 736,250 (13,386 usd).

This is what we can achieve with competent hard working vets at the shelter.

Because we don't have a vet to open the free clinic, Doc Myla and Doc Ruth will come on Jan 14th for a month to start the free clinic.

Doc Emer in the picture came for a few days to help out at the end of the vets stay

We will also be offering low cost spays and neuters at that time.
Please join us in thanking these amazing human beings for all they have done for the dogs and cats of Dumaguete.

If you live around the Isabela area, I cannot recommend these vets highly enough. Pay them a visit at Pet Monarch Small Animal Clinic

Recently, we had a patient whose owner blamed us for her dog’s condition. The dog was brought to the clinic 2 MONTHS AGO and was diagnosed with UTI and blood parasitism, during history checking we also found out that the dog was not vaccinated. The owner bought its medication just enough for ONE WEEK, at that same time they were advised to return for a follow-up check-up. But they DID NOT return and even claimed that the dog at that time, was fine already.

A week ago, the same dog was brought to the clinic with complaints of inappetence, lethargy, anemia and diarrhea.

Upon checking, the dog also manifested clinical signs of DISTEMPER VIRUS. So the dog was tested for confirmation, and its result was POSITIVE.
The owner was informed immediately, was advised with the risks of the virus and were told to take their dog home. The owner, then refused to retrieve their dog and started to give lots of reasons.

Our veterinarian did her best to convince the owner, still the owner refused. Without much choice, our veterinarian dropped the dog off at the owner’s house herself. Finding out that the owner lied about the reasons she kept on telling our vet. Just today, the owner blamed us for the death of her dog. Claiming that we knew her dog was dying that’s why we insist on her taking the dog home.

Distemper Virus is spread through airborne transmission thats why we can’t confine infected dogs inside the clinic.

With this, we want to remind all the pet owners out there that “YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PETS”. Distemper Virus is preventable with the help of vaccination. NEVER BLAME YOUR VETERINARIANS FOR YOUR SHORT-COMINGS AS FUR-PARENTS!

Case of the day!

An 8-year old dog who has just undergone Splenectomy. Prior to this procedure, Lou was diagnosed with Anaplasma and E. Canis. And then she was also diagnosed with splenomegaly via ultrasonography. She was then given medications for the condition, however she did not improve. Hence, she was scheduled for surgery. Just when we think there were no other complications, the procedure also revealed a tumor on the spleen. Luckily, there were no other tumors on her internal organs.

Update on the Mighty Shaun Memorial Free Clinic.

As many of you know, our vet - Doc Gel left suddenly on 8th Nov, which left us without a vet for our free clinic.

Luckily, our volunteer vets from Pet Monarch Small Animal Clinic stepped up yet again to help.
Doc Erica offered to come every other month for the foreseeable future to operate the free clinic. She immediately got on a flight and brought another vet, Doc Dianne with her.

We of course will be paying Doc Erica and covering flights as she has her own clinic in Isabela to run, so this is a big sacrifice on her part.

We still have to finish adjustments at the shelter for the new clinic and also stock up on medications and equipment needed to be able to offer free services.
When people hear the word 'free' clinic sometimes they forget it's not free for us. It takes a huge amount of work to raise funds to cover vets wages, medications and other items needed to run it.

We will need to do a fundraiser before we open to cover the costs of everything as we need stock to be separate from DAS stock. As we always say, we will not compromise the wellbeing of the 185 dogs and cats we have.

We'll open the free clinic in January once everything is in place. In the meantime, while Doc Erica and Dianne are here, we are going to offer low cost spay and neuter for cats and dogs.
The fee will cover the cost of everything and give us a little towards the free clinic.

Surgeries will start Monday, November 21st. We can accommodate 40 dogs and cats.

Costs include aftercare medications.

Female dog spay 2000
Female cat spay 1500
Male dog neuter 1500
Male cat neuter 1000

It's first come first served. Message the Inbox and we will give you a ticket number and details of how to schedule.

Thank you Doc Erica and Dianne for yet again, helping us out.

Case of the day!

Meet Mia, a 10-year old female dacshund with mammary tumor.

Blood tests were conducted as precaution for the procedure since we all know that geriatric patients need to be handled with extra care.

In Addition, to prevent this type of cases in female dogs, veterinarians often suggest spaying.

Case of the day!

Mange is a very common case in cats and dogs. However, this also happens in other animals such as this case. This rabbit was brought to the clinic with complaints that their pet has flakes particularly in its ears.
Physical check-up and skin scrapes were taken. The results confirmed that the rabbit indeed has mange.
This is a reminder to have your pets checked by your respective veterinarians regularly to prevent this cases.

Case of the day!

This dog was brought to the vet due to inappetence and vaginal discharge. Her ultrasound results showed that she has pyometra. Pyometra is condition wherein the uterus becomes filled with pus. This also causes vomiting, fever, bloat, increased thirst and increased urine volume. This happens both in cats and dogs.

If you see the above-mentioned signs present on your pets, have them checked by the vet immediately.

Case of the day!

What could be the most unusual finding in a routine spay?
Tada! Finding a whole skeleton of a kitten in the right uterine horn. Portions of the skeleton penetrated the uterine wall led to finding this out. Prior to discovering this, the veterinarian felt “something sharp” in the uterus. After the spay, curiosity got to the veterinarian and opened the portion with a sharp edge and found this!

Case of the Day!

Have you ever encountered a mammary tumor? Meet Ek-ek, a mixed breed dog brought to the shelter for consultation. However, upon presentation, the dog also has a mammary tumor almost 4 inches of size.

The veterinarians proceeded with the spay first, and then eventually removal of the tumor. Just when things couldn’t get more exciting, the spay also revealed ovarian cysts. And luckily for Ek-ek, the cysts were also removed.

She is now with her owners and is recovering.
