Tetrameriasis is a parasitic infection of poultry caused by a parasitic roundworms, Tetrameres spp. The two main species that affect poultry are T. americana and T. fissispina. These parasites specifically target the proventriculus of their avian hosts. The infection can cause significant damage to the proventriculus through nodule formation that can compress the glands, potentially causing atrophy. Continuous feeding by the worms irritates and inflames the proventricular mucosa. These damages can lead to the accumulation of undigested food in the proventriculus, disrupting the digestive process which affects overall feed utilization of the animal.
Chickens can become infected by ingesting an intermediate host, such as grasshoppers, cockroaches, earthworms, or water fleas which are usually present in dirty houses.
