Xena, a domestic shorthair cat was brought to our practice due to rapid breathing and pale looking gums and nose. Her wonderful caretaker immediately rush her to the Vet for immediate medical intervention. Our Veterinarian in charge diagnosed a life threatening hemolytic anemia and subjected Xena to an emergency blood transfusion. Thankfully, Xena is strong enough to recover from the critical transfusion and looking all well on her next appointment! 🙏

Subcutaneous fluid administration is a very useful way of providing additional fluids to cats and helping to manage and prevent dehydration 🐱🐈⬛
With chronic kidney disease, cats usually produce more urine than usual, and may become dehydrated as they may not drink sufficiently to compensate for the fluid loss. This can make the kidney disease worse, and regular subcutaneous fluid administration can be a valuable management tool for these cats 🩺👩⚕️
Cats can be prone to kidney disease which can eventually turn to renal failure, where the kidneys no longer function properly. In many instances, this diagnosis requires giving your cat injectable fluids to prevent dehydration and to help the kidneys 🙀

Stray Kitten was brought to Manila Feline Center on June 29, 2024, by her rescuer when they saw how sick she got after not eating in front of their house for a day.
During the months of June to July, Stray was treated and is now healthy to find her new home! Just like her adventurous personality, finding her new hoomans will definitely be a journey for her as well.

Temperature and genetics! 🌡️🧬 The darker markings around the eyes, feet and tail are called ‘points’ and can come in different colours like seal, lilac and flame points, for example. These iconic colour points are the result of a genetic mutation, known as the Himalayan gene, which gives these felines temperature-sensitive fur.
When they are born, the kittens are usually pale all over because the womb has kept them at a cat’s normal body temperature. As they grow over the next few weeks and their extremities begin to cool, the gene is activated and the darker colours start to become visible.
The Himalayan gene is also responsible for many of these cats having blue eyes.

Difficulty in giving birth (dystocia) is rare in cats;however, with the progression of selective breeding these problems are becoming more common.
Caesarian operation is the preferred method aside from delivery assistance/ normal delivery. Provided that the cat is neither desperately ill nor very exhausted, cesarian is a safe and routine procedure.
Below is a case of one of our patient, a mother cat that started giving birth last Saturday and still has kittens inside ‘til Sunday. We performed cesarian and spay procedure right away for the mother cat to survive because the longer the kittens are inside her womb, more chance to have her infected. There are still 3 kittens inside, and luckily, 2 survived! 🐱🙀

PYOMETRA Pyometra is the accumulation of pus or "nana" in the uterus due to the influence of hormones and bacterial infection. Certain hormones can cause changes to the uterus that make it favorable for bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, to multiply and cause infection. Vaginal discharge can be observed in cats with the open type pyometra. This can be accompanied by other signs such as lack of appetite, weakness, vomiting among others. The treatment of choice and prevention for this condition is ovariohysterectomy, or spay, or "kapon", which is the surgical removal of the cat's ovaries and uterus. If left untreated, it can lead to sepsis or the spread of infection to other parts of the body, compromising not only the uterus but also the other organs. #manilafelinecenter #felinemedicine #veterinarymedicine

Is my cat pregnant? 🙀🤰 The gold standard for pregnancy diagnosis is abdominal ultrasonography. It is especially helpful in differentiating pregnancy from other causes of uterine distention (eg, hydrometra, pyometra, mucometra). Ultrasonographical measurements can be used to calculate gestational age, it is useful in cases that owner is not certain if the cat is pregnant or not. DID YOU KNOW? Cats are a host to different kinds of mites that can cause excessive scratching, hair loss, crusty skin lesions, head shaking, otitis, and in severe cases dermatitis with secondary bacterial infection. Mites are very small parasites, often microscopic. They are different from ticks, fleas, and lice. Here is an example of a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Case of a "Balloon Kitty" A Siamese cat was presented to us because of acute but severe respiratory distress and coughing. The cat was jaundiced and there are presence of subcutaneous emphysema (air trapped on skin) at the thoracic and abdominal regions. Hemogram revealed severe dehydration, severely low white blood cells and anemia. There were no signs of physical trauma to the subcutaneous tissues but crepitating sound and abdominal distension are palpated around the subcutaneous tissues. Due to unknown history of vaccination, and recent death of household cats, we suspect a viral agent and bronchopneumonia to the affected cat. The cat also tested positive for panleukopenia virus. Unfortunately, the kitty lost its battle in less than 24hrs of hospitalization. Subcutaneous Emphysema results from accumulation of air or other gasses in the subcutaneous tissue due to trauma or soft tissue infection with anaerobic gas forming bacteria. Moreover, spontaneous rupture of lung tissue is a common cause which should be suspected with an animal with generalized SE. It is also associated with Feline Herpesvirus-1. (c) ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Almost everyday we get questions like “what is the best food for my cat?” Is this brand X salty?” 🤔 There are lots of pet food available commercially. Some may come in different price points and true enough, all are formulated based on the needs of a carnivore - your cat. So, is it safe to give whatever brand of cat food to your cat? Every cat age group has a specific nutritional requirement. This is the reason why you should allow a kitten eat 6 to 8 times a day. Let it grow and develop muscles! Things change when they reach their maturity. By this time, you should’ve monitored health issues like urinating patterns and this changes must be reported to your trusted veterinarian. The answer to the above questions is yes but gentle reminder that UTI or FLUTD or lower urinary tract diseases in cats is not solely due to diet or poor cat food quality. There are factors to be considered like stress and genetic predisposition. When genes as cause seems like a dead end, pet owners should understand the cats who are very likely to develop any bladder disease should be subjected to a urinary prescription diet. And perhaps, consider spaying and neutering so that the cats with this hereditary disease will no longer multiply. Sharing with you a clip of our patient who underwent a cystotomy due to recurring episode of hematuria. Struvite bladder stones are rock-like mineral formations that develop in the urinary bladder. Though struvite crystals are a normal finding in urine, at low levels, some cats are highly predisposed in developing one due to genetic factors.
MEI MEI IS AN FIP WARRIOR Sharing with you a clip of Mei Mei's first step to recovery (13th day) She was presented to us with paralysis and a fever of 42 degrees. It was heartbreaking to recall her being recumbent for almost a week, unable to walk and meowing in so much pain. We are so glad to have the most cheering team of vets and assistants who have helped her be a spicy cat again. 😅 Thanks to the wonderful people behind her recovery! It is a hormonally mediated diestrual disorder characterized by cystic endometrial hyperplasia with secondary bacterial infection.
