On April 29, 2007, five children on their way home were suddenly attacked by two Pitbull dogs. A local Jack Russell Terrier domestic dog named George noticed the situation and without hesitation confronted the two dogs and managed to get the children away safely, however, George was seriously injured in the fight and unfortunately this heroic act ended up costing him his life.

Shortly thereafter, the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals awarded him a medal for bravery, making him the first domestic dog (who will not be part of the police force) to receive this recognition.

In the spring of 2007 a statue was placed in his honor and the plaque reads: "In memory of George, who gave his life on Kauae Street on April 29, 2007 protecting children from two wild dogs".
