Kennel Cough

Do You Know Kennel Cough (Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis)

What is it?
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs caused by a mix of bacteria and viruses (most notably Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus).

Symptoms:
• Persistent, dry, hacking cough
• Retching or gagging
• Sneezing and nasal discharge
• Lethargy (in some cases)
• Mild fever
• Loss of appetite (occasionally)

How it spreads:
Spreads quickly in places where many dogs gather — like kennels, shelters, dog parks — through airborne droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces.

Treatment:
Most cases resolve on their own, but veterinary care may include cough suppressants, antibiotics, and isolation from other dogs.

Prevention:
Vaccination against Bordetella and related pathogens is available and recommended, especially for dogs that socialize often.

Wound washing saves lives!

If bitten by a dog 🐶, always seek immediate medical advice.

The wound must be immediately and thoroughly washed for at least 15 minutes with soap and water. Then visit a clinic, as you may need post-exposure vaccination!

Immediate steps to take after a dog bite

1. Wash the wound
- Gently scrub the bite area with soap and clean water for at least 15 minutes
- This helps flush out any virus or dirt

2. Disinfect the wound
- After cleaning, apply alcohol, Dettol, or iodine to kill germs

3. Seek medical help right away
- Go to the nearest hospital or clinic, even if the bite seems small
- Tell the doctor exactly that a dog bit you

Rabies vaccination schedule

- Day 0 (the day of the bite): first rabies vaccine dose
- Day 3: second dose
- Day 7: third dose
- Day 14: fourth dose
- Day 28: fifth dose

Note:
- If the bite is deep or on the face, neck, or hands, you’ll also get a single dose of rabies immunoglobulin on Day 0
- Do not wait or try home remedies—any delay can be dangerous
- Finish all five vaccine doses, even if the wound looks healed
