KOREAN FINED P100,000 and SENTENCED TO 2 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR KILLING AN ASPIN.

Jung Seongho, the Korean responsible for the cruel killing of an Aspin dog named Erika, has been found guilty by the Metropolitan Trial Court (Branch 3), Manila.

This verdict comes after months of legal pursuit, during which PAWS stood by the witnesses, offering unwavering support to ensure Erika’s story was heard. The perpetrator also faced additional charges of Alarm and Scandal, Assault, and Malicious Mischief, filed against him in May 2024.

Erika was a friendly stray who found a home with a community of individuals at a restaurant in Malate, Manila. She brought joy to patrons and became a cherished part of the establishment. On March 9, 2024, Jung stabbed the gentle dog four (4) times using a kitchen knife of the same restaurant where he was dining and which Erika called “home”.

In his decision dated November 12, 2024, Presiding Judge Honorable Peter Steve G. Lim said that the Prosecution was able to prove Jung’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Evidence and eyewitness account showed that Jung charged towards Erika who was not showing any “antagonistic behavior” as she was sitting quietly in the outdoor area of the restaurant. Jung stabbed her “several times causing its (the dog’s) eventual death.”

Thanks to the quick action of witnesses who executed a ‘citizen’s arrest’ and then called authorities right after the stabbing incident, the Jung was immediately arrested and jailed prior to the formal hearings.

Erika’s case underscores the importance of quickly calling law enforcement officers on top of just taking a video of the crime for posting on social media or as evidence.

If you witness any acts of cruelty against animals, please call the police immediately. Law enforcement officers can arrest animal offenders on the spot if they are caught in the act or right after the crime has been committed.

Case: Feline Parvovirus (FPV) / Feline Panleukopenia

Feline Parvovirus (FPV), also known as feline panleukopenia, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cats, particularly kittens. It can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Symptoms to Watch For:
Affected cats may exhibit several symptoms, including severe vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. They may also become lethargic, showing a marked decrease in activity, and experience a loss of appetite, often refusing to eat or drink. Additionally, an elevated temperature is common, indicating the presence of infection.

Transmission:
FPV spreads through direct contact with infected cats or contaminated environments. The virus can survive for long periods in the environment, making it easy for kittens or unvaccinated cats to contract it.

Feline Parvovirus is a serious disease, but with proper vaccination and care, you can protect your beloved feline friends. Stay informed, and don’t hesitate to consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your cat’s health.

This sweet four-month-old baby, Sapphire, came into the clinic showing minimal symptoms. However, laboratory tests revealed that she was suffering from FPV. After a few days of care, she has recovered and is now back to her active self.

Baby Kukay came into the clinic in EMERGENCY STATUS; he was turning blue and could hardly breathe. After several days of confinement and treatment, Baby Kukay is now able to breathe comfortably, although playtime is still limited. He is currently on maintenance medication.

Case: Pyometra

Two furbabies are on their way to recovery! 🐾❤️🐩🐕

Baby Cotton (a referral patient) and Baby Hershey recently had successful surgeries to address pyometra.

Pyometra in dogs is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus, typically occurring in unspayed females. It is classified into two types: OPEN TYPE pyometra, where the cervix is open and pus drains through the va**na, often producing foul-smelling discharge, and CLOSED TYPE PYOMETRA, where the cervix is closed, causing pus to accumulate inside the uterus without any visible discharge. Both types require immediate veterinary attention, often necessitating surgical intervention to remove the infected uterus and ovaries. Recognizing the symptoms early is crucial for a successful outcome.

This condition can be serious, but early detection and prompt veterinary care can make a big difference.

Remember: Spaying your female dog can significantly reduce the risk of pyometra and other health issues.

Case: Chocolate Poisoning ☣🍫🍫☣

Phew, what a close call! 🐶🍫 This little furball, baby Toffee, couldn't resist the temptation and stole chocolate from his human family! 😱

Remember, chocolate can be toxic to dogs; even small amounts can cause serious health problems.

Thankfully, baby Toffee was able to be decontaminated before it was too late.

Dogs can have tumors too!

Fibrosarcomas are aggressive tumors that develop from the abnormal growth of fibroblasts, which are cells located in connective tissues like bone and skin, as well as their surrounding areas.

While not extremely common in dogs, fibrosarcomas rank as the third most frequent type of bone tumor in canines. In contrast, these tumors are more widespread in cats, where fibrosarcomas are identified as the most prevalent tumor type.

In dogs, fibrosarcomas typically originate from the skin, subcutaneous fat, and nearby tissues. They are most often located in the trunk, limbs, skull, and jaw.

Despite their aggressive nature, most canine fibrosarcomas are primarily locally invasive. However, approximately ten percent do metastasize to distant sites.

Some dog breeds show a higher incidence of this disease, suggesting a potential genetic link, although the specific inheritance pattern remains unclear.
