Femoral head ostectomy (FHO) is a surgical procedure commonly performed in dogs with certain hip joint problems, including femoral head fractures, hip dysplasia, or severe hip osteoarthritis. During an FHO surgery, the veterinarian removes the ball-shaped head of the femur bone, which is damaged or causing pain, and this eliminates the painful bone-on-bone contact within the hip joint. After the surgery, dogs typically go through a period of rehabilitation and physical therapy to help them regain mobility and strength. FHO surgery is often recommended for smaller dogs or those with certain medical conditions that make other hip surgeries less suitable. It's important to consult with a veterinarian who can assess your dog's specific condition and discuss whether FHO surgery is the best treatment option. Post-operative care and rehabilitation play a crucial role in the dog's recovery and long-term quality of life.
