The Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) is renowned for its distinctive vertical orange bands and long, narrow snout, which it uses to extract food from tight crevices. There are over 120 species of butterflyfish, but the Copperband is particularly popular in the hobby for its unique appearance and reputation as a natural predator of nuisance aiptasia anemones!

๐ŸŒ ๐‡๐จ๐ฆ๐ž ๐’๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ญ ๐‘๐ž๐ž๐Ÿ:
Native to the tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Copperband Butterflyfish is often found among rocky coral reefs, lagoon flats, and estuaries. It thrives in environments with abundant rock formations, where it can use its elongated snout to reach small crustaceans and worms hidden within crevices.

Growing up to about 8 inches in length, the Copperband Butterflyfish is a medium-sized fish that needs ample space to swim and explore. Its bold coloration and elegant swimming style make it a captivating addition to any tank.

Copperband Butterflyfish do best in tanks of at least 125 gallons, with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. They are known to be shy and may take time to acclimate to captivity. Theyโ€™re generally reef-safe with caution, as they may nip at small invertebrates, tube worms, and feather dusters.

The Copperband Butterflyfish is considered moderately hardy but can be challenging to feed initially. Itโ€™s essential to provide a stable, mature tank environment with pristine water conditions. They are sensitive to fluctuations in water quality, making them best suited for experienced aquarists.

๐Ÿฆ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ž๐ญ:
In the wild, these butterflyfish feed on small invertebrates, worms, and coral polyps. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes live blackworms, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped clams. Once acclimated, they may also accept frozen foods, but consistent feeding is crucial to maintaining their health.

Copperband Butterflyfish are generally peaceful but can become territorial toward similar species. They are best housed with other peaceful, non-aggressive tank mates, like tangs, gobies, and blennies. Itโ€™s advisable to introduce them as one of the earlier additions to avoid stress from established tank mates.

Have you kept a Copperband Butterflyfish in your reef tank? Share your experiences, care tips, and photos of this beautiful fish. Letโ€™s talk about its unique behavior, challenges, and role in keeping aiptasia under control!

How We Began

The Glass Reef began as a group-buy and open-source, DIY avenue for Pinoy Reefers and PMALS members as early as 2006 and later on by PMRAS members around 2013. The Glass Reef finally became a brand in February 2013 and in June 2016, became a physical and online supplier of affordable, good quality, locally-produced aquarium supplies for both freshwater and marine aquarium hobbyists. Our goal is to provide the local hobbyists economical, reliable and effective products. All TGR products are consistent in quality and are batch tested everytime. We pride ourselves in providing cost-efficient items that help in the advancement of the aquarium hobby here in the Philippines.

Our products are 100% sourced and produced locally - from raw materials to packaging. We also strive to support small local suppliers and businesses.

The Glass Reef is a proud supporter of Philippine Marine and Reef Aquarium Society, Philsalt Classifieds, Arowana Owners Club of the Philippines, Community Tank Owners and Fish Talk Philippines. We are one with PMRAS in promoting sustainable and responsible pet ownership and reefkeeping.
