PeritoneoPericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia (PPDH) in a Mini Schnauzer puppy.

Otis, a 7-month old, male, Miniature Schnauzer, with chronic tachypnea or increased respiratory rate and occasional vomiting; was brought to the clinic as an emergency case. Xray showed severely enlarged cardiac silhouette. Imaging studies suggestive of Peritoneopericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia (PPDH).

PPDH is a congenital defect in the diaphragm, which allows direct communication between the pericardium and the peritoneum. Abdominal organs may herniate into the pericardial space.

In this particular case, most of Otis' liver lobes are in the pericardium. Surgery was done to repair remove the liver from the pericardial sac, return it to the abdominal cavity and close the hernia.

Otis recovered well, and now living a much comfortable and happy life =)

Malar Abscess in a Cat

Booboo, a 5 year-old, male, Persian was initially presented with swelling of the right facial region. Patient is FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) positive, with suspected congenital heart disease as seen in echocardiography, and also developed transient elevation of kidney enzymes.

Swelling subsides with antibiotic treatment but recurs immediately after. Dental surgery was decided and xray showed tooth root abscess from the 4th right upper premolar (108). Abscess has spread to the zygomatic (malar) bone and caused the facial swelling. Affected tooth and adjacent teeth were extracted.

Booboo hasn't had any recurrence of facial swelling eversince; and for sure, is much happier and comfortable now.
