Meet furrbaby "mutya" diagnosed with pyometra case. And now recovering.... 🤗

"Pyometra" is a secondary infection that occurs as a result of hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract. Following estrus (heat), the hormone progesterone remains elevated for up to two months and causes the lining of the uterus to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several consecutive estrus cycles, the uterine lining continues to increase in thickness until cysts form within the uterine tissues (a condition called cystic endometrial hyperplasia). The thickened, cystic lining secretes fluids that create an ideal environment for bacterial growth.

When does pyometra occur?
Pyometra may occur in any sexually intact young to middle-aged dog; however, it is most common in older dogs. And two to eight weeks after the last estrus.

What are the clinical signs of pyometra?
-If it is open, pus will drain from the uterus through the va**na to the outside.
-Pus or an abnormal discharge is often seen on the skin or hair under the tail or on bedding and furniture where the dog has recently laid.
-Fever, lethargy, anorexia, and depression may or may not be present.
- Polydypsia &polyuria(Increased water consumption and urination may occur)
-Dogs with closed pyometra become severely ill very rapidly. They are anorectic, very listless and very depressed. Vomiting or diarrhea may also be present.

How is pyometra diagnosed?
-Dogs that are examined early in the course of the disease may have a slight va**nal discharge and show no other signs of illness.
- A very ill female dog with a history of recent heat that is drinking an increased amount of water should be suspected of having pyometra.
- there is a va**nal discharge or a painful, enlarged abdomen.

How is pyometra treated?
- The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the infected uterus and ovaries by performing an ovariohysterectomy (spay).

Understanding Dogs and Chocolate: Is It Harmful?

Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains theobromine and to a lesser extent, caffeine. Humans metabolize theobromine easily, but dogs don't. Dogs process theobromine and caffeine slowly, which allows these toxic compounds to build up in their systems and cause clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicity.

What Happens if a Dog Eats Chocolate?

It depends on your dog's size and how much chocolate they've consumed. If you have a medium or large dog who consumes only a small amount of chocolate, then you may only notice signs associated with an upset stomach, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

But if your dog consumes a large amount of chocolate or if you have a small dog who consumes chocolate, then they may develop the following signs of chocolate toxicity:

✔️Tremors
✔️Irregular heart rate
✔️Heart attack
✔️Internal bleeding
