Microfilaria (larva of heartworm) under the microscope 🔬🪱
(blood sample from a dog)
Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) are intravascular parasite that reside in the heart and pulmonary arteries which commonly affects dogs and occasionally reported in cats.
These worms are different from worms that we often see in their poop. These worms are being transmitted from one animal to another through mosquito bite. It takes several months before signs will occur, the time when worms are already mature. Signs and symptoms will only show once the disease is advanced.
Common symptoms include weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, difficulty in breathing, coughing, hemoptysis (coughing with blood), syncope or collapse, weight loss, discolored urine, ascites and more. They can cause permanent heart failure and other organ damage.
Imagine how small they are initially and how can they affect their health significantly if left untreated.
Laboratory tests are available to diagnose Heartworm. Treatment protocol is available as well. BUT PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE!
