1. There is no vaccine yet for tick-borne and mosquito-borne diseases in dogs and cats unlike distemper and parvovirus that pet owners are usually aware of. So the only way to protect them is by giving them monthly or quarterly preventives (depending on products you used), religiously.
2. External parasites are everywhere. Not because you dont see them that does not mean they arenโt present or your pet was not bitten. Ticks, for example, would need to feed 3 times (it could be on the same dog or different dog). They do not permanently live on your dogs. They move out and hide elsewhere when laying eggs or hibernating. Ticks and fleas are so small it can fit on small cracks on your wall or floor. It can hide on your furniture, in your garden, and even in your own bed. Have you seen the recent episode of KMJS wherein 2 adult female ticks were removed from the ear canal of a kid?
3. Parasites come in different form and sizes (ticks, fleas, louse, mites). Not all parasites are visible to the naked eye. Mites and larvae stages of fleas and heartworm are so small you canโt see them. The vet would use microscope to demonstrate the presence of these parasites.
4. Blood parasitism is not evident or obvious until nothing is left with your dogโs blood. A single bite from infected tick or mosquito can transmit the diseases that can only be clinically obvious after couple of months. So even they are no longer there, your dog could be incubating the diseases already. Severe anemia and depletion of platelets are the most common blood findings. If not treated immediately, it can also cause damages to the liver and kidney.
5. Treatment of infection caused by parasites is very very expensive. A standard complete treatment for heartworm infection ranges from Php15000- 25,000, depending on the weight of your animal and where you brought them (private clinics have different prices for heartworm medicines). Blood transfusion ranges from Php 3500-8000, that doesnโt include yet all the laboratory tests, hospitalization costs and take-home medications.
Fortunately, commercially available products can be used to prevent and/or treat two or more species of parasites. for preventives and give them religiously.
