Malacatmon
Having survived one of the driest seasons so far, our young Malakatmon trees (ππͺπππ¦π―πͺπ’ ππΆπ»π°π―πͺπ¦π―π΄πͺπ΄) are back to blooming their hearts out!
This close-up view of the short-lived flowers show the lovely crown-shaped flower center which, together with the lively yellow petals, attracts pollinators. While the petals fall off after a day, successful pollination leads to the development of a round fruit. When ripe, the pink fruit bursts open to reveal bright scarlet seeds - the start of a new generation of this beautiful tree.
The Malakatmon is endemic to Luzon and Palawan, but is classified as vulnerable in the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Plants (DAO 2017-11). We are happy to have this small space dedicated to their growth and care in the Arboretum of Threatened Philippine Trees. From the few individuals we have, we continue to propagate and share this beautiful native tree with others.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024, especially the graduates of the JGSOM, GBSEALD, and SOH, who are celebrating their commencement rites today! We hope that you go out into the world, wherever life takes you, with the fresh hope and enthusiasm of youth. We wish you the very best!
