Feline panleukopenia (also called feline distemper) is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease of cats caused by the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV, also called feline parvovirus). Kittens are most severely affected.

Despite the names used to describe feline panleukopenia, the disease is not to be confused with canine distemper or canine parvovirus infection, which are caused by different viruses.

What are the signs of feline panleukopenia?
Most cats with FPV infection have no signs at all and appear normal. Cats that do become ill—most often those younger than a year old—may have the following:

Diarrhea
Vomiting
Fever
Depression/lethargy
Loss of appetite
Dehydration (may appear as sunken eyes or dry gums)
Painful belly

Canine distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by the canine distemper virus. The virus attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs. 😰

All dogs are at risk of canine distemper. Those at particular risk include puppies younger than four months and dogs that have not been vaccinated against canine distemper virus.🤢

How is canine distemper spread?🤔
Puppies and dogs most often become infected through airborne exposure to the virus from an infected dog or wild animal. This may occur through sneezing, coughing, or barking.
The virus also can be transmitted through shared food and water bowls and other items.
Once infected, dogs shed the virus in body fluids like respiratory droplets, saliva, or urine, and may be contagious for several months. Infected mother dogs can pass the virus to their unborn puppies.

Sushi a Mini Pinscher brought to our clinic last night December 29, 2024 @ 6:50pm for an Emergency Cesarian Section due to dystocia.

She had 4 puppies but unfortunately, one died (hydro puppy). 😢

What is Hydro puppy? 🤔
Hydro puppy or water puppy in dog terms refers to a puppy born with a condition called "anasarca", where the puppy has excessive fluid buildup under the skin, causing significant swelling, making them appear like they are filled with water.

Medical Term: Anasarca

Cause:
The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is believe to be related to genetic factors and may aggravated by issues during pregnancy.
