Why Hearing “We Weren’t Able To…” From Your Veterinarian Is Actually a Green Flag

Veterinarians, assitants & groomers care deeply about your pets, and part of that care is being honest about what happens in the clinic. When we say, “We weren’t able to…”, it’s not a sign of failure—it’s a reflection of our commitment to transparency, learning, clear communication, and genuine care for your pet.

Here’s why this phrase is actually a green flag, with examples from real-life clinic situations:

1️⃣ Honesty and Transparency

We want to keep you informed, even when things don’t go as expected.

Example:
“We weren’t able to get a clear ultrasound image of your pet’s abdomen because they were too anxious to stay still during the procedure.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: Instead of giving you incomplete or inaccurate results, your vet is upfront about the challenge and may suggest other alternative diagnostic tools to get accurate results.

2️⃣ Commitment to Learning and Improvement

Acknowledging limitations shows that we’re always striving to do better.

Example:
“We weren’t able to diagnose the exact cause of your pet’s persistent and/progressive paralysis after the initial tests, but we are consulting with a specialist for further insights.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: This shows your vet recognizes the complexity of the case and values collaboration and continuous learning to provide the best care for your pet.

3️⃣ Clear Communication

Being honest about what couldn’t be done ensures you’re fully informed.

Example:
“We weren’t able to remove all the tartar during your dog’s dental cleaning because of the condition of their teeth, but here’s what we’ll do during the next session.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: Your vet is being transparent about the treatment process, helping you set realistic expectations while prioritizing your pet’s comfort and safety.

4️⃣ Genuine Care for Your Pet

Sometimes, outcomes are beyond our control, but we always prioritize what’s best for your pet.

Example:
“We weren’t able to save your cat’s eye due to the extent of the infection, but the enucleation surgery went well, and they are on their way to a pain-free recovery.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: Your vet’s focus on your pet’s well-being and quality of life demonstrates their compassion and dedication to providing the best possible outcome, even in difficult situations.

5️⃣ Knowing When to Refer for Specialized Care

There are times when the best option for your pet is to refer them to a specialist for further treatment.

Example:
A client brought in their dog with a bone lodged in the esophagus. We examined the dog and determined that trying to remove the bone ourselves could cause serious damage to the esophagus, so we suggested referring the pet to a specialist. The client later visited another vet, who successfully removed the bone. However, the client expressed frustration, saying, “You didn’t know what you were doing.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: Our decision to refer was based on the potential risks of trying to perform the procedure ourselves. While the other vet was able to successfully remove the bone, our priority was to ensure the dog’s safety by making the right decision, even if that meant referring them for specialized care.

6️⃣ Being Honest in Grooming Situations

As groomers, we always aim to provide a great grooming experience, but sometimes a certain style might not be suitable for your pet’s condition.

Example:
“We weren’t able to give Coco a bear cut today due to the deep tangles in his coat. Detangling could cause him unnecessary stress, but we can suggest a different cut that’s more suitable for his condition.”
🐾 Why this is a green flag: Rather than forcing a grooming style that could cause discomfort or stress, we are honest about what’s best for Coco’s well-being and offer alternative options that are more appropriate for his coat condition.

Why This Matters to You
Hearing “We weren’t able to…” might feel discouraging at first, but it’s actually a sign of a trustworthy veterinarian who prioritizes honesty, continuous learning, and your pet’s well-being above all else.

Your pet deserves the best care, and we are here to provide it—with transparency and integrity every step of the way.

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are common parasites in cats, causing intense itching, head shaking, and a dark, coffee-ground-like discharge in the ears. Symptoms include redness, inflammation, and occasionally a foul odor. They live in the ear canal causing significant irritation & discomfort. They are highly contagious and can spread quickly between pets in close contact.

Untreated infestations can lead to secondary infections, so prompt veterinary care is essential. 🐱

This is one of the many cases where a bone was lodged in a dog’s trachea, causing respiratory distress. 😔 Immediate intervention was required to safely remove the obstruction. 🙏🐾🐶 The procedure was successful, and the dog has now fully recovered. We’re grateful for the positive outcome and the dog’s quick recovery. 🙏

This is a call to furrents to please be cautious to prevent accidents like this. Avoid giving your dogs bones, especially small or sharp ones, as they can become lodged in the throat or trachea, causing choking or serious respiratory issues. 😧 Be mindful of throwing bones or sharp objects in areas where dogs are present. Pet-proof your surroundings by properly disposing of hazardous items and keeping them out of reach.
Let’s keep our furry friends safe. 🐶🐾🙏🥰

Weathering today’s turbulence while getting things done! 👩‍⚕️

An exploratory laparotomy (opening the abdomen to check & find the cause of a problem that isn’t clear on xray or scans) was performed on a 2-year-old Labrador named Bugan from Ifugao, presenting with melena (black tarry p**p) for 3 weeks. Despite ongoing antibiotic treatment, no improvement had been observed. The owners suspected the dog might have ingested a bone. Radiographs showed an unclear, unidentifiable object, prompting us to proceed with surgery for further investigation.

It was discovered that Bugan had a mesenteric torsion (twisting of intestine around itself) along with an abnormal attachment to the proximal parts of her small intestine, which caused inflammation and bleeding. The issue has been corrected, and she is now on her way to recovery.

Thank you for trusting Vet Tag Animal Clinic and Grooming Center 🙏🐾🐶

This intact male dog was presented to the clinic with swelling near the a**s on both sides, has difficulty defecating or is often constipated, and has visible sign of pain/discomfort as he is straining in a tail-tucked posture. Upon proper assesment, he was diagnosed with bilateral perineal hernia. Surgical repair, castration & medical management were then carried out.

Bilateral perineal hernia in dogs is usually caused by a combination of factors. Older, unneutered male dogs are at higher risk because male hormones can weaken the pelvic muscles over time. Aging itself also naturally reduces muscle strength, which increases susceptibility. Additionally, dogs that frequently strain to p**p or pee—due to constipation, diarrhea, or an enlarged prostate—put extra pressure on these muscles, contributing to hernias. Certain breeds are more prone to this condition due to their body structure, and sometimes nerve issues in the pelvic area can also weaken these muscles, leading to hernias.

This is a female dog presented with advanced pyometra, showing signs that could have progressed to sepsis if immediate/emergency surgery was not performed. Despite the severity of her condition, she displayed remarkable resilience post-operation, showing rapid signs of recovery. Within just a few days, she regained her appetite and displayed an overall improvement in activity level. 🐾 🐶

Pyometra is a serious infection in female dogs where their uterus (the organ that holds puppies during pregnancy) fills up with pus. This usually happens because of hormone changes and can occur in older dogs who haven’t been spayed (had their uterus and ovaries removed) and/or haven’t been pregnant.

When a dog has pyometra, bacteria can grow in her uterus, causing swelling, pain, and infection. If left untreated, the infection can spread into her bloodstream, leading to a dangerous condition called sepsis, which can be life-threatening.

Common signs of pyometra include tiredness, not wanting to eat, drinking a lot of water, vomiting, and sometimes a smelly discharge from her v***a (ge***al area). It’s an emergency, so prompt surgery to remove the infected uterus is usually needed to save the dog’s life.

ABDOMINOCENTESIS IN A DOG WITH ASCITES DUE TO BLOOD PARASITISM & LIVER PROBLEM COMPLICATIONS

Abdominocentesis in dogs is a medical procedure that involves using a needle or catheter to puncture the abdominal wall to collect or drain fluid from the abdomen. This procedure is primarily done for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, especially in cases where the dog has ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen).

Ascites, or abdominal fluid accumulation, in dogs can arise as a complication of tick-borne diseases like ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis, which affect multiple organs and lead to systemic inflammation and liver involvement.

Healing beyond the clinic: A veterinarian’s plea for wildlife conservation & protection. 🙏

This owl was rescued & brought in by NEWT for xray after it was found unable to flap its left wing, suspected to be due to an airgun injury. 🦉

As veterinarians, we have witnessed the impact of human actions on wildlife firsthand. Each injured animal that comes under our care is a reminder of the delicate balance we share with nature. This for example, an owl wounded by human recklessness, underscores a harsh truth—our actions have profound effects on the creatures we share this planet with.

As veterinarians, we are committed to healing the injured and the vulnerable. But true healing comes when we address the root causes of wildlife’s silent suffering. Let’s all be advocates for these voiceless creatures and ensure a future where wildlife thrives in harmony with us.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s pledge to protect, conserve, and cherish our wildlife—before it’s too late.
