Successfully operated on the biggest pyometra I have yet encountered, weighing 2.5kg of pure pus and blood in a 2 yr old Doberman with underlying kidney disease and a very low platelet count, meow 🙀🙀🙀

RISK OF ANESTHETICs!!

It happened a year ago after a very long vacation leave. One of our junior vets had a case of dystocia (difficulty in delivering babies). Necessary efforts were done to help the mom to have a normal delivery. Unfortunately, mama dog couldn't pass out the baby. Caesarian Section was recommended. Owner agreed. Pre-operative test was to make sure the safety of both mama dog and baby. Blood results was done and results came out normal.

The HORROR begun when the general Anesthetic was given, the patient started having rash on her skin and had hoarsely breathing. It was immediately reversed and emergency medication was given. Surgery was postponed! Round the clock care was done to make sure the puppy is still alive.

And this is the part where i came in..the attending Veterinarian consulted me about the case and we decided to use a different anesthetic. Luckily i was trained to handle different types of anesthetics. We requested to our pharmacy a different anesthetic and scheduled the second try of surgery right away.

HOORAY she made it through surgery!

Not all dogs can tolerate certain drugs such as anesthetics, vaccines or antibiotics. It is important to inform the clients on the risks in every procedure that we do and make sure they understand it very well.

Not all routine procedures have good outcomes! Even the simplest surgery can be life threatening. I encountered 3 cases with the same case as Mama dog, the 2 other cases was a routine Spay. As always! Doc Yael was there to the rescue!! 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♂️🦸‍♂️
