POL-AN ( handle)
One of the crucial aspect of bladesmithing is the placing of the newly finished blade with handles. The angle must be done right. There should be full concentration otherwise the heated steel will swerve either ways. Solid carabao horn handles, the one we mostly use, are super sturdy, thus, one crucial error and we have to repeat the process all over again.
Here, we are doing the handle of the Pinalingkod blade. In practice, smaller knives are more cumbersome to put handles compared to the bigger utility blades.

Bohol Blades Mini Cleaver
This is for the renowned chef Cocoy Ventura of Santiago City, Isabela, Luzon Phils.
Bestseller Panakin EDC
So many wanted to own one of these EDCs. Panakin comes from the Visayan word 'takin' meaning to carry.
Farmers love to tuck this on their waists because it's lighter but can cut tree branches and practically slices everything their is to it.
The handle is made 5" solid carabao horn, pinned with bronze nail, carved with Vestorio style plus the ferrule is brass. The sheath is the rare natural-colored balayong hardwood with aluminum pins and the rope holder is made from carabao horn also.
Quenching is oil with a dash of water for sturdiness, the grind is either lefthanded or righthanded, chisel grind style. Forged using 5160 steel leaf spring primary because primary leaf springs are, for us, the most apt to use for forging.
The sharpening process is done 5 times using many natural whetstones sourced abroad and locally.

SUBO : Bohol Blades Way
Only a handful of blacksmiths in our province use oil for their subo or heat treatment. Most of them prefer water.
We, at Bohol Blades Blacksmithing Phils, always pride ourselves with our oil quenching method, creating our very own 'subo', for which we are so known for.
We use oil because we can predict the outcome given the unpredictable daily temperatures we have in our place. Then, we rub the newly quenched steel into a special combination of soil, limestone, ash and a dash of goats dung, thereby ensuring 'subo' retention.
We use coconut charcoal to give us that consistent heat unlike that of hardwood charcoal which is of less heat. In that way we don't have to cut those endangered hardwood trees like molave.
We give these newly quenched steel an hour or or so before we smooth grind them. That way, heat is evenly tempered and cooled off.
Our shop is open to the public from Wed to Saturday 9am to 4pm. No entrance fee is required. Anybody can observe, watch and learn quality blacksmithing doned the Boholano way. This is our commitment to all, thereby perpetuating our town's (Sikatuna Bohol) legacy and preserving Philippine local traditions.
NB: Please message us in advance should you decide to visit. The road going to our place is not very friendly as of this time. Some like it that way, some don't. If you do want to come and visit, please message us in advance / call (+63) 09212326028.

This is how we oil quench our Kukri.
It takes experience to get the hang if the steel has just the right glow for it to be dipped into the oil.
Then we rub it into the limestone soil combined with ash and dash of goats dung so the hamon will really come out.
We use coconut charcoal as its heat is superb and consistent. We've been using coconut charcoal since time immemorial.
