ENGLISH BULLDOG BREED STANDARD - Part 1
Part of our advocacy is to help improve the breed standard, especially here in our country. There's just too many irresponsible breeders. They range from being ignorant to being selfish. It takes special care and a lot of understanding to appreciate the breed and everything that comes with it - by that I mean the breed is predisposed to a lot of medical conditions, such as but not limited to: 1) skin/coat sensitivity; 2) hip dysplasia/fracture; 3) respiratory issues due to its anatomically imperfect nasal structure; and one of the more common occurring condition here in the Philippines, cherry eyes. All these conditions, together with a dozen more, contribute to the relatively shorter lifespan of a bully, which is about 10 years.
While we try our very best to find the perfect DNA for our bullies, we are of course limited to several factors such as: 1) Availability of the blood line; 2) Price of stud; 3) Price of puppies. With regard to the availability of best blood lines, there are several kennels that are worthy of praise due to their great practice of breeding. However, the stud fee of their near-perfect studs is not cheap. Not at all. But keep in mind that you are paying for the blood line. The same is true if purchasing a puppy from these respectable kennels. In fact, the puppies they breed come way much expensive that the stud price. But then again, you'll be getting a puppy from two top bullies in their kennel instead of just from the stud. I would like to emphasize that whether one is getting a puppy for pet or show or breed, the breed standard must always be the top consideration. Looking for a cheap puppy will not only cause the deterioration of the breed standard, but the public will tend to be misinformed about the breed standard.
In our small kennel, we strive to commit to our advocacy of improving the breed standard by responsibly producing quality puppies. We are not perfect. We made mistakes. We will make mistakes. But it is our intention to become one of the more respectable kennels, and so it is incumbent for us to learn from those experiences, and learn more about the breed from the experts. To borrow a line from someone I forgot (I'm sorry), the most expensive puppy is a cheap puppy.
We encourage everyone to be responsible pet owners. The first step is to admit how much you know and should know.
Have a nice day everyone! :)
