Fun Rabbit Breed Facts

Enjoy a few fun facts about rabbit breeds, as recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

Rabbit breeds with the most color varieties include Angoras (English, French, Satin), Holland Lop, Jersey Wooly, Lops (English, French, Mini), Mini Rex, and Netherland Dwarf.

Rabbit breeds are classified into five body types: full arch, semi-arch, compact, commercial, cylindrical.

The only rabbit breed to have the cylindrical body type is the Himalayan.

The rabbit with the longest ears is the English Lop.

Besides the normal rabbit fur type, there are also rex (very plush), satin (somewhat transparent, which adds a sheen) and wooly.

Only two breeds of rabbit have rex fur: the Rex and the Mini Rex.

Rabbit breeds that have wooly fur are the American Fuzzy Lop, Angoras (English, French, Giant, Satin), and Jersey Wooly.

The rabbit breed that mixes wooly fur and normal fur is the Lionhead.

Our tip for today is an obvious one: bunnies should be housed indoors (not outdoors, even in a barn or shed). We list some very good rea*ons below. We feel this is a very important topic, and is often a source of misinformation. This post is not meant to shame anyone, only to educate. Please consider bringing your bunnies indoors if you are currently housing them outdoors or in a shed or barn.

1. Parasites - The most overlooked rea*on is parasites. Alabama and the southern United States in general is plagued by wolf worm (botfly), and many other parasites. These worms start out tiny but are life threatening for many rea*ons. An outdoor shed will not protect a rabbit from these parasites; rabbits must be indoors to avoid them.

2. Heat - Please don’t subject your rabbit to this. It’s summer in Alabama. Rabbits do not deal with heat well; a rabbit can easily die of heatstroke. If it’s hot to you, it’s unbearable to them. Please see the recent post by Alabama Rabbit Rescue, in which a rabbit was rescued from cruel outdoor conditions from which her sister perished.

3. Cold - While rabbits tolerate the cold far better than heat, 40 degrees is cold to them. Please don’t subject your rabbit to this.

4. Predators - Hawks, coyotes, owls, and snakes are rampant in north Alabama, but even neighboring pets with high prey drives are all a risk. Please also consider raccoons in our area of Alabama.

5. Attention & love - Outdoors, a bunny is out of sight and out of mind. Indoors, they can be part of the family. How can you get to know and enjoy your rabbit’s company if they are not in your company?

6. Cleanliness - It is far more difficult to keep an outdoor cage clean than an indoor exercise pen. You are also more likely to keep the space clean indoors than outdoors. Please remember that wire bottom cages deform rabbit feet over time. Please do not use these for your rabbit!

7. Housing generalities: most outdoor housing is geared towards cages, with wire bottoms (bad, see above!). Avoid wire bottoms and cages in general unless your bunny uses a crate overnight. X-pens are great indoors!

8. Sounds, smells, and outdoor exposures - Consider the outdoor exposures that you don’t have to endure, but would be asking a domestic rabbit to deal with: loud sounds, smells (rabbits sense of smell is MUCH stronger than humans!) Imagine being outside with nowhere to go when a skunk recently had sprayed near your home, or during the recent 4th of July fireworks without understanding. Please consider that rabbits can die from stress.

9. Health awareness & general loneliness - When you are able to see and interact with your rabbit daily, you are much more likely to notice changes in behavior, health concerns, signs of GI stasis, and also much more likely to get to know your rabbit’s personality! Please remember, as with all pets and family, they won’t be with us forever, you must enjoy the time you have with them.

PAANO MAGBREED NG RABBIT? 🐰

- Ang doe dapat nasa 6 mos and up na ang age. Pinakabata na ang 5 mos, Pero mas maganda and advisable Ang 6 mos, dahil ito na ang Adult stage nila.

- Sa Buck Naman, 4 mos and up, Basta pag meron ng itlog Ang buck. Pwede na ito makabuntis ng doe.

- Pwede niyo ring icheck Ang Private Part ng doe, pag nakita niyo itong Pinkish, redish, purple. Parang namamaga, ibigsabihin fertile, pwede na ipasampa Ang buck.

- Bago dapat pasampahan Yung doe, Nicheck muna at nilista Ang Timbang ah.

- Pag magpapakasta, Idadala Yung doe don sa cage or lagayan ng buck. Masyadong territorial mga doe, aawayin Lang Yung buck Kung buck Ang ilalagay sa lugar nila.

- Pag kinakastahan na, dapat maka 3-5 na bagsak ang buck para sure na mabubuntis Yung doe.

⚠️ Huwag kalimutan ilista Yung araw na pinakastahan Yung doe. ⚠️

Para macheck Kung successful Yung mating. ✅

Dapat pagkalipas ng ilang araw, may nagbago sa behavior ng doe.

1. Kagaya ng pag hahawakan, humuhuni.

2. Masungit.

3. Laging naghuhukay.

4.laging gutom or mas maraming kinakain sa usual niya.

5. Pag lalapitan ng buck, aawayin niya.

6. Naglalagas balahibo

- Timbangin ulit Yung doe, pag mas mabigat siya kesa sa unang timbang niya. Baka possible na buntis na nga.

~ Palpating - Ito Yung paghawak sa may bandang tiyan ng doe. Dahan dahan Lang yon, Parang Basta nilagay mo Lang. Baka mapaano kits pag nidiinan. Dat may mararamdaman kayong bilog bilog or gumagalaw sa loob ng tiyan ng doe (galaw ng kits)

- Pag naconfirm na buntis Yung doe. Wait gang sa mag 28-35 days, manganganak na Yan. 1 week before dapat manganak, maghanda na ng nest box. Parang basket na maliit, kailangan may butas butas yon para may lusutan ng wiwi. Medyo malaki dapat, Yung magkakasya doe para pag magpapadede di maipit or maapakan mga kits.

- Pag gumawa na ng nest ang doe at nagbunot na ng fur. Malapit na manganak Yan.

- Huwag masyado tignan o icheck Ang doe kapag malapit na manganak or nanganganak. Naiistress Kasi sila. Huwag din gambalain dahil baka himbis na manganak na eh di ituloy. Pagbigyan doe ng privacy.

- Pagkabalik niyo at nakitang may kits na, icheck Kung nasa nestbox ba nanganak. Kung di, Pwedeng itransfer Ang mga kits pero kailangan hawak muna sa doe bago hawak sa kits para di magbago amoy. (For breeders Lang Ito or di sila kinikilalang amo ng Rabbit)

- Pwede Naman hawakan kits Basta kinikilala Kang Amo or kilala ka ng doe. Okay Lang sa kanila pakelaman mo anak nila, Base sa research. Myth Lang na kakainin nila anak nila dahil hinawakan Lang ng Tao. Kakainin nila ang anak or aabandonin kapag nastress sila.

- Bigyan Ang doe ng mas maraming food sa usual niya, and more malunggay para makapag produce siya marami milk para sa kits. Also unli water

- Tuwing Gabi or madaling araw magpapadede Ang doe Kaya huwag na magtaka Kung bat Parang tingin niyo eh di pinapadede. Di sila kagaya ng pusa at a*o na madalas natin nakikita natin na nagpapadede ng anak.

- Ang mga Rabbit once or twice a day Lang magpadede, 3-5 mins Lang.

- Ma-aari mo Lang gawin, Icheck Ang mga kits Kung nakadede silang lahat.

- Pag malaki at may color white sa tiyan ng kits, nakadede yan. Pero pag payat tas kulubot Yung balat, di nakadede.

- Pag may di nakadede sa kanila, maaaring iforcefeed sa doe. Pwede habang kumakain Yung doe, ilagay sa may ilalim niya at tulungan dumede Yung kit. Pwede ring hawakan Yung doe at padedein Yung kit.

- Pag walang gatas Ang doe, namatay or nagkasakit. Pwedeng bumili nang

• Goat's milk
• Kittens milk
• Pet's milk.

Since mostly avail lang po ito sa petshop, Shop*e, lazada. Mahirap pa hanapin. Pwede any Lactose free na milk, like pang baby's milk. Like Nestogen, bonna and etc.

Di sila pwede ng Cow's milk at iba pa na may lactose since di Kaya ng tummy nila yon tunawin. Baka magcause Lang ng diarrhea.

Forcefeed mga kits nito gamit syringe, dropper or Kaya pwede rin buy po Kayo ng Bottle na pang small animals

(3-4 days kayang itagal ng kits na di nakadede.)

- Sa 1st 2 weeks of age ng kits, maselan sila Kaya need sila bantayan or icheck lagi. Baka langgamin, lamigin, dagain and etc. Make sure na Yung cage or lagayan nung doe, di mapapasukan ng kahit anong peste ah.

- Iwasan din Ang maingay na paligid, or pwede makastress sa doe. Pwede Kasi nitong kainin ang sariling anak pag ganun.

- Pag dating ng 6 weeks - 8 weeks ng kits, Pwede na ihiwalay or iwean sa doe. Pinakaedad na maganda iout Ang kits talaga is 2 mos or 8 weeks since Marunong na sila kumain ng Pellets at damo nito, di na rin dumedede. Mataas na rin Survival Rate.

-After 10-15 days, pwede na ulit ibreed Ang doe. ✔️

Ano nga ba ang mga kinakain ng kuneho?

Commercial Pellets:
-Bantrade, integra 3000, Gmp3

Grasses and Leaves:
- Nappier grass, Paragrass, Star grass, talahib
-Madre de Agua leaves, Mulberry leaves, Banana leaves,Malunggay
-Hay/tuyong damo
-Tubig

PROPER FEEDING:

-Ang pagpapakain ng pellets ay sa umaga at hapon lamang sa daming 40grams sa palakihin at 70 grams sa lactating/nagpapasuso

-Unli grass at hay sa buong araw upang maging balanse ang kanilang kinakain

-Mahalaga na panatilihing may inuming tubig ang rabbits

-Maaring magbigay ng prutas gaya ng saging,mansanas,mangga,grapes,strawberry atbp. ngunit ibigay lng ito as treats sa knila at small amout lng dpat at siguraduhing natanggal ang buto nito

-Ang ihi ng rabbits ay nakadepende sa kinakain nla kaya no need to worry kpag napansin nyo na iba ang kulay ng ihi nla

Natural Vitamins for Rabbits:

-FERMENTED OREGANO- makakatulong pra makaiwas cla sa sipon at iba pang sakit. Maghanda lamang ng magkasing daming amount ng fresh oregano na hiniwa at molases/pulot at ilagay ito sa isang container na may takip at takpan ng mabuti at antayin maferment ng 1-2 weeks at pede ng ipainom sa mga rabbits naten.
Paalala:huwag lalagyan ng tubig habang pineferment hayaan lamang na ang molases at oregano lng ang nakalagay sa container

-Maari din ipakain ang fresh oregano sa knila. Magbigay lamang ng isang dahon ng fresh oregano araw araw

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR- maraming pakinabang ang ACV sa rabbits in terms of their health lalo na sa fertility ng mga breeding doe. Sa isang galon ng tubig maglagay lamang ng 2-3 tbsp ng ACV at haluin at pede na ipainom sa kanila

Mga Pagkaing dapat iwasan:

-KANGKONG- ang kangkong ay nagtataglay ng high water content na maaring magsanhi ng diarrhea sa kanila
-maaring ipakain ang kangkong at camote tops basta kpag pinitas ngaun bukas na ng hapon ipakain upang malanta na at mabawasan ang sobrang tubig nito

-CARROTS- ang carrots ay nagtataglay ng high sugar content na maaring makasama sa kanila ang ipakain na lamang ay ang dahon ng carrots

- CABBAGE AND LETTUCE-maari clang magkaroon ng diarrhea at GI stasis kpag pinakain cla nito

-DAHON NG IPIL-IPIL- iwasang magpakain nito lalo na sa mga breeding bucks dahil maaring magresulta ng pagiging impotent/pagkabaog ng mga bucks naten

Pinapaliguan ba ang rabbit?

-Hindi. Maaring magkasakit ang rabbit kpag pinaliguan akala natin mabuti sa knila pero hndi natin alam isa ito sa pinaka ayaw nla. Maaring punasan nlang ng basang tela dahil ang rabbit ay parang pusa sanay silang maglinis ng sarili nila

-all wired cage
- flooring- 1/2 x 1/2 welded wire or rekta Plastic Matting
-sidings- 1 x 1 welded wire
-Cage size must be 2ft x 2 ft x 1ft
-plastic matting same size sa cage floring if naka welded flooring

Ilagay ang rabbit cage sa malilim na lugar gaya ng ilalim ng puno o igawa sila ng sariling housing upang maprotektahan sila sa init at sa ulan

Ano gagawin kapag may sintomas ng heat stroke?

-karaniwang sintomas ng heat stroke ay ang biglang nagseizures/pangingisay o kaya bglang panghihina ng rabbit

- ang first aid ay punasan ng basang tela ang bandang tenga at batok o kaya nman ay ibalot ito sa tela upang mabawasan ang high temperature nito at ilagay sila sa malamig na lugar

Ano gagawin kpag nag diarrhea?

-ang sintomas ng diarrhea ay ang biglang paglambot ng dumi at malamig ang tenga ibig sabihin nadehydrate na sya
Magpakain ng dahon ng caimito o kaya ilaga at ipainom ito

-alisin ang pellets at magpakain lamang ng hay at air dried na grasses
Kapag ayaw uminom ay kumuha ng syringe alisin ang needle at iforce ng ipainom sa knya

-maglagay din ng dextrose powder o kaya pedialyte pra hndi sila madehydrate

Ano gagawin kapag may mange/mites/galis??

-magpahid ng virgin coconut oil, pinaglangisan ng niyog o kaya cooking oil sa infected area

Maari din magdikdik ng dahon ng madre de cacao at ipahid ito sa infected area

Kpag ayaw gumaling ay maaring magpainom ng ivermectin powder o kaya mag inject ng ivermectin pero consult expert pra sa proper dosage ng gamot

Kapag over grown ang ngipin at kuko ano gagawin??

-ang pagkakaroon ng overgrown teeth ay dahil sa pellets na kinakain nla kaya mainam na magbigay ng mga damo o kaya mga sanga ng puno gaya ng malunggay

-palagiang itrim ito pra sa kaligtasan ng bunnies at pra na din sa atin

Nakagat ako ng rabbit may rabies ba sila??

-ang rabbit ay hindi nagtataglay ng rabies dahil domesticated animals sila at all natural ang kinakain nla.

It was shown to be beneficial /OK pag under 40% of their diet lang ang consumption. If 40% or beyond, it affected/decreased the fertility of Male rabbits. (No mention was made about affecting the females).. But it is also good to know this new info from your French rabbit Expert- that there is a risk of aborting babies for females fed with Ipil ipil..."

Flemish Giants are still prized for their meat and for their fur, but are also often bred today as companion animals. They are known as the “Gentle Giants” of the rabbit world, and are regarded as wonderful pets. If treated correctly, they are very docile and gentle even with small children.

Yes, Flemish Giant Rabbits are incredibly large, weighing between 9 and 15 pounds, although it’s not unusual for some of this breed to top 20 pounds. Their fur comes in a variety of colors, although it is always a solid color.
