While many associate March 17th with St. Patrick's Day, it is also St. Gertrude of Nivelles Day. She is considered the patron saint of travelers, gardeners, widows, recently deceased souls, souls in purgatory, rodents and most importantly...cats!
In "If Cats Disappeared from the World," Kawamura invites readers into a whimsical yet deeply emotional journey that forces us to confront what we value most in life. Through the protagonistâs encounters with the devil and his reflections on the things we often take for granted, the novel delivers profound insights into human connections, the fleeting nature of time, and the simple joys that make life worth living. Below are 10 key lessons and insights from this moving story.
1. The Value of Small Things
As the protagonist considers erasing objects like phones, movies, and clocks from the world, he begins to realize how even the smallest things can carry immense meaning. The story reminds us to appreciate the simple joys and everyday items that enrich our lives in ways we donât always notice. The lesson? Itâs the small, ordinary things that often make life extraordinary.
2. Love Gives Life Meaning
At its heart, this novel is about the power of loveâwhether itâs love for family, friends, or even a pet. The protagonistâs reflections on his late mother and his beloved cat, Cabbage, highlight how love anchors us and gives our lives purpose. The takeaway? Love, in all its forms, is what makes life truly meaningful.
3. Mortality Brings Clarity
Facing the inevitability of his death, the protagonist is forced to confront what matters most to him. The story illustrates how the awareness of mortality can sharpen our focus on whatâs truly importantâour relationships, our passions, and the memories we create. The insight? Rather than fearing death, we can let it guide us to live more intentionally.
4. Technology Can Distance Us From What Matters
When the protagonist considers erasing phones from the world, he reflects on how technology has both connected and distanced people. While phones make communication easier, they often distract us from face-to-face interactions and deeper connections. The lesson? Itâs important to balance technology with meaningful, real-world relationships.
5. Memories Are a Source of Immortality
The protagonist finds solace in the idea that the love and memories we leave behind allow us to live on in the hearts of others. His reflections on his motherâs influence in his life show how powerful memories can be in shaping who we are. The takeaway? Even when weâre gone, the impact weâve had on others endures.
6. Sacrifices Reveal Our True Priorities
The devilâs requests force the protagonist to think about what heâs willing to sacrifice for more time. This process reveals his deepest priorities, showing him what he values most in the world. The insight? When faced with tough choices, we discover what truly matters to us.
7. Pets Teach Us Unconditional Love
The protagonistâs relationship with his cat, Cabbage, is a central thread in the story. Cabbage represents the simple, unconditional love that pets give us, reminding us of the joy and comfort they bring to our lives. The lesson? Pets enrich our lives in profound ways, offering companionship and teaching us to love without expectation.
8. Loss is an Inevitable Part of Life
Through the protagonistâs reflections on his mother and the things heâs asked to erase, the novel shows that loss is an inescapable part of life. Rather than avoiding it, we can learn to accept loss as part of the human experience. The takeaway? Loss helps us appreciate the fleeting beauty of the things we cherish.
9. Happiness Lies in the Present Moment
The protagonist learns that chasing more time or material possessions doesnât necessarily lead to happiness. Instead, happiness comes from being present and appreciating the here and now. The insight? True contentment comes from embracing the present moment and finding gratitude in what we already have.
10. Life is Precious Because Itâs Fleeting
Ultimately, the protagonist comes to understand that lifeâs fragility is what makes it so precious. The finite nature of our time on Earth gives it meaning and urgency, encouraging us to live fully and authentically. The lesson? Rather than fearing the end, we should celebrate the beauty of lifeâs impermanence.
At its core, "If Cats Disappeared from the World" is a meditation on what makes life meaningful. Through its whimsical premise and heartfelt reflections, Genki Kawamura reminds us to cherish the love, memories, and small joys that define our existence. The novel challenges readers to live with greater awareness, gratitude, and purposeâand to never take the things we hold dear for granted.
As the protagonist learns, âItâs not the length of our lives that matters, but how we choose to spend the time we have.â This profound story encourages us to embrace lifeâs impermanence, treasure our relationships, and find beauty in the everyday moments that make life worth living

Scientists finally discovered what causes orange fur in cats.
They also found what makes the patchy patterns of calicos and tortoiseshells.
Two independent research teams discovered that a genetic deletion near a gene called Arhgap36, located on the X chromosome, drives the production of orange pigment in feline fur. This breakthrough sheds light on the long-standing genetic mystery that explains why most orange cats are male and why nearly all calicos and tortoiseshells are female.
The researchers found that this deletion increases the production of Arhgap36 RNA, activating a molecular pathway that causes melanocytesâpigment-producing skin cellsâto generate a reddish-yellow pigment. This mechanism bypasses the more commonly known Mc1r gene, which influences red hair in other mammals but doesnât explain orange fur in cats.
The discovery, published on the preprint server bioRxiv, marks the first time Arhgap36 has been linked to skin or hair coloration in any species. Experts are excited by this unexpected finding, which reveals a new molecular pathway and offers fresh insights into the complexity of feline genetics. As one researcher put it, "Everything you need to know about genetics you can learn from your cat."

American writer Ernest Hemingway was undoubtedly one of the most iconic cat lovers in the literary world, alongside Mark Twain, who took his love for cats so far that he refused to associate with people who didnât like them and even rented cats when he couldnât travel with his own.
Many of you are probably familiar with Hemingwayâs house in Key West, Florida, home to about 60 cats. Hemingwayâs first polydactyl cat, named Snow, was a gift from a captain and marked the beginning of his deep bond with these animals.
Many of the cats living at the Hemingway House today are descendants of Snow, and all are lovingly cared for by the staff. Itâs a wonderful place for both literature lovers and cat enthusiasts. A tradition at the Hemingway House is that all the cats, after Snow, are named after famous characters, with Mark Twain being one of them, as he was a literary influence on Hemingway.
âA cat has absolute emotional honesty: humans may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.â - Ernest Hemingway
