When reptiles brumate, it's similar to hibernation where they become inactive to conserve energy throughout the winter. Not every hognose keeper practices brumation, but since it is natural for temperate snakes there are those that argue that this deep sleep is vital for healthier, more long-lived animals. Brumation for sure has its risks and its important to watch out for complications (drastic weight loss, not waking up trom brumation, etc.).
