EVACUATION FOR THE ANIMALS TOGETHER WITH PEOPLE. Now that Governor Grex Lagman has ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents inside the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone around Mayon Volcano, PAWS urges government officials and agencies to include the animals in the evacuation plan and to provide temporary shelter for them near the human evacuation areas.

Often, problems arise because the people have been asked to leave their animals behind during evacuations. These animals are either sources of livelihood for farmers or beloved companion animals of residents. This results in a situation where people keep coming back to the danger zone for their animals or refuse to evacuate early because there are no systems in place to allow them to evacuate their animals.

We appeal to government agencies and the LGU to allocate spaces within a practicable distance from the human evacuation areas to allow farmers and pet owners to still care for their animals.

PAWS has been advocating the inclusion of animals in the National Disaster Preparedness Plan for decades as the organization has been involved in rescuing animals who have been left behind in disaster situations starting with the 1999 Cherry Hills landslide and the 2009 Typhoon Ondoy flooding in Metro Manila.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and animals of Albay.
