Case: Hookworm in Dogs‼️

WHAT ARE HOOKWORMS?

Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Uncinaria stenocephala) are intestinal parasites of the cat and dog that get their name from the hook-like mouthparts they use to anchor themselves to the lining of the intestinal wall. They are only about 1/8" (2-3 mm) long and so small that it is very difficult to see them with the naked eye. Despite their small size, they ingest large amounts of blood from the tiny blood vessels in the intestinal wall. A large number of hookworms can cause inflammation in the dog’s intestine, as well as a life-threatening decrease in the number of red bloods cells (called anemia). Anemia is most common in puppies, but can occur in adult dogs.

HOW DO DOGS🐶 GET INFECTED?

Dogs may become infected with hookworms by one or all of four routes:
🪱orally
🪱through the skin
🪱through the mother's placenta before birth (in utero)
🪱through the mother's milk

It is important to have your pets regulary dewormed, even if there isn't anything visibly wrong with it.

CASE OF THE DAY❗

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk.

Dogs that are ill from CANINE PARVOVIRUS INFECTION affects dogs' gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated f***s (stool), environments, or people. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. )

𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒖𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 (𝑪𝑷𝑽) causes inflammation in the intestines resulting in extreme vomiting and diarrhoea which may or may not contain blood. Additionally, a lack of appetite, depression, dehydration and fever is noted

There is NO TREATMENT to kill the virus once it infects the dog. However, the virus does not cause death but rather loss of the intestinal tract’s lining which results in severe electrolyte imbalances and infection in the blood stream (sepsis) which ultimately results in death

The only way to prevent PARVOVIRUS in your dog is by VACCINATION.
