Abscess in cats

Abscesses in cats are localized collections of pus within tissues, organs, or confined spaces, usually resulting from bacterial infections. These infections often occur due to bite wounds from fights with other animals, as the sharp teeth of cats can inject bacteria deep into tissues. Abscesses can form in almost any part of the body but are most commonly found under the skin

Etiology

The primary cause of abscesses in cats is most commonly Pasteurella multocida, through bite wounds. Other bacteria, such as Staphylococcusand Streptococcus species, can also contribute to infection. The body's immune response to this bacterial invasion leads to the accumulation of white blood cells, dead tissue, and bacteria, forming pus.

Clinical Signs

• Swelling and warmth at the site of infection
• Pain and discomfort
• Lethargy and reduced appetite
• Fever
• A ruptured abscess may drain pus, which is typically thick and may be foul-smelling
• Limping or reluctance to move (if the abscess is located on a limb or near a joint

Case:
he's infected by severe periocular swelling and rash. Examination and cytology revealed a fungal infection. The infection was likely secondary to immunosuppressive medications used to treat an autoimmune blood condition. 🔬 Bojo was treated for his fungal infection.
