Effects of Animals of Human Health:

Nothing compares to the joy of coming home to a loyal companion. The unconditional love of a pet can do more than keep you company. Pets may also decrease stress, improve heart health, and even help children with their emotional and social skills.
An estimated 68% of U.S. households have a pet.
Interacting with animals has numerous benefits for humans, including decreased stress levels, reduced loneliness, and improved mental well-being. Studies have shown that cortisol levels and blood pressure decrease when humans engage with animals, while feelings of social support and mood boosters increase (Source: Harvard Health Publishing). Owning pets can even improve heart health, and interacting with animals can improve social and emotional skills in children (Source: American Heart Association). Furthermore, dogs can encourage physical activity, and animals can teach humans about mindfulness and improve pain management for those with serious illnesses (Source: National Institutes of Health). Some animals can even be trained to detect and alert their owners of dangerous situations, such as low blood sugar (Source: Diabetes Alert Dogs). Overall, animals have a profound impact on human well-being, and incorporating them into our lives can have lasting positive effects.

The Voiceless Animal Cruelty Index has ranked Pakistan as an "Adequate Performer" (C rank). Although the country has low production and moderate consumption of animal products, it's animal protection legislation is inadequate, particularly for farm animals.

It has been ranked 9 in producing cruelty. Pakistan slaughters around 5.7 land-based animals per person per year, compared to a global average of 10.1. The country’s dependence on farmed animals is low, with around 3.4 farmed animals per person, versus a global average of 4.1. While animal production is typically small-scale and extensive, large-scale factory farming systems are emerging.

It has been ranked 14 in consuming cruelty. The Pakistani diet contains a higher proportion of animal products than the world average, with around 42% of the average person’s diet made up of land-based animal protein, compared to the global average of 35.2%. Each person consumes around 27.3g of land-based animal protein per day, close to the global average.

It has been ranked 38 in sanctioning cruelty. Pakistan is rated as a poor performer (“E”) under the Animal Protection Index (API), and its farmed animal protection legislation achieved the worst performance rating (“G”) under the same index. The animal protection regime is weak and outdated, there is minimal legislation governing farmed animals and enforcement is inadequate.

Saving domestic animals is a crucial aspect of our responsibility as pet owners and members of society. Domestic animals, such as dogs, cats, and other companion animals, bring immense joy and companionship to our lives. However, many of these animals are subjected to neglect, abuse, and abandonment, leading to a life of suffering and pain.

Saving domestic animals is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it is a moral obligation to protect and care for those who depend on us for their well-being. Domestic animals are entirely reliant on us for their basic needs, and it is our duty to provide them with a safe and loving environment.

Secondly, saving domestic animals helps to prevent animal overpopulation, which can lead to euthanasia and other inhumane practices. By spaying and neutering our pets, we can reduce the number of unwanted litters and prevent the suffering of countless animals.

Lastly, saving domestic animals has a positive impact on our communities. By promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, we can create a more compassionate and empathetic society. Additionally, studies have shown that children who grow up with pets develop important life skills, such as empathy and responsibility.

In conclusion, saving domestic animals is a vital aspect of our responsibility as pet owners and members of society. By providing a loving home, promoting animal welfare, and supporting organizations that work to protect domestic animals, we can make a positive impact on the lives of countless animals and create a more compassionate world.

04/06/2024

Pakistan's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1890) provides a good basis for the protection of animals, elaborating on how they feel pain and suffering. Alongside this, the Halal Authority Act (2015) mandates human treatment of animals during slaughter procedures, stating that animals are prohibited from seeing each other being slaughtered. Despite all of this, there are still alarmingly large gaps with animal welfare legislation in Pakistan. The first cruelty act is extremely outdated and doesn't further elaborate on how owners should treat their companions apart from mentioning how abandoning them is illegal.

There is little mandate on the treatment of animals in zoos and farms in Pakistan alongside the already rampant amount of stray dog mass poisoning and culling cases. Stray animals, especially, are regularly mistreated and abused and are often denied necessary treatment as well. It is unclear, beyond specific delegations to provincial wildlife authorities, which authorities do indeed hold responsibility for animal welfare in Pakistan. These outdated animal protection laws are rarely imposed which renders their existence as null. The Pakistan animal welfare authorities are urged to mandate new laws and legislations protecting stray animals as well as zoo and farm animals when it comes to their rearing, slaughtering and transporting in order to encourage more ethical and compassionate procedures.

CASE 13: BOBA

This is Boba. He was taken in completely unconcious and barely breathing with evidence of being run over. His condition suggested he was left for days in the heat after being run over, resulting in internal damage and severe heatstroke. He is undergoing treatment but cannot stand, urinate or walk on his own. Boba has, however, proven to be a fighter as he is still desperately clinging onto hope despite experiencing extremely high fevers

Cases like Boba's are extremely common. Kittens and other smaller animals are often victim to being run over or trampled on and then left to fend for themselves without treatment. Accidents happen, but taking accountability is also necessary. If you or a loved on accidentally runs over an animal, do your part as a responsible citizen and take them in for the treatment they need. No animal asks to be in the impediments they are often put through, especially due to man made situations, which is why it is our responsibility to drive and act safe and help any stray animal that may need our help.

04/06/2024

The rate of street dog adoption in Pakistan is almost Zero, according to a local animal care charity organization Todd's Welfare Society (TWS). They mention that adopters usually avoid taking in street and rescue dogs due to them not being purebred and of suitable pedigree. Street dogs, due to scattered breeding patterns, end up becoming mixed breeds which potential adopters tend to avoid. TWS relocates rescued dogs to new homes once they have healed or lived their lives in the shelter and is aided in this procedure by other international dog shelters such as the UK based charity Dog Bus.

Avoiding taking in street dogs simply because they are purebred is a choice. Understandably, individuals go for looks, aesthetics and visual appeal of dogs alongside pure pedigree, but what they don't understand is how they can change the life of a street dog completely simply by harboring compassion and taking them in. Street dogs and cats tend to be extremely loving and trusting as they have been through many hardships compared to store bred animals. Alongside this, many people fail to realize pure breeding is an Unethical practice. Many breeders tend to overlook the welfare of the animals they are breeding and the genetic traits they are passing on to offspring by mass and repetitive breeding. Overbreeding causes serious health problems like lung infections and recessive inherited disorders to express themselves, all while shelter dogs remain completely unadopted. Most of the time, they do not provide adequate Healthcare, hygienic conditions or safe housing. Breeders go through all of this just to sell these animals like property for insanely high prices, simply because they are purebred.

Adopt, don't shop. Look towards taking in loving street animals than supporting an unethical business that exploites and diminishes the reproductive rights of animals and causes the offspring more harm than good.

Animal abuse is a heart-wrenching reality that affects countless innocent creatures worldwide. It takes many forms, including neglect, physical and emotional torture, and abandonment. Animals suffer unimaginable pain and distress, often leading to death. This scourge perpetuates a culture of violence and disregard for life, with far-reaching consequences for our community.

Education and awareness are crucial in preventing animal abuse. Recognizing signs of abuse, such as malnutrition, injuries, and fearful behavior, is essential. Reporting suspicions to local authorities or animal control can save lives. Supporting animal welfare organizations through donations, volunteering, or advocacy helps combat abuse.

Stronger laws and enforcement are vital in holding perpetrators accountable. Adopting pets from shelters rather than buying from breeders or pet stores can reduce demand for animals bred in inhumane conditions. By working together, we can break the cycle of cruelty and create a safer, more compassionate world for animals. Let us unite to raise our voices against animal abuse and ensure that our furry friends receive the love, respect, and protection they deserve. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for all living beings.

03/06/2024

The mistreatment of domestic animals is a heart-wrenching reality that persists in the shadows of our daily lives. Millions of animals are abandoned, left to fend for themselves, while 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized annually due to overcrowding and lack of resources. Countless others suffer physical and emotional abuse, leading to permanent damage or death. The reasons are complex, ranging from unawareness of proper care to cruelty and disregard. Cats, known for their independence, suffer silently, succumbing to starvation, dehydration, and exposure. Dogs, loyal and loving, are subjected to physical abuse, cowering in fear and pain. Other domestic animals, like birds, rabbits, and reptiles, are confined to unsanitary conditions, deprived of essential care. It's our responsibility to recognize and address this issue, educating ourselves and others, supporting shelters, reporting abuse, and advocating for stronger animal protection laws. Together, we can create a world where domestic animals are treated with love, respect, and compassion.

[ Before and After ]

Meet Millie, a strong soul who even after a vicious attack still remains resilient. She was attacked by another cat, which resulted in her getting brutally bruised. Her tiny leg got fractured and the poor soul's tail was broken in 3 pieces. Her devastating tale doesn't end here though, because when she was under treatment, she got attacked again and this time suffered injury to her ribs which ended up with her lungs getting punctured. However, even after all such hurdles, Millie still remains firm in her will to live and is now under the care of people who'll give her the care and love she really deserves.

03/06/2024

Pakistan is and has always faced a mass stray dog crisis with the stray population heavily outweighing the sheltered population. With this situation comes side effects like dog bites, animal abuse and rabies cases making headlines every other day. It is estimated that there are around 3 million stray dogs in the country with more than 1 million dog bite cases reported annually with 2000-5000 people dying of rabies every year. Karachi bares the highest portion of these numbers when it comes to dog bites with the Sindh government announcing a mass vaccination campaign in 2020 to counter these attacks which unfortunately failed and instead resulted in a mass culling to control stray dog populations.

The most common global methods of controlling stray dog populations includes culling, sheltering and "Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release" (CNVR) policy. For years, Pakistani officials have resorted to mass culling to control populations but has failed to keep them from rising, proving this method's ineffectiveness. Culling involves the mass inhuman slaughtering of free roaming dogs via poisoning and shooting and has, in fact, been banned for it's brutal nature and ineffectiveness in eradicating rabies and other diseases. Furthermore, according to the OIE guidelines, mass culling of stray animals to control the stray population is deemed ineffective and inhumane. This procedure is also proven to be counter effective as populations have instead risen after this. To date, the most suitable procedure seems to be CNVR as it is feasible, humane, sustainable and most of all ethical as has been proven in other developing countries such as Turkey.

Mass culling and shooting is not the route which should be undertaken in order to reduce stray dog populations. Show strays compassion and treat them ethically.

02/06/2024

Animal cruelty in Pakistan is rampant. From burden animals like donkeys and horses being mistreated and underfed to turtles being given away as goodies at children's birthdays and even to caged lions and tigers being displayed at political rallies as mascots. Regulatory measures are scarcely being taken and implemented by authorities which proves the outdated "Pakistan's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1890)" is not protecting animals at all. Animal enclosures in zoos are rarely taken care of and this is proven by the stark criticism received by Islamabad Zoo for its abhorrent conditions. Due to protests over the mistreatment of an elephant, Kaavan, the zoo was forced to close and transfer all animals to wildlife sanctuaries during which 2 lions passed away from unsuitable transportation facilities.

The appropriate care and treatment of animals is not taken seriously in Pakistan and this issue in itself is rarely talked about as locals do not consider animals and strays a high enough priority. If laws pertaining of animals rights and protection are not updated and upheld promptly by authorities, why should the citizens be expected to follow them either? This sick mindset has been the case of so many unecessary deaths, cullings, abuse cases, abandonment cases and mistreatment of animals and it has become clear that new and updated laws relevant to the current cultural status of the country should be implemented.

You can be that change 🐾

CASE 11: NEENO

This sweet puppy and his family were victims of a cruel, hate fueled shooting. Unfortunately, Neeno bore witness to his siblings and mothers being brutally shot at simply for being the only thing they have known all their lives: being rabid, feral dogs. Neeno survived miraculously but was left with a chest infection for which he is undertaking treatment as well as deworming and vaccinations after which he will be adopted.

Cases like this are stark, unfortunate reminders of how apathetic and cruel human beings can be, especially towards those who are vulnerable and cannot protect themselves like stray animals. Resorting to completely eradicate animals simply for being deemed "rabid" is inhumane, unecessary and completely unethical. Fostering, adopting and treating strays should be the main priority. Prioritizing compassion and empathy for unfortunate pups like Neeno is of the utmost importance keeping in mind the trauma and pain these poor animals have been through. Be kind, adopt before eradicating.

01/06/2024

The dark side of animal racing in Pakistan is a stark reality that cannot be ignored. Thousands of horses, dogs, and camels are bred and trained for racing each year, only to be subjected to harsh conditions, neglect, and abuse. Many of these animals meet a tragic end, with over 500 horses dying annually from racing injuries or exhaustion, over 1,000 greyhounds abandoned or killed each year when no longer profitable, and over 200 camels dying from neglect or abuse in racing circuits. According to a report, 71% of horses used for racing are not registered, and 40% of jockeys are under the age of 16. Horses are pushed to extreme speeds, often leading to exhaustion and injury, with 15% of horses suffering injuries during races. They're drugged to enhance performance, and many are abandoned or sold for slaughter when no longer profitable. The root causes of this problem lie in overbreeding for profit, lack of regulations and enforcement, and cultural and economic pressures to prioritize winning at any cost. The consequences are not only animal suffering and death but also environmental impact from mass breeding and disposal, as well as the perpetuation of cruel industries. To address this issue, it is essential to strengthen animal welfare laws and enforcement, promote humane treatment and retirement options, and support alternative forms of entertainment that do not involve animal exploitation.

Monkeys Were Cloned and Plagued With Mental Health Problems:

Chinese scientists have done something big and controversial. They've made monkeys with mental health problems by copying their genes. This is a huge step in learning about brain issues, but it's also making a lot of people argue about whether it's okay to change genes like this.
Using cutting-edge techniques, scientists replicated primates with conditions mirroring human psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. These monkeys act and think like real people with these problems, helping scientists understand how these illnesses work in the brain.
While many appreciate this advancement critics voice concerns over the ethical outcomes. The induction of mental illness in sentient beings raises profound moral questions about the boundaries of scientific experimentation and the welfare of genetically modified organisms.
As scientists think hard about whether it's right to change genes and study mental health in animals, this big step they've taken makes people talk about it a lot. It's not just about science anymore, it's about what's right and wrong for everyone.

31/05/2024

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of dogs, cats and rabbits died in pet stores due to abandonment during lockdown (Dailytimes.com.pk). From Karachi's Empress Market, which housed up to 1,000 animals (70% of which were found dead) to Tollinton Market in Lahore where 20 dogs were dumped in a sewer, helpless animals are often the first to suffer the after effects of anomalies like mass lockdowns, pandemics and general unexpected societal events. Due to the strict lockdown, no one bothered to check up on these pets, resulting in them dying due to starvation, lack of ventilation and pure negligence.

This event, albeit 4 years ago, is proof of how when locals are plunged into crisis they often fail to consider animals and pets under their care. We, as responsible and compassionate citizens, must understand that animals housed by us are inevitably fully dependent on us. Resorting to neglecting them under times of stress and pressure is unethical, whatever the reason may be. Be better, protect your local strays and sheltered pets and avoid allowing them to fall victim to negligence.

In January of 2021, around 171 stray dogs were killed by animal control officials in a mass eradication attempt to control dog populations (Thenews.com.pk). From 1st January 2021 to 7th February 2021, poison made of a mixture of 1080 and Strychnine was used as bait in areas with large dog populations in order to lure them in and put them down. In an inhumane attempt at controlling dog populations, poisons with strong acids and toxins that cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and death were used, which are harmful to both humans and animals. Stray animals are always vulnerable to these attacks since they do not receive proper protection or care from citizens of the city and easily trust anyone that may lure them in under the guise of being helpful by leaving them food. Cruel individuals interested in mistreating animals that cannot protect themselves often find it easy in doing so due to suitable access and lack of accountability and awareness from higher authorities. Controlling stray dog populations via mass eradication is unethical, illegal and cruel as there are many safer and kinder ways to control spikes in population, such as spaying, neutering and tagging animals by keeping their numbers in check.

CASE 9: BONNIE

Our sweet Bonnie had a terrible accident recently. She was run over by a vehicle, resulting in a broken leg. Struggling to move, she dragged her injured leg along the road, causing a severe wound on her hind leg. We found her crying in a bush, scared and screaming in pain. Tragically, the wound started decomposing and rotted due to the dragging. It’s been heartbreaking to see her suffer, but Bonnie's bravery and resilience inspire us every day. Despite the challenges, she is now under the best care, receiving the treatment she needs to heal. We're hopeful for her full recovery and appreciate any support and positive thoughts for our little fighter.

CASE 8: SIKANDAR

This gentle eagle was found in a park by a teenager with a wing broken beyond repair. Sikandar was unable to fly and clearly in need of help, so he was taken in and given the necessary treatment he required.

Birds like Sikandar often fall victim to injuries caused by both man-made and natural circumstances, however, in either case it is our responsibility as active citizens to help and treat these animals in any way we can. Injured animals are often either ignored or abandoned, as individuals refuse to take the responsibility of treating them and instead see them as a burden. Being enthusiastic about taking in animals as pets should not only apply to uninjured and able animals but should also include disabled, injured and otherwise compromised creatures as well.

Showing compassion and understanding to these animals is the least we could give them as they never ever choose to be in the situations they often end up in. Sikandar is treated but not adopted, consider taking in sweet and gentle animals like him.
