What Makes Red-Eyes Weak?

Do you know why black eyes turn red in inos and fallows? To answer this question we need to know first what makes the eyes black. The answer is melanin.

Melanin is the pigment in parrots that gives these birds the color black and varying shades of it (from light gray to pitch black) all throughout its body. This includes the plumage, legs, toes and nails and of course the eyes.

If melanin is what makes the eyes black, then why do inos and fallows have red eyes? In the case of the ino gene, it restricts the production or development of melanin in lovebirds and in the case of the fallow genes, they reduce the melanin in varying degrees. Lacking or vastly reduced melanin in almost all parts of the body, these results into a diverse shade of elegant red eyes in inos and fallows. This is what captivates most of the breeders, the charmed red-eyes of these beautiful birds.

But what makes them beautiful in our eyes is what also makes them weak.

Lacking or reduced melanin in birds has its consequences. In a study that was published online on April 2016 by Ismael Galvan and Francisco Solano titled - "Bird Integumentary Melanins: Biosynthesis, Forms, Functions and Evolution", they described in detail how melanin has given birds different kinds of protection from the harsh environment they inhabit.

1. Protection against UV Radiation.

It is widely accepted that integumentary melanin in mammals gives protection from the harmful effects of ultra-violet radiation (UV). This is also assumed in birds, to quote Galvan and Solano: ". . . the presence of melanins in the integument is essential for the development of life on earth, melanization being considered the main physiological response of animals and microorganisms against the damaging effects of UV."

2. Protection against Mechanical Damage

Plumage strength and the sturdiness of other biological tissues are mainly caused by the presence of melanin in these areas. If the birds somehow lost the capacity of producing melanins, they are now prone to mechanical damage. The study states: ". . . it has experimentally been shown that feather and bill melanization makes increase the hardness of these structures." Melanin has also been proven to give the birds protection from feather-degrading bacteria. And it seems that skin melanization is suspected to be a primitive component of the innate immune system.

3. Thermoregulation

It is known that birds maintain constant body temperature. Melanized structures in birds play an important role in increasing temperature when the need arises such as when cold season approaches. This is the reason why many red-eye hatchlings do not usually make it in the winter. Or the hatchlings drop dead when there is a sudden drop in temperature.

It is now clear why red-eye birds are relatively weak. The lack or reduction of melanin is the culprit. Red-eye birds are indeed beautiful in our eyes, but sad to say, the overall health of the birds were compromised. . .
