Neutering of male cats is called an orchidectomy. The procedure involves general and local anesthesia, and both testicles are removed through a local incision. External sutures are not generally required.

SPAYING is the common term used to describe the surgical procedure known as an ovariohysterectomy. In this procedure, the ovaries and uterus are removed completely in order to sterilize a female cat.

It is recommended that all non-breeding cats be sterilized. Several health benefits are associated with spaying your cat.

1. Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers.

2. Breast cancer is the number one type of cancer diagnosed in intact (unspayed) female cats. If your cat is spayed before her first heat cycle, there is less than ½ of 1% (0.5%) chance of developing breast cancer. With every subsequent heat cycle, the risk of developing breast cancer increases. After about 2½ years of age, ovariohysterectomy offers no protective benefit against developing breast cancer.

3.Unspayed female cats also carry the risk of developing pyometra – a fatal condition of the uterus that requires surgery to treat.

4. Finally, cats with diabetes or epilepsy should be spayed to prevent hormonal changes that may interfere with medications

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an immune-mediated disease triggered by infection with a feline coronavirus (FCOV). More than half of the cats with FIP are <12 mo old. Sexually intact cats, males, and purebred cats have a higher incidence of FIP Symptoms The signs of the noneffusive form, which may include the non-specific signs listed above as well as neurologic signs including seizures and ataxia (abnormal or uncoordinated movements) develop more slowly than those of the effusive form. The signs of effusive form of FIP usually develop and progress relatively rapidly and include development of the above-mentioned non-specific signs combined with the accumulation of fluid in body cavities, including the abdomen and the thorax (chest cavity). Affected cats may develop a pot-bellied appearance due to fluid accumulation in the abdomen, and if the fluid accumulation is excessive, it may become difficult for a cat to breathe normally. Treatment No treatment of healthy antibody-positive cats has been shown to prevent development of FIP. 👉🏻 The ear mite, Otodectes cynotis, is a surface mite that lives on cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. It is usually found in the ear canal but it can also live on the skin surface. Ear mites are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal. 👉🏻 Ear mites are a common cause of ear disease and infection, although other ear conditions may cause similar clinical signs. 👉🏻 Clinical Signs: 1. Ear irritation, leading to scratching at the ears or head shaking. 2. A dark waxy or crusty discharge from the ear. 3. Areas of hair loss resulting from self-trauma caused by the dog’s scratching or excessive grooming. 4. A crusted rash around or in the ear. 5. An aural hematoma (a large blood blister on the ear, caused by rupture of small blood vessels between the skin and cartilage); this occurs due to the dog scratching at their ears.

Canine distemper is a contagious and serious viral illness with no known cure. The disease affects dogs, and certain species of wildlife. Unfortunately, there is no cure for canine distemper. Treatment for the disease, therefore, is heavily focused on alleviating the symptoms. If the animal has become anorexic or has diarrhea, intravenous supportive fluids may be given. Discharge from the eyes and nose must be cleaned away regularly. Antibiotics may be prescribed to control the symptoms caused by a secondary bacterial infection, and phenobarbitals and potassium bromide may be needed to control convulsions and seizures. There are no antiviral drugs that are effective in treating the disease. The best prevention for canine distemper is routine vaccinations and immediate isolation of infected animals. Special care must be taken to protect new-born pups from exposure, since they are especially susceptible to the disease.
