Puerto Rico has one of the most out-of-control populations of street animals in the world, resulting in a unique mixture of dog breeds referred to as SATOS. Despite their hardship, they are notorious for their persistent loyalty and affection. While Punta Santiago is just one piece of this population, as long as we are here we will fight to help those in need, one Sato at a time.

Pinta is looking for her forever home -- could that be you?! We are looking for a foster or adopter for Pinta in the NJ/NY/CT area and would love to find someone ASAP -- please share!
Pinta was rescued pregnant by Bibi late in 2022. After nurturing her through her pregnancy, Pinta's puppies were all adopted, leaving just Pinta as she looks for her forever home. Pinta is a mellow and sweet baby girl but still has her moments of playfulness. While she can be shy at first, she ultimately wants to be just cuddled up in your arms or on your lap. Pinta is under 10 lbs and estimated to be under 2 years. Pinta is making her way up to New Jersey this coming week and would love to have a home lined up when she arrives! She will come spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and up to date with preventatives.

We told you that you wouldn't have to wait long for a Messi update -- look at this happy guy!

Thanks to the quick action of Gladys and Bobby on the day of his rescue, and their devoted TLC ever since, Messi has made a full recovery (in body and in spirit) from his first day. Over the last few weeks he has been catching up on his vaccines, preventatives, and other routine vet care and should be good to go soon! He will come neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and up to date with preventatives for flea/tick and heartworm. In the meantime, Messi will be fostered in Puerto Rico but he would love to make his way to his forever home soon!

The Christmas puppies (2021) recently celebrated their gotcha day! Congratulations to this sweet family. These pups, including Rudolph, Gingerbread, Noel, Jingle, and Frosty, were rescued as young babies together in Juncos Puerto Rico by Veronica ✨. Mid-December, we received several messages from one of our fosters: a small dog had been in a fight with several larger dogs and had suffered some abrasions.

Fortunately, Gladys and Bobby were there to help rescue him. They took him in and cleaned up his wounds, and took him to the vet as soon as they could. This this little guy, now named Messi, has made huge strides. We have some happy pupdates on Messi -- so please stay tuned! 🐾❤️

Anyone looking for a sweet older guy to add to their family? Chuck may be the perfect match!

Chuck weighs around 13 to 15 pounds and is estimated to be approximately 7 years old. He likes cats and all dogs and has been loving on all of his foster siblings. He also walks very well on his leash, and enjoys long walks. Chuck was rescued trying to cross the main road in Punta Santiago, Puerto Rico, and is still being fostered nearby in Humacao. Chuck will come neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and up to date with his preventatives -- he just needs a home to fly in to!

Little miss Nova 🌠 checking in to say hello and see if she can find her forever family out there -- could that be you?
Nova is a very sweet girl, around 1 year and 25-30lbs. She just wants love and attention to make up for lost time when she was a small puppy and did not have a caring family. She plays with the other dogs at her foster home with joy and enthusiasm, though she is still working on her manners. Her foster mom brags that "she has learned so much in these few months that she has been with me" and we know with the right family she will make a great addition. Nova will come spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and up to date with her preventatives.

Just popping in to give a quick update on Bodhi -- he's doing great!
So many of you commented and reached out in response to our sweet Bodhi's picture last week. After many weeks in foster getting lots of TLC, Bodhi has made some huge strides! Already he has learned so much from his foster sib, Huddy, and gaining tons of confidence. Thank you to Felix and Bibi for all they have done for Bodhi and please stay tuned for more updates on this little pup.

Happy Tuesday! Coming in with another late 2022 adoption announcement -- congratulations Zuki! 🥳🤩
Zuki was rescued by Felix, after a friend saw her abandoned in her family home (they moved away). Felix fostered Zuki for a few weeks while she received her vaccines and was spayed. Zuki was anxiously awaiting the call that she had a potential adopter so she could make her way northward and finally it came! Thank you to Felix for rescuing, fostering, and driving between vet visits and the airport, and to Joey for help coordinating the adoption, and to Ivy for her help with the adoption and booking the flight. Last but not least, thank you to Zuki's forever family for coming to pick up Zuki at the airport and for welcoming her into their family! We couldn't be happier for her. 🥰

Meet Nova! 💫 Nova began her rescue journey after she was saved by Bibi.

Is there anything sweeter than puppy love? Tobias (PSD 2022) has been over the moon with his forever family 🥰 These kinds of pictures make us so weepy -- we can't believe how lucky our dogs are. Around mid-December, our team member, Felix, found a lone abandoned puppy and we knew as soon as Felix shared the photos that we needed to help. Please allow us to introduce Bodhi. This sweet little guy is around 5 months and ~15lbs. He has made a ton of progress in the last few weeks and we are excited to share some updates in the coming days so please stay tuned.

Now for some belated news.... 2022 ended with the sweetest gift -- Umi was adopted!!! 🥹😍
Umi began his journey to his forever home after he was found outside a small market, La Favorita, in Punta Santiago. With thanks to early efforts from Joenie and Rosemarie, Umi was able to get checked out by the vet, given his vaccines, and neutered. Fortunately, he was in good shape and from there we knew the only challenge would be finding him a good home. Umi was fostered for several weeks with Daphne and Steve of The Luving Paws Foundation where he received tons of TLC and lessons in doggie manners 🥰 Felix then helped get Umi to New Jersey, and from there he spent several weeks working with Ivy and Walter to get him up to speed on home living and obedience. Umi hit the jackpot with his family and has been settling in for just about a month. 🥹🥹 Thank you to all that helped with sweet Umi in any way -- sharing his story, driving, fostering, and our new members! We couldn't be happier for him. ❤🐾

For our first introduction, please allow us to re-introduce you to Chuck!
Chuck was rescued on the beach in Punta Santiago, Puerto Rico, by Veronica and Rosemarie. Initially, he was looking a little worse for wear. He was suffering from heartworm (for which he has now been treated) and pretty thin from his time being neglected. Since his rescue, he has received his heartworm treatments, vaccinations, and preventatives, and has been neutered. In other words, he is now in tip-top shape! ☺☺️ Chuck has been in foster for the past few months and has been doing great with his foster doggie and kittie siblings. He loves to take walks and sniff around his favorite spots at the park. While he still has a little fear of loud noises and water, he is coming around with all the love he has been receiving with his foster family. Chuck is estimated to be about 7-8 years old and is ~15lbs.

Celebrating with some ZOOMIES because Kahlúa's been adopted! 🤩🥳 . Kahlúa spent most of her life in a shelter. When our long time volunteer, Veronica, heard Kahlúa 's story, she reached out to PSD to see if there was any way we could help move her to a real home. Kahlúa spent the next couple weeks getting lots of TLC from fosters Daphne and Steven of The Luving Paws Foundation, before she finally made her way to New Jersey. The final stretch of her journey was with the help of our adoptions team Ivy and Joey, and longtime partner in rescue Luz M. Santiago. Finally we are so grateful to Kahlúa's new family for opening up their ❤️ & 🏠 to this sweet girl and for finalizing her as a member of their family. Kelsey is still looking for her forever home -- here is what her fosters have to say about their first couple weeks together. "Kelsey is not only very sweet but she is also very playful. We gave her a stuffed elephant dog toy and she adores it. When she's in the mood she's just as happy playing fetch as she is tossing it up in the air and catching it." Despite her middle age, Kelsey is playful as can be and would do well with any type of family! She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and up to date with preventatives. Percy and Sebastian just landed in Chicago with their flight angel, Judith of Moyo Village! Though they had a long trip, they made the most of their time in the airport -- seen here very much enjoying the doggie play area during their layover. Welcome, Miracle!

This week we welcomed a new doggie into the #PSDFamily. Please help us welcome Miracle and watch the video here to see her rescue by our team member, Rosemarie. 😍 . After seeing something moving in the median, Rosemarie pulled over her car to take a look. There she found an extremely scared and timid dog. Fortunately, with Rosemarie's quick thinking, she was able to coax the dog into the car and drive her to the vet and for that she named her Miracle! Miracle has a couple mild infections and anemia but she is on the road to recovery. She is now recovering with one of our fosters, Taisha. . Miracle's rescue was possible, in part, due to an extremely generous donation from Amy Sawransky and her beautiful family, and we are so grateful for all that they have done for Punta Santiago Dogs. 🥰 Miracle is still in need of a couple vaccines and spay surgery, and she will need a couple of rounds of antibiotics for her infections. How can it be that Raspberry is still looking for her forever home and someone to play with!? Look how gentle she plays with this moth! . . Raspberry is an extremely sweet, happy, gentle, and playful puppy that is now in NJ and waiting for her chance to have a family of her own. She is about 5 months old and a medium/medium-large breed mix (we think). She was rescued as part of our "berry litter" of puppies earlier this spring and managed to beat our distemper outbreak, showing how strong and special this girl truly is! She gets along great with everyone and other dogs and is available for meet and greets any time. . . One at a Time: Our Story

This rescue is dedicated to the homeless dogs of Punta Santiago, Puerto Rico and the efforts of a small community of researchers studying the rhesus monkeys on the nearby island of Cayo Santiago that volunteer all of their extra time and money to giving these abused and abandoned dogs a chance to survive. Puerto Rico has one of the most out-of-control populations of street animals in the world, resulting in a unique mixture of dog breeds referred to as SATOS. These dogs are often dumped when their owners grow tired of them, and they are grossly maltreated, starved, abused, and exposed to painful and fatal diseases if gone untreated. Despite their hardship, they are notorious for their persistent loyalty and affection. While Punta Santiago is just one piece of this population, as long as we are here we will fight to help those in need, one Sato at a time. Already we have rescued and rehomed dozens of dogs and cats and treated many more with THOUSANDS of dollars from our own pockets. In order to keep this cause alive, please donate or spread the word of the Satos that are available for adoption.
