Every moment in time is a chance to make a difference in the life of an animal in need and on this day, Bonnie made a difference in the lives of 4 one day old kittens and 5 newly dumped puppies. They were all together in a known dumping spot and left to fend for themselves. The kittens eyes were not open and umbilical chords still attached, their seconds in life were numbered.

I'm standing on my soapbox for this announcement, but we need more humans like Bonnie Lukas! Not only is it her Birthday, but she just celebrated our Second Chance 25th Anniversary. She is the epitome of compassion, resilience and courage to get the job done. Waking up every two hours to ensure the kittens had the nutrition they need to survive, what a hero!

In a heartbreaking rescue operation last week, 27 dogs were rescued from a police raid of a breeding facility on the island of Puerto Rico. Severely neglected dogs were held captive in filthy wire cages, 24/7 for many years.

We were one of several groups that were asked to assist in providing safety, rehabilitation, and sterilization. We gladly welcomed 5 new survivors into our Second Chance Family. Our brave fighters are in recovery now and are receiving all the love and care they have long deserved. If you'd like to donate to their true Second Chance, we are so very grateful for any help you can lend. Thank you for sharing our mission, it truly takes a village.

Let's take a much needed moment to celebrate a big win for two of our Second Chance sweethearts!

It's impossible to put into words the emotions that we feel when we fight daily to keep our heads above water and in the blink of an eye, someone made their problem our own.

We found an abandoned tub of 5 female puppies in our trash yesterday morning, sadly not uncommon. We wonder if they know how fragile our spirits are with every day bringing a new challenge. We had just taken two steps forward transporting two rescues off the island to now we are taking five steps back.

These helpless and confused puppies were starving and covered head to toe in fleas. We are trying desperately to catch our breath, but we won't let these innocent babies down. The island is exploding with abandoned animals, please know how much your help means to them all.

We are excited to announce that this week we will have our BIGGEST sterilization day ever! For our rescues, this critical surgery brings them one step closer to adoption!

You may remember this heartbreaking group of 7 puppies who were abandoned at our gates in a plastic tub full of steam and condensation. They are fully vaccinated and are now on our list! We are fundraising for $1,000 to sterilize 20 rescues and prepare them to find their forever homes.

Update:
It’s with a heavy heart that xrays revealed a severe break in his back leaving him with no feeling in his extremities. Without quality of life, we released him from his pain to suffer no more. Thank you to everyone who donated, it truly helped us meet his emergency needs. *xray below

As Bonnie and Hector traveled back to the rescue yesterday, they turned their car around to respond to an emergency plea of a Husky who had been hit by a car and now laid motionless in the bushes. As they approached, he gently took water and then started to cry out in pain with a low howl. He was clearly in need of urgent help!

They made a sling from a towel to support his back legs and gently moved him to the van and back to Second Chance for the night. He's now safe! We have a vet visit this morning, but our first evaluation shows no feeling in his hind legs, possibly a broken back…we are hopeful for a more positive outcome. One day at a time…
Rescued on December 26th, she sat alone and abandoned on a dirt road. She was the puppy nobody wanted, with a birth defect in her hind leg… broken in the eyes of many, a fighter in our eyes! At Second Chance, we are always ready for that special puppy that needs a little extra help. She grew strong and was finally ready for her amputation to give her a better quality of life this week. We are still hoping to raise $200 to cover the balance of her surgery. Any size donation will help, and on behalf of sweet Starr, we are all grateful! The best is truly yet to come♥️

Rescuing Hearts for 25 Years ♥️

Thousands of animals rescued as we celebrate 25 years of lifesaving work today. What began as a small rescue in the mountains of Puerto Rico with only hope to fuel our passion is now a 501c3 group powered by the love of our Sato families and our amazing animal loving friends who believe in our mission. We are so very proud of the work that we've done together knowing that our unified efforts are saving lives.

To celebrate this 25 year milestone, we are excited to transport 7 lucky rescues safely off the island to bring them one step closer to home. We humbly ask for your support as transport is our highest expense per rescue that will run us a minimum of $3,000 to cover this expense.

This work takes heart, grit and a commitment to be their voice. We couldn't do this without our unified efforts and and your unwavering support. We truly hope that we've made you proud~

As we pack their bags and secure veterinarian travel certificates, we now fundraise. This group of 7 siblings will travel up the East Coast to New Hampshire on the 20th of February where our amazing volunteers wait to greet them and reunite them with their siblings who have come before them.

Heartbreakingly, behind every abandoned animal is someone who made the choice to leave them there. At only 4 weeks of age, these three siblings were dumped just above our rescue on a mountain road with no mother to care for them. We stepped in to save their lives and are hopeful that you are able to help us. Our most urgent need is food and eventually their health protocol of vaccinations and sterilization will come.

Saying goodbye is never easy, but it's the best part of their journey to a new beginning. Transportation off the island takes an unbelievable amount of timing of flights, coordination of volunteers and a little bit of luck. It never escapes us how much each life depends on our combined efforts.

Learning that the world is much bigger than our shelter gates will take time, but this is the good stuff and we're excited for Picasso, Simon, Gaby and Levi to find their families with the help of Forever Loved. Feeling grateful ~ www.scarpr.org

Update on Mighty Titan ~
This amazingly brave boy was rescued with a large tear down his back on January 1st and was our very first rescue of the new year! We'll never truly know what caused his injury, but with time and delicate care, he'll recover completely.

Titans back is cleaned daily with a bandage change and fresh application of Aloe Vera. He's eating well with a special diet of canned meat with goats milk. Along with lots of TLC, he's doing very well.

We've been truly inspired by the support that has come our way and wanted you to know how grateful and humbled we are. A special thank you to Pedro Lopez who brought this story to social media and pleaded for help...it truly takes a village.

** Update - we've named this brave pup, Titan meaning "of great strength". Our veterinarian said that the open wound was in good condition and will need daily bandage changes with the application of fresh Aloe Vera. Baby steps, but well get there! Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement, we certainly feel your love.

Our first rescue of 2025!
We saw a post asking for emergency help and doing nothing was simply not an option. We reached out to the security guard who lead us to this baby. His skin was much worse than the photos and we were glad to rescue him immediately off the streets. He's only 3 weeks old and we will do all that we can to ensure that he heals safely. Vet visit today for next steps. If you're like to support his care, we are always grateful ❤️

Only way to go is UP!
First and foremost, Happy New Year to our amazing group of dedicated supporters, we have so much to be thankful for and even more to look forward to this year! As you may now know, the island was plunged into darkness yesterday with an island wide power and water outage leaving 90% of Puerto Rico in the dark. Power is slowly restoring, but no water for us just yet. Nevertheless, we are still beaming knowing that 6 rescues are waking up today with nothing but love and promise to look forward to after traveling stateside yesterday with the amazing partnership of The Sato Project!

Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made 2024 possible from opening your home to a Sato in need, sharing words of comfort, offering lifesaving financial support, sharing our mission, volunteering countless hours of your time to help transport, provide comfort and ultimately the perfect home for them all. It never escapes us that none of this is possible without you! Everyone plays a part in the ultimate outcome and we could not be more humbled and grateful as we enter our 25th year in rescue.

Small but mighty...
We have an update on our tiniest rescue, Starr. This loving and full of kisses puppy sadly has an infection. She's on antibiotics, but we're keeping a close eye on the wounds with her leg surgery pending. Our goal is to help her get strong and healthy first and foremost. We will keep you posted on her journey to recovery.

At only 1.7 pounds, this sweetheart was found in the middle of the road with her siblings by a local rescuer. She asked for help of any kind and although we are very full, we knew that with your help, we'd be able to provide all that she needs. She was born missing her rear paw and will need additional care and surgery to live a carefree life. We've started her health protocol and when she's old enough, the surgery to remove her back leg and give her the balance she needs to play freely.

We've affectionately named her STARR ~ meaning guiding light in your life, unique, prominent, and destined for greatness. We have no doubt that she'll live up to her name.

Found starving on the side of the road, she searched for food among the debris. Recently dumped and living amongst an established group of strays, she was afraid and submissive...she wouldn't last long. Slowly finding the courage to trust and be rescued, we were happy to welcome this sweet girl into our family. Finally, she knew she was safe. We each have a unique road to travel with a plan and purpose for us all. Even though we couldn't imagine adding more to our plate, we also couldn't look away when we saw the desperation in her eyes…the world had given up on her, but she clearly hadn't given up on the world. This sweet girl was found in a box on the side of a freeway in Puerto Rico. We can only suspect that she was dumped by a breeder. She suffers from Swimmers Syndrome that if treated early could have helped restore her mobility, but now her legs are calcified and the damage is done. X-rays showed that she is otherwise very healthy and such a wonderful puppy at only 4 months of age. We are fundraising to help with her medical needs and most urgently a wheelchair that can be adjusted as she grows. *see comments for what we have in mind.
