Ernesto has made his way to our doorsteps! With just hours to spare, we scrambled to gather the supplies that we need for our beyond capacity shelter. We are packed in with zero floor space to spare in an effort to keep everyone safe. Our rescues sits high in the mountains where winds, heavy rains and mudslides will battle us. We are holding our collective breath and asking for support to help us cover our last minute food & supplies run.

Our Good Boy Brutus!
Rescued a year ago this month, Brutus was clearly in an urgent rescue situation. A team of animal lovers jumped into action to ensure that they earned his trust to save his life.

This always happy boy has been living a life of love & safety, but now the time has come for him to find his forever family. Small Miracles ~
When a video surfaced of these four babies living among a pack of larger dogs, we knew that we had to act fast. They had been born and sleeping in the dirt and now showing obvious wounds covering their small bodies. Hurricane season is here, and weather is on the way, the time is now.

They received their first of many nutritious meals, medicated baths and some well-deserved rest knowing they were finally safe.

Friends, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when we can't catch our breath. We are beyond capacity, but we must keep going.

Once again, we humbly ask for your support to help our newest rescues with their rehabilitation. It's our hope that in several months of hands-on care that they will be ready to find their forever homes.

That's a lot of food and we have many more mouths to feed than ever before. This means that in 24 years, we've never been this packed or in more need! This past weekend, we wished Rainbow, Lenny & Kenny farewell and placed them in the trusted hands of our amazing Flight Angels for their second time around. Happy 4th of July!
As a gentle reminder, the traditions of the holiday can send animals fleeing into the darkness from fear. What is meant to be a day of celebration is sadly a day of panic for wildlife and our beloved animals. These three simple steps can save us all from heartbeak.

Dogs were heard barking in the brush when our volunteer, Jeannine pulled her car off to the side of the road. As she started to explore the area, she saw two shining eyes staring from inside an old tree branch. Rightfully fearful after being chased into the tree by streets dog, she saw this tiny kitten. He was safely rescued and within a few days, they were the best of friends. He's still a baby and for now our goal is to provide food, love & the safety he deserves.

Although we are a K9 rescue, we won't walk away from a feline in emergency need. It's been extremely challenging to find loving homes for our cats & kittens and we can all agree that a shelter life is not ideal. We are hopeful that if you know of anyone looking to adopt, please share our website to see all of our adoptable felines. With the help of Flight Angels willing to es**rt small animals in cabin, we can adopted almost anywhere in the US to the perfect match. Courage can be found in the smallest of us ~
Laying in front of a garbage can and unable to move, this beautiful girl needed urgent help after being hit by a car. Taken to the hospital on May 29th, she was treated for a dislocated femur, multiple fractures in her hip, tail and tibia. She underwent emergency surgery and has been slowly recovering in their care. Today she is being released and we are fundraising to help cover her $783 medical bill.

We celebrate every small step forward and are thrilled to see Sonia, Marble and Lucy make it safely off the island last week. They traveled by air and ground from Puerto Rico to Miami, driven to Chicago and then Minnesota. As if that wasn't enough, Lucy caught a second flight to Seattle! Thank you to everyone who supported us through their recovery and to our loving sato supporters, The Maramba Family, we simply can't change lives without you! This amazingly brave girl was found roaming in a neighborhood searching for help. Covered in mange and extremely weak, she was going from house to house when our volunteer Jeannine saw her. Seeing her injuries, will catch your breath...so much pain, heartbreaking to imagine how long she had been suffering as the deep cuts covered her body. Your mind races, was she trying to escape danger or was this an act of cruelty, we will never know, but she is now safe!

Our little girl underwent surgery this week to close her open wounds and after a four day hospital stay is recovering slowly. We promise to surround her with safety, nurse her wounds and shower her with kindness in hopes that she'll soon forget her start in life.

We humbly ask for your support if you are able to help us cover her hospital stay and follow up care, we'd be grateful. Our hospital balance is currently $371. Thank you in advance for your support.

Found starving on the side of the road, she searched for food among the debris. Recently dumped and living amongst an established group of strays, she was afraid and submissive...she wouldn't last long. Slowly finding the courage to trust and be rescued, we were happy to welcome this sweet girl into our family. Finally, she knew she was safe.

We work daily to catch our breath, but it's a grind worth our every effort. We are deeply grateful for any donation to help us meet her medical needs and to help her receive all that she needs.

She may not be a traditional mom, but to every rescue that crosses our gates, she is quite often the first true sign of love and compassion they've ever known. She nurses them back to health, mends their broken spirits and provides a safe place for them until forever families can be found. She sheds tears when they leave and beams with pride when she receives updates on their lives...that's what being a mom is all about! We each have a unique road to travel with a plan and purpose for us all. Even though we couldn't imagine adding more to our plate, we also couldn't look away when we saw the desperation in her eyes…the world had given up on her, but she clearly hadn't given up on the world.

This sweet girl was found in a box on the side of a freeway in Puerto Rico. We can only suspect that she was dumped by a breeder. She suffers from Swimmers Syndrome that if treated early could have helped restore her mobility, but now her legs are calcified and the damage is done. X-rays showed that she is otherwise very healthy and such a wonderful puppy at only 4 months of age.

We are fundraising to help with her medical needs and most urgently a wheelchair that can be adjusted as she grows. *see comments for what we have in mind. If you can help in any way, we are deeply grateful.

They looked on and did nothing. By throwing her away, her family failed her in every way.

We received an urgent call from a young girl who was on her way to the University when she spotted this abandoned 6 year old Shih Tzu in the middle of the highway. At only 11 pounds, she is covered in mammary tumors, papilloma in her ears and a congenital eye defect that blurs her vision. Her physical condition is heartbreaking, an extremely hard life lived..

We quickly wanted to give her a name that spoke to her heart and spirit. We are pleased to introduce you to Sugar! She deserves this chance at a second life, a better life and we are truly happy to ensure her days are filled with love from now on.

Our Smallest Warriors ~
We received an urgent call from the Veterans Hospital when these 5 tiny puppies were abandoned on their property. At only 4 weeks old, they were suffering severe neglect. The smallest of them was covered in ant bites with a large scar down her back...so young to have to endured such pain. They are all safe now at Sato City, eating on their own and drinking coconut water. They are embracing each moment of love and we're more than happy to provide a safe place for the to grow strong.

Friends, we can't say this enough, we are far beyond capacity and stretched to our limits. We are humbled by your continued support and can't thank you enough for believing in our mission.

Happiness is worth waiting for!
Purrting and Kitty were both found in similar situations where their lives were measured in minutes and not days. It's been a long year since their rescue, and we are elated to see them both get their chance at a forever homes. Purrrting traveled to Seattle where she's mastered the art of being adorable and playing with all of her new toys. While Kitty has found her person in Boston and has already discovered a safe place nestled into her home. Thank you to everyone who's donated along the away. Destiny ~
We weren't suppose to stop, time was critical as we traveled across the island to meet our scheduled flight for 5 lucky rescues headed stateside. Bonnie was waiting in her car and saw this small puppy out of the corner of her eye sitting dejected in the pouring rain. She could not look away and would never walk away.

We scooped her up and affectionately named her Maxine after the T. J. Maxx she was found in front of soaking wet. Bonnie went into the store and was able to buy a travel bag, fleece blanket and a toy so she would be comfortable on the road.

As you can see, it's puppy season and our headcount is growing fast!

I deserve love too.
Left alone in the mountains of Puerto Rico with only a tin of water and cooked rice to sustain me, I sat frozen in fear and made myself as small as I could when darkness came. Rain soaked the ground around me, what did I do wrong?

My rescue day came, and I screamed in fear when I heard footsteps approach me. I was so frightened, but she talked so softly, and I slowly began to trust. She gently scooped me into her arms and made me feel safe, it was over...my nightmare was over.

Beba is a cherished name at our rescue. It's been given many times to those who need it most, it means baby in Spanish and in our hearts, it means you'll never be alone. It's March and Madness is in full effect, but with a bit of a different twist for us at Second Chance. This week we were faced with back to back rescues at the same location. Scrambling to find space, we added these lucky 11 rescues to our already packed shelter.

It all started with our volunteer spotting one Chihuahua sitting alone on a mountain road. She came running when she saw food in our hands...she was starving! Driving back to the rescue, a rainbow appeared and the name just fit. Welcome to Sato City Rainbow!

We wish that was the end of our post, but we received word that at the same location, there were more Chihuahuas. We returned and quickly spotted a mom with her puppies running from the bushes to greet us. That's 10 more off the streets that won't suffer from starvation.

Friends, we are PACKED! We are truly grateful for any support towards our most basic need of food and vaccinations. We are also looking for loving homes for our fully vetted and sterilized adoptable rescues. It's hard to find the words...
Today was our day to prepare for the month, shopping for much needed supplies to keep us running; dog & puppy food, cleaning supplies and everything in between. With so many counting on us, we must keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Then the call came, the dogs knew something was different and they were bound to let us know. Our volunteers went down the mountain to investigate and sitting in the heat of the day, there they were, a laundry basket filled with four puppies. We have no words, just exhaustion, but we won't let them down and are blessed to have found them.

Once again, we humbly ask for your support towards their health protocol. We are happy that these four females will be sterilized in our care to help slow the animal population problem that plagues the island.

Just received—another mama and her newborn puppies. These were left at the SCAR gate with mama tied to the fence. At least they were brought to a safe place rather than left to die on the side of the road. But animal abandonment is at a crisis level in a Puerto Rico.
