The Good Stuff!
This is the moment when we know that the best is yet to come and her dreams will soon come true ~

Julie was rescued in 2023 from the middle of the mountains with nothing but open road in sight. She was starving, skinny, anemic and weighing only 8 pounds. She would have died of starvation or been hit by a car, it was just a matter of time. Instead, Bonnie trapped with care, this frightened girl and gingerly put her back together. She and her amazing team earned her trust and taught her that she will never be alone or abandoned again.

Today, she left the island and is escorted by our amazing and longtime Flight Angels, Patty and Dave as she heads to meet her forever family in Minnesota who are ready to welcome her with open arms, a bed & toys of her own. Dreams do come true ~

Thank you to everyone who supported her recovery along the way, we can't change these deserving lives without you and hope that this full circle moment brings a joy to your holiday.

In a moment...
It's a beautiful gift when your new family falls in love with nothing but a photo and a short description of how you found yourself homeless. It's that leap of faith when they immediately board a flight and instead of one, they adopt two! It's that moment when you know that your new family will spoil you to a point where you will never remember that there was a time when you weren't loved.

Welcoming Lia ~
This trusting sweetheart is 7 years old and the newest member of Second Chance Animal Rescue. Her owner passed away and with nowhere to go, we welcomed this beautiful girl into our family. She's in desperate need of dentistry, blood work and X-rays. If you are able to help us this holiday season to meet her medical needs, we are always grateful for the support. We look forward to getting her ready for adoption as soon as possible so that she can live out her days in the comforts of a forever home.

As the holiday season approaches, we are desperately seeking travelers from Puerto Rico to Minnesota, Chicago, Seattle, or New Hampshire to lend a hand. Success!
All 6 rescues made it safely off the island to Miami and then began their drive up the coast to our support teams in New Hampshire. They quickly learned that the world is much bigger than their dreams and we couldn't be happier. Each rescue overcame unbelievable odds to make it to this point and we are thrilled to fulfill this promise.

Thank you to everyone who supported our transportation and shared our plea for help. We did it together and can't wait to do it again. We have vowed to continue digging deep to be the hope in the lives of those who wait for their day to someday come ~

6 Days!
We are just six days away from changing the lives of these deserving rescues. You've watched their heartbreaking stories unfold and now it's time to give them a better life. This is the good part!

We are fundraising to meet our flight, ground transportation and van rental needs. Transportation is our most costly and critical expense as they must fly to Miami and drive up the coast to New Hampshire. Small steps forward!
We love celebrating our wins, especially when it is thanks to the heroic efforts of volunteers coming together. Last night we were able to join forces to see these two cuties fly comfortably off the island and join their siblings in New Hampshire. A huge thank you to our determined volunteer Jeannine for navigating unexpected traffic, to our amazing Flight Angels, Jill, Nicole & Erin for their heroic efforts to meet us curbside and sprint to their gate to catch their flight with minutes to spare. And finally, to the unwavering team at Sato Heart Rescue for finding foster space until their forever homes can be found.

Even though it's two small rescues off the island, it's a tremendous lift of spirits to see our work fulfilled and their second chance truly begin. Thank you to EVERYONE who contributed to their rehabilitation, we did this together!

Our head falls into our hands, will this ever end...the constant desperation, the never-ending pleas for help. We are a small animal rescue group who vowed to help as many as we can over 24 years ago, but there is no break, no pause, only the constant need to keep going.

These small 4 week old puppies were found this week in our trash. Just feet away from a heavily trafficked road. The lack of responsibility and care speaks volumes about the person that abandoned them. They placed their unwanted puppies in a box, tossed in a washcloth and walked away...just like that, their problem was gone and our journey to raise them began.

We battle weather. urgent medical care, gathering newspaper for crates, shopping and loading food, daily health protocols, feedings, vaccinations and vet visits all on a skeleton staff, but we will keep going, keep fighting and keep saving lives as long as we can. We promise to care, love, feed, rehabilitate and find loving homes, we are determined!

Our beautiful survivor ~

Along with her two puppies, she was discovered thrown away near a small lake and living inside a cardboard box for comfort. Even though she was skin on bones, she was friendly and extremely grateful.

We've named this brave mom, Cynthia for her beautifully light spirit and gentleness. Heartbreakingly, x-rays & ultrasound reveal a congenital defect to her heart and pericardial hernia most likely caused from a traumatic fall that sadly can't be repaired. We will shower her with enough love to fill her broken body and the safety that she clearly deserves. She will have a home with Second Chance for as long as we're lucky enough to have her.

Once again, we humbly ask for support to cover her medical expenses. We are only able to help brave moms like Cynthia and her pups because you believe in our work and that they all deserve a chance. Saying goodbye is never easy, but knowing the love that awaits them is worth every minute. This past week we said farewell to a few very special rescues who are now on their way to their next adventure in life.

Travel off the island is by far our greatest and most critical expense with cost quite often exceeding a passenger ticket. If you can help us meet this goal, we are deeply grateful.

Today we are fundraising for Good Boy's plane ticket and ground transportation. You may remember Good Boy ~ his rescue story broke many hearts, but his recovery was nothing short of inspiring. He had been attacked by a machete, rushed to our ER and delicately put back together. He never failed to thank us with affection and lots of purrs. His name fit him perfectly because he is by far the "Goodest Boy".

With the help of Are We There Yet? Pet Transport & Services, the amazing Maramba Family and the entire team of Forever Loved, Good Boy is one step closer to home.

In one unimaginable moment, we found this plastic tub of overheated puppies at our gates. They had tiny holes handmade in the top with 7 small souls trapped inside what can only be described as a steam box. Condensation dripped down the sides as their moments in the sun must have been terrifying.

Rescuers on the island are begging for help, we simply can't rescue our way out of what's happening. Sterilization is the only key to ending the suffering of the countless thousands that are not found as they wait inside a box for help to come.

We humbly ask for your support for canned puppy food and financial aid to give these 7 puppies what they need to recover and eventually the sterilization they will need to find their forever homes. This is a long process and we rely solely on the generosity of those who believe that our mission is important and that our rescues deserve a chance at life. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this beautiful journey from abandonment to hope full circle. Lass is now safely in the care of our amazing friends at Sato Heart Rescue in New Hampshire. The flight cost off the island for Lass and friends was $2,300 and we’re still fundraising to help cover this cost if you are able, we’re halfway there! It's finally here!
The most critical part of their journey and our promise to give them each a second chance. Saying goodbye is never easy, but this is the good stuff and seeing them have their chance at a better tomorrow is what it's all about!

Transportation is extremely difficult to secure and the expenses are staggering, but it is what it is and we must find a way. We can't stress enough how each dollar donated goes towards our ultimate goal of finding their future families. The expenses may be high, but the end result is priceless.

Days after Ernesto hit the island, we are still without power or running water, but recovering slowly. Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who shared our food fundraiser, donated and extended their prayers, we are deeply grateful. The storm was not easy, and blocked roads kept help from coming until late in the evening. Feeding, cleaning and rotating went until 2:30am. Everyone is so tired, but safe.

Thank you to Bonnie and Nelly for working through the night to take care of our overwhelming crew and to Jeannine for her amazing dedication to feeding the strays on the streets who count on her for their survival. You are all true heroes to us, and we hope each day is better than the last.
