We all love riding in the forestry, dunes and the beach area on the 2 hour rides out. 🐎

Recently, however, it has been a problem for the horses using the exit road where they have been slipping on the surface and risked injury. When horses have an injury like that the pain and damage could go
undetected and the consequences problematical.

Daniel and I approached INFRAQUINTA, the company that looks after the maintenance and quality of Quinta do Lago and the surrounding area, to see what could be done. Engº Rudolfo got onto it straight away and organised for new gravel to be put on the path. Now, you will be delighted to know, the surface is now safe for our precious horses.

Anyone for a Lisbon trip in September? 😍

On this special day EPAE will be honoured by the President of the Republic, Sr. Dr. Rebelo de Sousa, for their contribution to culture and tradition. This will be a show not to be missed.

We're very proud to celebrate this news from ABRS+ 🤩
Our Sue is Volunteer of the Year! This is no surprise to us at Pinetrees as she does amazing work helping children with Cerebral Palsy enjoy their rides with us weekly. It's a huge honor to have Sue help us at Pinetrees and a great honor to be recognized by ABRS 💚

The following text is from ABRS:
Our next nomination for ABRS+ Volunteer of the Year comes from one of our overseas members - Pinetrees Riding Centre in Portugal.

👏Sue has been nominated by the Proprietor of Pinetrees Riding Centre, an ABRS+ member in Portugal. She says of Sue: ‘Sue is a mature lady with grown up children. She is a hugely dedicated volunteer at Pinetrees, helping out on Monday and Friday mornings, so for a total of 8 hours each week, for the last few years. It is a great advantage to have a voluntary person with lots of life experience and wisdom, a benefit which, of course. we do not get with the youngsters. Sue helps give clients a warm welcome and is very aware of safety .

She helps prepare them with equipment, mount and do stirrups, and lead beginners. She also mucks out a stable or two and grooms and tacks up horses. 🐴One special task that she has taken on, which is a big help to me, is maintaining the contact listing of our voluntary helpers who do the Friday morning riding for the disabled session with Cerebral Palsy clients from the Faro school.’

Training at the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art 🐴 🇵🇹

It is a rare opportunity to find such a fulfilling training course for equestrian professionals. Last weekend I spent a full day on a most informative course at the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. An interesting collection of horse people had come from the north and south of Portugal, Brazil, and one lady even came especially for the weekend from Belgium.

The morning lectures were held in the beautiful National Palace of Queluz, with presentations by Sr. Bruno Caseirão on the historical development of Equitation through the centuries with references to the famous European schools, and equestrian authors of note. Three of the top riders of the national school gave informative lectures before we visited the palace library where there is a collection of ancient equestrian books and prints, including the 15thc book by Dom Duarte, king of Portugal and son of the English princess Phillipa of Lancaster who became queen of Portugal after marrying João I.

The afternoon was spent in the Henrique Calado indoor school in Belem, which is where the public can see the daily morning training shows and evening Galas.

The difference, however, was that we were IN the arena with the horses close up, and, in dialogue with the presenters! Would you get such an opportunity in any of the other schools of equestrian arte? Lead rider João Pedro Rodrigues, Francisco Bessa de Carvalho, João Quintas e Rui Almeida gave us so much of their knowledge that, at the end, I could not say there was one thing that stuck in my mind: I am still digesting it all!

Look up the Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre on the Parques de Sintra site for details of the next Workshops, which are, naturally, presented in Portuguese. If there is a demand it is possible that they could make an English version for an international audience on an agreed day.

Pinetrees riders help Almancil Rotarians project 💚

The proceeds from the Pinetrees Riding Easter show were destined to support the Almancil Rotary project to help the Community Centre, ASCA, to pay for an electric vehicle for delivery of the “Meals on Wheels” service to the elderly. A total of €500 was raised through entry fees and a raffle so that the payment for the vehicle is now complete. Congratulations to all that contributed.

The judge, Mrs. Beverly McHale, did a grand job in giving the riders wonderful support and encouragement with her marking of the equitation, fancy dress and jumping classes. Plenty of praise and good tips were giving to make the event a learning experience. She was ably assisted by scribes Karin Sweeney and Teddy Coles.

The sponsors SandyBlue were on hand to present lovely rosettes to all
made by Jinny Harman, goody bags and 4 prestigious trophies for the top scores. SandyBlue have come up tops again, and have also sponsored a jump made by Carpenter Alan Holmes and with advertising plaques made by Carlos Nogueira. All the jumps were spruced up by some excellent painting by Jerry Gibbons.

The weather was kind and allowed us to enjoy a delicious lunch al fresco catered by Gisel's team from Algarve Fine Food.

Pinetrees neighbours Dirt E bikers were on hand for those who preferred 2 wheels to four legs! Participants could try out their obstacle course which also contributed to the funds raised.

Many thanks to Elisa of Equiloulé who set up a table with lots of horsey goods to buy and Lurdes Nogueira from Epoxy lab with her art display – all lovely things. Rotarians Peter Hinze and Uschi Kuhn welcomed D. Dora, representative from the Almancil Parish Council, and D. Sandra from ASCA and presented a cheque for €500 from the event. Many thanks must go to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. ☺️💚
