sit, sit, SIT, SIIHIIIT, SIIIIT!
That's what I hear daily on my walks trough town. The gentleman in question has the sweetest dog, the dog has to sit at every street corner before he crosses the street. And that's the only time the dog doesn't listen. He doesn't want to sit. As a puppy he did, I'm sure about that, I saw him at a local puppy class. Since he has gotten bigger he doesn't want to sit.
His owner says he's just stubborn :/
The dog doesn't want to sit because it hurts, when he does eventually sit, he has to adjust his hind legs multiple times before he sits, and then he immediately falls on his but, when a second later he has to get up again to cross the street, he shoves his weight to the front so his hind legs don't have to do all the work of lifting his hind quarters.
So he isn't disobeying, it's just to painfull and to much trouble for him :(
The "Sit" is a very pressurised position for a dog to be in. It's the same for us in squatting position.
Sadly the sit is used a lot in dogtraining. With a healthy dog that's no problem, but nowadays there are a lot of unhealthy dogs around.
So what I'm trying to make clear, if your dog doesn't obey he doesn't have to be stubborn. The situation can be to difficult or he can have physical problems like the dog in my town.
Always be aware of your dogs movement and changes. Look at what he does and doesn't do. It will prevent a lot of frustration in owner and dog.
I approached the man and his dog with this story, but he was still convinced the dog is stubborn. I think the only one stubborn is he.
