Its interesting how photos can bring back so many memories.........

When we first started to renovate Quinta do Cobral, our abandoned farm, one of the critical things we needed was water and we didn’t have any! We now have a wonderful supply from a 65m borehole but before that we had to collect every drop we needed for drinking, cooking and washing from the fountain in the village. Fonte de São João became a daily visiting place, we turned up with 6 to 8 25L water containers and filled them up, for free, with the most wonderful tasting, fresh water. It was an absolute life line for us.
Now I have the pleasure of taking a few 3L bottles to fill with the same, crystal clear, sweet tasting water just because I love it, especially chilled on a hot day. Every time I fill up it makes me smile and remember our 22 year journey and why we absolutely love living here.

Quando começámos a renovar a Quinta do Cobral, a nossa quinta abandonada, uma das coisas mais importantes que precisávamos era de água e não a tínhamos! Atualmente, temos um excelente abastecimento através de um furo de 65 metros, mas antes disso tínhamos de recolher todas as gotas de água que precisávamos para beber, cozinhar e lavar na fonte da aldeia. A Fonte de São João tornou-se um local de visita diária, aparecíamos com 6 a 8 recipientes de água de 25L e enchíamo-los, de graça, com a água fresca de sabor maravilhoso. Foi uma verdadeira tábua de salvação para nós.
Agora tenho o prazer de levar algumas garrafas de 3L para encher com a mesma água, cristalina e de sabor doce, só porque a adoro, especialmente fresca num dia quente. Cada vez que a encho, faz-me sorrir e lembrar a nossa viagem de 22 anos e a razão pela qual adoramos viver aqui.

My Dads Silver Poplar tree seen every morning from my kitchen window ……..

Its vivid foliage brings me such joy especially at this time of year. It is most spectacular on a bright sunny day against a cloudless sky with a breeze blowing through its leaves. The tree seems to sparkle like it’s covered in glitter when the leaves dance and show their silver backs to perfection. See reel that follows this post.

In 2018 while visiting my Dad in France I managed to dig up 2 suckers from his magnificent tree which was over 30m high and bring them home. Lots of love and care let to both trees thriving. Now this one is a glittering reminder of him every day, one that I treasure.
While looking up the history of these trees for this post I discovered that in Ancient Greco-Roman mythology the Silver Poplar was a symbol of a peaceful afterlife and a memory of those we love who have died, and in the language of flowers, its meaning is “time”. How absolutely perfect is that?

O choupo do meu pai, visto todas as manhãs da janela da minha cozinha.........
A sua folhagem viva traz-me muita alegria, especialmente nesta altura do ano. É mais espetacular num dia de sol brilhante, contra um céu sem nuvens e com uma brisa a soprar nas suas folhas. A árvore parece brilhar como se estivesse coberta de purpurina quando as folhas dançam e mostram as suas costas prateadas na perfeição.
Em 2018, enquanto visitava o meu pai em França, consegui desenterrar 2 rebentos da sua magnífica árvore com mais de 30 metros de altura e trazê-los para casa. Muito amor e carinho fizeram com que ambas as árvores prosperassem. Agora, esta é uma recordação brilhante dele todos os dias, uma recordação que guardo com carinho.
Enquanto pesquisava a história destas árvores para este post, descobri que, na mitologia greco-romana antiga, o choupo-prateado era um símbolo de uma vida pacífica após a morte e uma memória daqueles que amamos e que, na linguagem das flores, o seu significado é “tempo”. Não é absolutamente perfeito?

Its Ylvas Birthday, 4 years old and still and cute as ever....

Actually, to be totally honest, we don't know her actual Birthday as she was rescued from Braga as a small puppy (around 8 weeks old we think). She was a street puppy and during a particularly fierce thunderstorm her parents ran off, as she was too small to keep up she was left soaking wet in the middle of the road. We were lucky enough to see a Facebook post asking for adoptees. She has now been living with us for 4 years and is loved by everyone especially the kids who come to stay at our Quinta. Super friendly and absolutely loves cuddles, she is a really lovely girl and we love having her at our farm. HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY YLVA - We all love you 🐕🎂🎉

É o aniversário da Ylvas, com 4 anos e ainda tão gira como sempre....

Na verdade, para sermos totalmente honestos, não sabemos qual é o seu verdadeiro aniversário, uma vez que foi resgatada de Braga quando era um cachorrinho pequeno (cerca de 8 semanas de idade, pensamos). Era uma cachorrinha de rua e, durante uma tempestade particularmente violenta, os pais fugiram e, como era demasiado pequena para a acompanhar, foi deixada encharcada no meio da estrada. Tivemos a sorte de ver uma publicação no Facebook a pedir adoptantes. Ela já vive connosco há 4 anos e é adorada por todos, especialmente pelas crianças que vêm ficar na nossa Quinta. Super simpática e adora mimos, é uma menina muito querida e adoramos tê-la na nossa quinta. FELIZ 4º BIRTHDAY YLVA - Todos te adoramos 🐕🎂🎉

Tumeric has been used successfully for years…..

We have been making our own Golden Paste with Tumeric and using it to help our wonderful old dog Blue. Last year he suffered a fit similar to a stroke, we rushed him to our local vet who put him on a drip as he was dehydrated and kept him in overnight, she did say that he probably would be unable to walk again. Blue, being Blue! was asleep when Richard went to pick him up, he promptly astonished us all by getting up and walking out of the cage. He is an incredible dog as all those of you who know him understand and we want to give him the best possible old age. He is still walking, skipping around at meal times and generally enjoying our visitors and life as usual, it's incredible and we put a lot of his pain free happiness down to Tumeric. This wonder spice is used to control inflammation and pain, itchy skin conditions and allergies, atopy, arthritis, infections, age degeneration and for various cancers❤️

A curcuma tem sido utilizada com sucesso há anos para ajudar em muitos problemas, tanto em animais como em humanos....

Temos estado a fazer a nossa própria Pasta Dourada com Tumeric e a utilizá-la para ajudar o nosso maravilhoso cão Blue. No ano passado, sofreu um ataque semelhante a um AVC. Levámo-lo de imediato ao nosso veterinário local, que o pôs a soro, pois estava desidratado, e o manteve internado durante a noite. Blue, sendo Blue! estava a dormir quando o Richard o foi buscar, mas surpreendeu-nos a todos ao levantar-se e sair da gaiola. É um cão incrível, como todos os que o conhecem sabem, e queremos dar-lhe a melhor velhice possível. Continua a andar, a saltitar à hora das refeições e, de um modo geral, a desfrutar das nossas visitas e da vida como sempre, é incrível e atribuímos grande parte da sua felicidade sem dores ao Tumeric. Esta especiaria milagrosa é utilizada para controlar a inflamação e a dor, as alergias e as comichões na pele, a atopia, a artrite, as infecções, a degeneração da idade e vários tipos de cancro❤️

Wonderful Birthday today, everything that is great about living in this amazing country……..
We drove up to the mountains past Loriga, checking out the beautiful swimming area on the way, then all the way up to the Restaurant Pedras Lavadres. Sadly we could not experience the incredible views from there, it was right up in the clouds but had a lovely “Prato da dia”, pork and chorizo bean stew with rice, a really creamy set custard for pudding with wine, coffee and all for €10 each. The drive back winding down the Almoso river was absolutely spectacular, steep terraces, spring flowers and waterfalls, stunning views with my 1970 Beetle in its element! It’s such a spectacular place to live and visit 🌲💚

Aniversário maravilhoso hoje, tudo o que há de bom em viver neste país incrível……..
Dirigimos até as montanhas passando por Loriga, verificando a bela área de natação no caminho, depois subimos até o Restaurante Pedras Lavadres. Infelizmente não pudemos experimentar as vistas incríveis de lá, estava bem nas nuvens, mas tinha um adorável “Prato da dia”, carne de porco e chouriço com arroz, um creme cremoso para pudim com vinho, café e tudo para 10€ cada. A viagem de volta pelo rio Almoso foi absolutamente espetacular, terraços íngremes, flores da primavera e cachoeiras, vistas deslumbrantes com meu Fusca de 1970 no elemento! É um lugar espetacular para se viver e visitar. 🌲💚

Friends and family are so important, connections, love and comfort….

My best friend Sao has 2 daughters one lives just a few houses up the road from her and the other one lives in Germany. Her 2 precious Grandaughters who live in Germany have been there for some time, her youngest really doesn’t speak much Portuguese so when Sao gets a voice message from little Louisa it doesn’t just light up her day it literally lights up her whole world!!!! Don’t forget Grandparents no matter how far away they are….. just look at Sao’s face and the love shining there ❤️

Amigos e família são tão importantes, conexões, amor e conforto….

Meu melhor amigo, Sao, tem 2 filhas, uma mora a apenas algumas casas dela e a outra mora na Alemanha. Suas 2 preciosas netas que moram na Alemanha já estão lá há algum tempo, sua caçula realmente não fala muito português, então quando Sao recebe uma mensagem de voz da pequena Louisa, isso não apenas ilumina seu dia, mas literalmente ilumina todo seu mundo !!!! Não se esqueça dos avós, não importa o quão longe eles estejam ... basta olhar para o rosto de Sao e o amor brilhando lá ❤️

One of the benefits of all the rain we have been having is seeing these beautiful creatures.....

The Fire Salamander (scientific name: Salamandra Salamandra) is a very common species here in Portugal, its a semi-aquatic amphibian which spends most of its life hidden on the ground amongst foliage and dead wood. After dusk, especially when its raining, these gentle, slow moving creatures come out, sometimes in large numbers. Its very easy to step on them as there are so many! They grow up to 25cm in length and live for a long time (its been recorded that they can live up to 50 years in captivity).

They pose no threat to humans or pets, however they do produce a toxin called samandarin, which can be dangerous but you would need to consume very large amounts for any real effect. Pets are safe as Fire Salamanders taste terrible apparently! Any cat or dog wanting to play would soon leave it alone. As you can see Foxy, one of our kittens, met one for the first time the other night, she was very curious, touched noses but left it well along after that. So take care when traveling out an about on a windy, wet night, you never know who you might meet! 🦎🖤💛🖤💛

A Salamandra do Fogo (nome científico: Salamandra Salamandra) é uma espécie muito comum aqui em Portugal.
Como podem ver, Foxy, um dos nossos gatinhos, encontrou um pela primeira vez na outra noite, estava muito curioso, tocou no nariz mas deixou-o bem depois disso. Portanto, tenha cuidado ao viajar numa noite de vento e chuva, nunca se sabe quem se pode encontrar! 🦎🖤💛🖤💛

I have organised 3 new natural soap making and body care courses for early 2023, all at Quinta do Cobral Studio in Lagares da Beira (accommodation may also be available).

Saturday 11th February 2023 -I will be teaching my ever popular Beginners Natural Soap Making course. Come along and make 1 kilo of beautiful natural, vegan soap.

Saturday 25th February 2023 - A wonderful course where you will learn how to make 8 gorgeous, natural body products that really work! Includes creams, solid shampoo and conditioner, deodorant and much more.

Saturday 1st April 2023 - The most versatile of my courses, we will be making natural, vegan liquid soap that can then be turned into multiple products for you, your family and the home, saving you €'s on your weekly shopping bill.

It’s that time of year when the crochet hooks come out!
I’ve made a couple of blankets and have lots of scraps to use up, so I thought a granny square cardigan would be a good idea- I ❤️. É aquela época do ano em que as agulhas de crochê saem!
Fiz alguns cobertores e tenho muitos restos para usar, então pensei que um cardigã quadrado seria uma boa ideia - eu ❤️it

Quão bom é a sensação? hoje eu esfreguei a parede recém-rebocada em nossa caldeira de biomassa e parecia ótimo. ❤️

We had rain, lovely rain yesterday!!…..

The first rain since early June, our river has been dry since the second week in July, 9 weeks, the most we have ever known (its been dry for 6 weeks before - 2017 the year of the dreadful fires here in our area). Its so fabulous! we cant tell you how happy it makes us feel 💦

Tivemos chuva, chuva adorável ontem!!.....

A primeira chuva desde o início de Junho, o nosso rio tem estado seco desde a segunda semana de Julho, 9 semanas, o máximo que alguma vez conhecemos (está seco há 6 semanas antes - 2017 o ano dos terríveis incêndios aqui na nossa área). É tão fabuloso! não podemos dizer-lhe como nos faz sentir felizes 💦 cottage

Just had such a lovely review from our last visitors, I had to share…….

This was a family in need of a break and a bit of relaxation and time together, I think we delivered… I love it when they comment on our green credentials too!

“Ishbel and Richard are amazing hosts! The house was super clean, equipped with everything we needed and more. They provided us with breakfast (milk, fruit, bread, delicious orange juice and amazing homemade jam) left in the house fridge for us! The pool is amazing and in a very cool space where you can relax while enjoying the good weather and family time! Apart from being super nice and sweet Ishbel and Richard are also very concerned about the environment and the water/energy consumption which I think is amazing! Really recommend it for an amazing family time! 💜”

We have just won the Design Guesthouse of the year for Central Portugal 2022! Recipients of this award have to be nominated by guests then a panel of industry experts analyse the nominations, review customer feedback and compare the facilities of all the nominated entries. The winners are those who can demonstrate their uniqueness, quality of services and facilities and exceptional levels of customer care across a number of categories. Over 22,000 nominations were received for this years programme and we won our category.
The judges were particularly complimentary of our green credentials and how we incorporate environmental options whenever we can as standard.
