Underdogs called on three exciting artists to present dissonant works, which challenge the patterns created by Western societies. What we think is the truth is actually one version of a multi-chapter story.

Now available: Pat Perry’s reflection on online marketplaces, Verkron’s tribute to the giant sable antelope and INTI’s provocation to the boundaries of Western religious imaginary.

UP NEXT AT : ’s all-new solo exhibition

Following his 2017 Underdogs debut, Felipe Pantone returns to the Gallery with “Perceptual Phenomena, Color Spaces, Structural Honesty”. A constellation of colours, patterns, textures, graphics and materialities, the exhibition draws upon the agile transformations of our reality, by way of our relationship with light.

The Argentinian-Spanish artist will also be making a public art intervention in the city of Lisbon, as well as a limited-edition release, with more details to be announced soon.

“Shirt Mask x Metis Throwie” is Nuno Viegas’ love letter to all graffiti writers. The hooded and masked figure stands for these fellow artists: they hide, only for their marks to be visible all over the city in the light of day.

Nuno Viegas, aka Metis, looks to graffiti for both its visual sense of attack and an undisturbed element of peace. His work has been prominently featured in the international urban art scene.

Underdogs is proud to release two editions by two unmistakable artists, later this month – stay tuned!

Vanessa Barragão upcycles raw materials from the textile industry. Marked by ancestral techniques and a poetic approach, the artist remains in search of bold, ambitious and ecologically engaged approaches.

Nuno Viegas, aka Metis, is one of Portugal’s core names in the international urban art scene. Graffiti is the focal point of his work, in a double aspect: a visually aggressive aesthetic is set against the artist’s peaceful, clean outlook on that reality.

Visual artist and designer from Singapore, Jacelyn Zhen, creates under her moniker Bbblob and is interested in the connections between form and color. She expresses the emotions and rhythms triggered by different interactions. If this artwork represents a relationship, which feelings would you name to describe it?

Resembling the impressive human capacity for adaptation – which can seem either a great virtue or a massive defect –, Kampus’ agile and astute amoebic figures fit into any corner. This edition turns his character into a container for pouring kindness. As the Portuguese artist says, it is “dusty and old, rarely used.” How often do you nurture your relationships with your kindness pot?

The impermanent nature of life is what makes it beautiful and painful. On the one hand, the idea of continuous becoming and, on the other, the awareness of how fragile life is. In her new work, Portuguese artist Pitanga uses her colorful palette to represent mixed feelings around the challenges of caring for yourself and others.

NEW PUBLIC ART!
📍Alcântara-Mar train station | Lisbon

Take a look at the new public art installation by internationally renowned visual artist

“This piece from 2019 was first presented at the artist’s solo exhibition “and now for something completely different: a show that features at least one female artist”. It was born from an internal uneasiness concerning the rise of the on-demand economy and a free-let-it-happen-let’s-privatize-everything market, its effects on people’s lives and how it seems to be (one of) the root(s) to so many contemporary problems, specifically the ongoing housing crisis in this case.”
– Wasted Rita

Integrating the Underdogs Public Art Programme, the message of the artwork is implicit in its statement:

– In a “ok, this is kinda handy”/“mmm… why are rents so high” relationship with neoliberalism –

An issue that continues to be highly pertinent today, as the housing crisis in Lisbon continues to soar.

If you are in town be sure to pass by and check it out! Location: Alcantâra-Mar train station (closest entrance to the river)

NEW EDITION! → Dropping 3 April 4pm GMT+1
SAVE THE DATE!

2024 marks the 50-year anniversary of the 25 of April Revolution, which put an end to dictatorship in Portugal. What better way to kick off this month than with ±MAISMENOS±, an artist with a body of work that is thought-provoking and cutting-edge, offering a sharp critical reflection on the model of political, social and economic organisation inherent to contemporary urban societies.

“Uma Impressão de Modalidade de Estado” (An Impression/Print of a Model of State), his upcoming limited edition with Underdogs10 , is a giclée print of his unique artwork from 2021 “Modalidade de Estado” (Model of State), which was originally on display in the window of Casa Buttuller, the famous Lisbon millinery shop founded in 1847.

Created from objects found and sold in an old military uniform factory – red cloth and a variety of military insignia brooches – it spells out the phrase “THE STATE TO WHICH THIS HAS COME”, a striking affirmation echoing the legacy of the Revolution, in contrast with the socio-political realities of our contemporary world.

Recently, the artist has reaffirmed this statement regarding his view of the current political situation in Portugal, culminating in the release of this edition.

This original edition is inspired by a series of 82 prints created by iconic Spanish artist Francisco Goya titled “The Disasters of War”: a visual protest against the violence of the Franco-Spanish Napoleonic wars. Titled “The Disasters of War”, it depicted the violent atrocities of armed conflict, capturing the viewer’s hesitant gaze.

In this new edition named “No Se Puede Mirar,” which means “Cannot Be Looked At” in Spanish, Fidél Évora reveals the portrait of a child from an archive of victims of N**i persecution. Looking directly at us, it challenges us to face what we are capable of, and what we are willing to bear.

These screen print editions have been hand-pulled by the artist, making EACH ONE UNIQUE.

Don’t miss the chance to add this new screen print edition by Portuguese artist David Oliveira to your collection! This artwork was inspired by a wire sculpture made by the artist in 2014, portraying two people in a heartfelt embrace. Hanging from the ceiling, this sculpture ebbed and flowed with the movement of the wind. Titled “Beijo” (kiss), this edition captures the essence of that sculpture, depicting the same embrace in a frozen moment.

Visual artist and photographer has a diverse heritage and background, stretching from Italy to Goa and back to Portugal. Developing work that interlaces photography with other media, she establishes foundational relationships between the old and the new. Approaching themes that range from the empowerment of women to explorations of socio-cultural and historical complexities, the artist superimposes photos from a variety of sources with techniques and patterns used in traditional women-driven crafts, including basketry and weaving: seamlessly integrating the apparent randomness of the objects/subjects she portrays and the aesthetics she creates.

is a Portuguese visual artist who works with painting, drawing, illustration, and graphic design. He began his journey in graffiti in 1998, cultivating a relationship with public spaces and a unique way of perceiving the city. In 2008 he began working as a graphic designer, engaging in various projects in both digital and print mediums. Since 2016 he has maintained his own studio in Almada, Portugal, where he pursues work in visual arts and communication design. He has participated in several urban art projects and directs training in mural painting workshops. Since 2001 he has been exhibiting his work, both individually and in group exhibitions.

’s work exists in a balance between nostalgic and contemporary themes, expressed through iconography and symbols related to hip-hop culture, old video games, or Art History, and connected through a patina of traditional painting. The representation of the human figure emerges in an interplay between melancholy and affirmation, interacting with the two-dimensionality of backgrounds created through graphic signs. His research work extends beyond the studio, encompassing large-scale mural projects that draw inspiration from academic art knowledge and street art influences.

was born in Uíge, a province in Angola, and moved to Portugal at the age of 8. He studied painting and architecture, and has a constantly evolving visual language. His work combines layers of colour with elements of realism. At first glance, his compositions evoke contradictory sensations in the observer, while remaining harmonious on the canvas. Happiness and melancholy, people, freedom, and symbolism are recurring and pivotal components in his works.

is a Portuguese visual artist and illustrator who has always been deeply interested in art that is “inserted” into the world. Fascinated with street aesthetics and urban contexts, she prefers to ignore conventional spaces such as galleries or museums and present her work in the street or in public spaces. Her work often embodies a visceral and erotic panorama of the contemporary body – affected by the expansion of its limits. Presenting a visual language inspired by an urban aesthetic, she uses media with multifaceted characteristics – drawing, painting, ceramics or tattooing.

is a Portuguese artist of Cape-Verdean descent, with professional training in Graphic Design whose practice has been chiefly exploring painting, drawing, and sculptural forms in wood. At once figurative and abstract, his visual language reveals a passion for exploring colours and shapes, patterns and elements. Imbued with a significant, yet subtle, symbolic charge, these draw inspiration from referents from traditional and indigenous cultures, from ancient civilisations, from vernacular architecture or from the arts and traditions of Africa, where he has his roots.

is a Portuguese artist with a multidisciplinary artistic career working with mural art, music, illustration, scenography, and painting. Having delved into the world of graffiti and urban art in the 1990s, he began to gain a following and recognition in this universe, especially due to the unique aesthetic of his three-dimensional letters and the use of light as a dominant component in his work. Having further explored drawing and developed new techniques, his pieces approach a series of different themes and subjects, with compositions that often incorporate elements from the natural world and a tendency to paint what he sees on an everyday basis: to capture the quotidian.
