Dog Registration in Portugal – What You Need to Know

In Portugal, it is mandatory for all dogs to be:
✅ Microchipped – placed by a vet, linked to your details.
✅ Registered in SIAC (national pet database).
✅ Registered at your local Junta de Freguesia.

Not registering your dog can lead to fines, but more importantly, it can put your dog at risk.

If your dog gets lost, a microchip is the fastest way to bring them home. Registration proves ownership in case of disputes. Helps control abandonment and ensures every dog has an identity.

At Naturavet (Lagos, Algarve), we can check if your dog’s microchip and registration are up to date and guide you through the process.

Protect your best friend. Make sure your dog is legally registered and safe.

Many pet owners think of sterilisation only as a way to avoid unwanted litters or reduce certain behaviours (like territory marking or escaping). But the truth is, it goes much further:

✅ Health – in females, it drastically reduces the risk of mammary tumours and eliminates the chance of severe uterine infections (pyometra). In males, it helps prevent prostate problems and certain tumours.

✅ Ethics – in Portugal (and worldwide) there are still thousands of abandoned dogs and cats. Sterilising your pet is also an act of social responsibility, helping to reduce the suffering caused by overpopulation.

✅ Wellbeing – a sterilised animal lives with less stress linked to reproductive instinct and tends to have a calmer, longer life.

At Naturavet we believe sterilisation is about care, not only for your pet, but also for the community.

📅 Book your dog or cat’s appointment today and let’s talk about the best time for sterilisation.

What do you know about “Esgana Canina” (Canine Distemper)?

Canine Distemper can cause fever, cough, nasal discharge, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, and in later stages even tremors or seizures. Many of these signs can easily be mistaken for something else, which is why prevention is always safer than treatment.

The disease is considered uncommon in countries with high vaccination rates. Portugal is believed to be one of them, but outbreaks still happen, especially in unvaccinated dogs.

👉 You can check if your dog is vaccinated against distemper in the “Boletim Sanitário de Cães e Gatos” (Pet Health Booklet). If you’re not sure, bring it along next time you visit us and we’ll help you check.

A quick look at the booklet can save your dog from a very painful disease.

It can be very worrying when a beloved pet suddenly starts losing control of their bladder. Many owners fear it may be a sign that the end of their friend’s life is near. 💔

But the truth is, incontinence isn’t always linked to ageing or something irreversible.
In many cases, the cause can be much simpler and treatable.

Common reasons include:

- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

- Struvite crystals (a frequent condition in dogs)

- Other manageable issues that can be identified with proper testing

At Naturavet, we can perform a urine test to find out exactly what’s happening. Once we know the cause, we can choose the right treatment to help your dog feel better again.

So if you’ve noticed sudden incontinence, don’t lose hope. The best step is to have your pet checked. It might be something we can fix. ❤️

In Portugal, indoor pet access is often restricted due to health regulations, but outdoor terraces or sidewalk seating are usually pet-friendly.

When arriving at a café or restaurant, it's courteous to ask staff first if it's OK to have your dog with you and you should ensure your dog stays leashed and behaves well.

Dogs are not allowed on the beach during bathing season, unless it’s a designated dog-friendly beach. Praia do Porto de Mós in Lagos, has a dog-friendly section.

On non-concessioned beaches, meaning there are no lifeguards or other facilities, dogs are usually allowed, as long as they are leashed and under control. Owners must pick up after them.

Walking a dog on a restricted bathing beach in summer can result in a fine (between €50–250).

It’s heartbreaking, but we’ve seen more and more cases where scammers pretend they’ve found someone’s missing dog.
They contact the owner, say the dog is at a vet clinic, and claim it needs urgent surgery. Then they ask for hundreds of euros to “save” the animal.

💔 In reality, the dog was never found and the money is gone.

We don’t want this to happen to you. If you ever receive a message like this:

✅ Stay calm.
✅ Call us directly (or your local vet) to confirm whether your dog is really with us.
✅ Do not send money to unknown accounts.

If your pet is genuinely in our care, we will always speak to you directly and clearly explain the situation. Please share this post to help protect other families from this cruel scam.
Let’s look out for each other and for our animals. 🐾

Even when they seem perfectly fine, regular vet visits are one of the best ways to keep your pet healthy for the long run. A simple check-up can help us catch small issues before they become big problems.

During a general consultation, we take a good look at everything. From teeth and heart to weight, joints, and overall well being.
It’s especially important for older pets or those who’ve had health concerns in the past, but honestly… all pets benefit from a little extra care.

So if it’s been a while, this is your sign:

📞Give us a call and book a check-up with our friendly team today.
Let’s make sure your furry friend stays happy and healthy.

The Algarve sun is no joke this time of the year and some of our furry friends feel it even more than we do.

The heat can be really dangerous for your pet. So here’s your friendly reminder:
- Never leave pets in the car
- Make sure they always have access to fresh, cool water
- Walk them early in the morning or later in the evening
- Touch the pavement with your hand before walking. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them
- Create cool resting areas at home. Use fans, tiled floors, or a damp towel can help a lot

Recognising the signs of heatstroke could save your pet’s life.
Please share this post to help other families protect their animals.

Warning signs include:
• Heavy panting
• Excessive drooling
• Weakness or trembling
• Bright red or bluish gums
• Vomiting and/or diarrhoea

What do YOU do to keep your pets cool and safe in this heat?
Share your tips in the comments. Your idea might help another pet stay safe today!
